Welcome to the second installment of 2001 Back to the Future Roundtable: Part II! As always, I am your host, Johnny B Good Stamos and today we are joined by Jeff, Ashes, Sargo and Greeme. Part II focuses on the second half of the season, Frenzy and of course, a look at the upcoming playoffs. Will part III be a sit down with the Conference Finals GMs? I don't know but I certainly do like the Part I, II and III structure we are sort of running into here... Anyway! BBS is a big part of our pasts and thanks to big Spence, now our futures! LETS GET TO IT!
1. BBS has made its comeback and its once again the highest rated league in the land. I’m interested to know… in the last 10 years have you done any other leagues? And how does BBS compare. If this is your first time in BBS, so far, how do you think BBS compares against other leagues you have been a part of?
Ashes: I did UOSL and BBSBL, well I kind of ran those, so they were good! I loved running both leagues, but unfortunately the Navy is a bitch sometimes, but gone are the days of long deployments and extended periods of absences so I'll probably run another league at some point. UOSL was always fun because it had a slightly different cast of GMs with a mix of familiar faces. I miss it. BBSBL was my first OOTP league and it was active and lot of fun for awhile. I don't know if I have it in me to do OOTP anymore, but who knows? BBS has always been the same to me, which is great! The activity is always the highest in BBS and I get along with everyone. Good group of guys. In a sense, we've all kind of grown up with each other weirdly, so it's fun to see where everyone is at in their lives and get back to a good old fashion FBB league for old times' sake. Spencer is the man and he runs BBS to perfection, so it's definitely great to have it back.
Sargo:I've been in leagues, yes. Started back in 2004 and have been in leagues ever since with the exception of a few hiatuses, mostly when I was in college. NBN came back in December of 2019 and I've been in a few league's since then. BBS is easily my favorite league right now due to the activity.
Greeme: BBS is my favorite league by far. I like the draft notes. I like the fact that inflation is not predominant. I like the fact that most of the gms know what they are doing and the others seem to be learning. Nothing more frustrating in these leagues where the same gm constantly makes bad/friend trades and messes up the balance of power. But my favorite thing about BBS is Spencer. Dumb trade? Veto fire. See ya.
Erbes: Oh man where to begin. It all started sophomore year of college at THE George Washington University. The year was 2009, if I recall. Possibly 2008. Not sure. Anyways, not important. What is important is that the GW head of housing graced me with the opportunity to room with THE Mark Kelley. What a time to be alive! After a warming up period, a bit of nesting, and fighting about pans, Mark offered me a spot in BBSBL as the Cincinnati Reds. Truly blessed. It was all downhill from there. Joined BBS shortly thereafter. I think I was 3, 4, and 5? No idea at this point. As many know, I ran the most successful version of BBSBL in history, but also ran the least successful version of BBSBL history. A mixed bag! I've also been in SLOR, HFTC, LBB, VAV, GABL and so on and so on. All of my time in those leagues usually ended with me being kicked out for being a troll. Those were the days. The golden age!
2. Right now, who would you say at the top 3 players in BBS and why? Who would come in at a close 4th and 5th and why do they not beat out the top 3? GO!
Ashes: I'd say the top 3 players are Duncan, Nash, and Jordan, in that order. Duncan is just a monster and will win titles no matter what. The Clippers are pretty vulnerable if Duncan has a bad game, but those are few and far between. They probably only have issues in playoffs due to match-ups and wing dominance, so that may be their downfall. Nash is a god PG, his scoring is insane and he's been real nice since getting +8 to his Handling. Jordan is the best SG in the league right now with his complete game on the offensive and defensive side, but obviously his time is running out. 4 and 5 would be tough, I would probably go with Mourning at 4 since bigs are so rare and Mourning is probably the next best big because Shaq's FTs hold him back a lot, and for 5 I'd say it's a toss up between Shaq (big man baby) and Kobe.
Sargo:Top 3 players? Hmmm.. Tim Duncan is the easy #1. I'll say Kobe Bryant #2 and Shaq #3 at this point. Nash could be top 5, but with how other PGs will progress, he won't stay in the top 5 long. Allan Houston is pretty damn legit as well. B A+ scoring is nothing to scoff at.
Greeme: 1- Duncan
2- MJ
3- nash
4- dirk
5- shaq
Dirk is a tweener. Can't play enough d or rebound enough to start at pf so he should play at sf where his rebounding is a plus but he would be worth more as a big. Shaq's ft % is horrible and his tos aren't great.
Erbes:Yeah I mean it's who is the top 3 in talent or top 3 in value? Talent-wise I would say it's Duncan, Kobe, and Nash. Value-wise I would say it's Duncan, Kobe, and Nash. So yeah not much difference at this point! I think that changes with this upcoming draft. People will inevitable overvalue Yao due to his size. Don't get me wrong a 7'3 center is better than 6'9, but let's see him sim first guys! I'd fill out the top 5 with Mourning and Jordan. Jordan obviously doesn't have the value of the other 4 in this discussion, but he's still so good.
3. We had a BUNCH of trades that just took place at the frenzy and there were some HUGE ones that took my breath away. Of all of the trades that took place, which would you say shocked you the most? Ray to Dallas, Kobe to ORL or (close to the Frenzy) Vince to IND?
Ashes: I can't really pick my trade here, because it can't shock me! I did it! Though it's probably the right answer because who trades Kobe lol. I'd say the Vince Carter was shocking to me just because of how little value the Timberwolves got back. They basically traded Vince for the chance at getting LeBron. Not a lot of substance, just a lot of prayers and hopes. Good luck jeb!
Sargo:For me, it's Vince Carter to Indy, but I'm biased. When I acquired the Wolves pick for Sprewell, I was hoping it would eventually lead to me acquiring Carter. I didn't think it'd be that soon though. The Kobe Bryant to ORL deal was interesting too. I'm not sure either team won that deal.
Greeme: Biggest trade of the frenzy
Cavs Trade:
Scott Burrell
Tierre Brown
Nets Trade:
Matt Harpring
Scott burrell
I never thought that kobe would move. Shocked that ashes moved him.
Erbes:Kobe to Orlando was a head scratcher for me. I get it from Ashes' perspective, I guess. Wasn't going to win with just Nash this year. But what about next year!? However, I do think he'll be much better at utilizing JJ and Antoine than Break and Footy. He'll be able to put a better supporting cast around those two. And really I think he's getting very similar production, if not better production, with these two in the lineup. From the Magic's perspective I just don't get it. It's great value for a superstar, but I think it makes much more difficult to make CY. I don't have faith in that duo being able to pull it off. All of the other deals were pretty good, though!
4. A lot of you made some big time trades and have reshaped the culture of yours teams… whether it was moving Kobe, getting Vince or getting Howard, what was your reasoning behind those trades and why make them now? For Greeme, any moves you wish you could have done as you make your push towards the finals? Do you feel you have what it takes?
Ashes: So I didn't trade Kobe because he was injured, I could have brought him back for the playoffs. Seeing all the moves in the league and how my team was doing just made me realize that Kobe/Nash wasn't going to be enough. I think I knew that all along but I hate trading guys like Kobe or Nash. My only hopes in the playoffs was godlike performances from both guys in 7 game series, which of course is possible, but when you have people like Duncan, Shaq, Jordan, Mourning, Dirk, etc that can also take over games and many of which play against my weaker positions, it makes it tough to rely on winning via dominant scoring wings. I haven't fully answered those issues so I don't expect to win it all right now, but I think my team is a lot more complete right now or, at the very least, has a lot more options to work with. Obviously the pipe dream of landing Yao with the ORL pick is fun, but I'm not counting on it. Either way I've still got a really young core, a superstar, and some solid picks coming up in the draft. I have no worries of CY any time soon, and I can continue building a contender the next few years.
Sargo:While I was tanking, and am currently tanking, I could not pass on the opportunity to land a 24 year old super star in Vince Carter. I needed to cash in on assets and get a big time player. The timing wasn't perfect, but we are happy with the deal.
Greeme:I think we are the best team. Ward keeps getting injured so our dc keeps getting messed up. I would love to more my 04 or your or both for an upgrade but I'm not going to kill myself to do that. I could use a better backup big or wing but it really would just improve our chances by a few % points. What would probably be more useful would be to write some articles for acs.
Erbes:Yeah I traded NVE for Snow and then picked up Juwan Howard. Got panned for NVE deal. Probably rightfully so, but my defense took a big hit without Snow in the lineup. We're giving up close to 3 less ppg with him in the lineup. I didn't really need the scoring from NVE. Possible more proof in the pudding is that Detroit has collapsed without Snow? So yeah I'm okay with the apparent value loss. The Howard deal was good! Good depth pickup. Tried to start him, but boy is he not a starter. Oh yeah I guess I also made the McDyess for Rose trade... Worked out for both teams it looks like! We were hovering around .500 before we made the deal. Have really taken off since. I think people need to be okay losing value if it means it gives your team a better chance to win in a system.
5. Are you happy with the way your team is currently set up? What are the plans as we head into the second offseason in BBS.
Ashes: Very happy. I've toyed with idea of dealing Nash, and that may happen in the offseason, but right now it's nice to have a young core of Okur, Walker, and Johnson with Nash the god still in his young prime. Offseason plans I'm really hoping to complete my team with the draft, whether that be getting Yao or Boozer, or maybe a different guy to develop/trade for an upgrade. I'll probably explore options with Nash in the offseason, not sure on it yet. I'm hoping Okur has a good TC and is able to stay on the court longer next year. A good TC from Joe Johnson might put him in the higher level of scoring SGs, and Walker is already such a complete player, any boost in TC will be welcome. After the draft and potential trades, hoping to snag a few good rotation guys in FA and then wait for that juicy, juicy TC. Going to be fun!
Sargo:I am. We are in much better shape. We have 3 20+ PPG wings who are all under 24. Hunter looks interesting if he can fix his rebounding. El-Amin could be a sleeper PG in this league once he gets his camps due to his low TOs.
Greeme:I will probably try to win one more year or maybe trade you my guys for gil and my 03. Lots of gms don't realize that the guys that start the league old last longer so it wouldn't shock me to see mj play until 40+.
Erbes:Very happy. Dominant defense, racking up boards, and have a deep bench. Won't make too many moves this offseason as I want to see a full year with Rat as super sub. I'm hoping Bowen offers to resign because I think he has some real value playing defense on the wing in the current landscape of the league. Really just nervous for the offseason in 2 years. Really hope some of my guys offer to resign. PLEASE BIG Z AND GRANT STAY!!!!
6. The playoffs are approaching and if they were to start today you would have these match ups on the east: Nets vs Pistons / Cavs vs Hornets / Heat vs Bulls / Knicks vs Celtics. Who do you think is the most likely to pull off the 1st round upset!?
Ashes: I guess Celtics over Knicks would be the upset pick out of these. I see no chance in the Nets losing, but galo has done it before so let's give it a 2% chance. Heat are too good and too complete to lose to the Bulls, and Hornets might not even stay in the playoffs, though the Cavs are probably vulnerable to an upset. Celtics are possibly the better team in the NY match-up, but Crawford could very well have his way and keep the Knicks winning games, especially since the Sheed presence isn't really needed in the match-up, and it's not like he's going to tear it up scoring. I hope Crawford does well in the playoffs.
Sargo:Oof - I don't see any teams upsetting. Maybe the Celtics since they have the best player in that matchup, in Allen Iverson. Maybe the Bulls, if they could find their groove from last season. But I highly doubt it.
Greeme:Nets aren't losing. Doubt the cavs or knicks will. Mostly by default I'll go with kobe to get upset. Bulls on fire since getting dale davis and play/insance could easily find a dc to beat kobe.
Erbes:I feel like the East is a real crap shoot. Maybe not in the 1st round, but man there are like 3-4 teams who could pull it off. I could see the Bulls upsetting the Heat in the 1st round though. 2 brains are better than 1, right? Or in Kobe's case, 1/2 a brain? Kidding!!! I think Kobe has talked enough shit this season to where the karma gods are not happy and the Bulls pull it off in 6.
7. Looking at the west now, same question. Who is most likely to pull of the upset of these possible matchups? Clippers vs Spurs / Nuggets vs Mavs / Jazz vs Warriors / Kings vs Grizz?!
Ashes: Warriors over Jazz has a good chance of happening I think, because Dirk is amazing. There'll be a lot of high scoring games with Dirk and Houston going off each game. The Billups/Jackson match-up is pretty fun as well. Jazz just seem like the team most likely to get knocked off because I think their best match-up in the playoffs is probably the Clippers. Though since I don't have Kobe anymore, Houston would probably have a field day against me, but there's no way erbes beats me so if he answers that he is a punk liar! I don't think I'll end up at the 4th seed though, I'll probably drop to the 5th seed and upset erbes or 6th seed and lose a close one to the Jazz. Nuggets/Mavs is really interesting, but the Nuggets are a lot better now with Rose, and Shaq is Shaq. Clippers/Spurs seems like Duncan city, so I don't think it happens.
Sargo:I would not be shocked if the Mavericks or Grizz won. Both teams made deals to improve their rosters at the deadline and look better on paper. We'll see. Plus, the Kings lost Kobe Bryant.
Greeme: gonna go with griz just bc they play the kings.
Erbes: Grizz over Kings, easily. Ashes put it perfectly today: I can't stop his back court and he can't stop my front court. I think Bowen does enough up top to where we can eek out a series win in 7. But also think Warriors upset Jazz and Mavs have a chance to upset Nuggets. Lots of upsets! Jazz have been fading since like day 10. It's tough to watch. Warriors and Mavs both made really good moves at the deadline to improve. Seems like there are no real sure things in the playoffs other than the Clippers.
8. Lets go ahead and go BACK to the Future …. Who will represent the east and west in the finals?! How many games will it go ?! Who wins it!? And Who will be FINALS MVP!?
Ashes: I think it'll be Nets vs. Clippers. Clippers are vulnerable in the West, but I think the match-ups will play out pretty well for them. Nets/Heat Conference Finals will be fun to see, but I think Jordan really shines in that match-up and will be too much for the Heat in the end. As for the finals, greeme is one of the few GMs that has the tools to get Duncan out of his rhythm, and Clippers have no chance at stopping Jordan. Nets win the championship and Jordan takes home the Finals MVP before retiring.
Sargo:I'll say the Clippers - Nets. Easy choice, which means this will not happen. Let's say it'll go 7 games and the Clippers win with Timmy Duncan obviously winning the Finals MVP. He's just clearly the best player in this league and it'll be tough to beat.
Greeme:Nets. Clips. Nets in 6. MJ taking home the hardware
Erbes:I'll go Nuggets vs. Cavaliers. I think Nuggets avoid the upset in 1st round and ride Shaq/Rose to the promise land. Shaq can dominate Duncan, I'm positive. Without Duncan the Clippers are toast. The Nets get bounced by Cavs in the ECF. Not sure they have an answer for KVH if the Cavs move him around a little. I'll say Nuggets over Cavaliers in 6. You're welcome for Rose!
9. BONUS: Lets say you have a daughter, if you had to pick a GM to take her to prom, who would it be and why? It’s a family show so lets keep it classy…
Ashes: No one! None of these degenerates are good enough for my princess! Nah, I'll take the question seriously, hmmm, probably play. He's a big softie at heart but quick to jump to someone's defense and fight with all he has! Like a majestic ass golden retriever.
Sargo:This question ahhh. Uh, not The Waterboy cause he eats ass. I'd pick Antonius Block. He seems like a good guy, with good morals. I'd sign off on this.
Greeme:Game. He seems like the most harmless gm.
Erbes:I truly hate this question and I don't even have a daughter. However, I'll go with Donny Basone for selfish reasons. He works for YES so maybe he can get me Yankees tickets in exchange for taking my daughter's v-card. Seems like a fair trade?
10. BONUS part II: you have to fill out a table a ESPN Zone, which 4 GMS do you bring with you and why!
Ashes: Hmm, I think an interesting group would be erbes, greeme, habes, and kobe. Good personality with erbes to keep things light. Excellent wit and humor from habes to keep things fresh. Kobe to bring the hard, nonsense takes with no real support yet adamant stances to keep people talking. Greeme because he is a weirdo and will say some off the wall shit to pause the discussion and provide a good chance to change topics.
Sargo:Ahsan for sure. He's my dude. John is cool, Jr definitely. Last spot might have to go to Kobe. I'm a big banter guy and feel like he'd bring that level of banter and shit talking needed to have a good time.
Greeme:Unlike most leagues I'm in I actually like most of the gms here. I guess habes so we could play jewish geography, ashes so I could figure out what he actually does, kobe to see if he is as annoying in real life as he is online and nanz so he could keep the conversation going
Erbes:Thankfully I don't have to imagine this as this happened to me in real life! Such a lucky guy. If I could go back and live that day over and over again I certainly would. But if I had to choose a backup plan I'd pick Play, Insane, Ashes, and Steve2. Feel like we would just get drunk, play games, and argue about Game of Thrones. Would be a thrilling night. But then I'd also want Spence to be there because I think we'd need a chaperone. And I love him.
Thank you all for participating in the first Back to The Future Roundtable and I hope you all enjoy it! This is your host, Johnny B. Good Stamos reminding you that it takes 50 muscles to frown but only 13 to smile! Stay Sexy.
