1- Seems like Ahsan and JR have been MIA for all this season. How would you handle the situation if you were Spencer? Would you continue waiting on them or start finding replacements?
DeeperThanSims - Ahsan just got married and appears to be on an extended honeymoon so I understand Spencer not rushing to let him go. At this point I think it’s fair to ask Ahsan if he will have time for the league again soon. If not, maybe he can step down and come back a different time. JR has already posted about losing interest and time for the league months ago. His activity was waning before he got sick. I'm glad he's better now but it's strange he's communicating with guys in the league yet can't be bothered to sign on and post a DC. Spencer should probably ask him to go on the waitlist at this point. I have no clue who is even available to replace these guys though.
chipper - I would wait, honestly. They've contributed a lot to the league and they're going through some very important personal issues in their life. We all go through those from time to time. Patience is necessary.
Stevie B - Ahsan is fine. He got married, went on a honeymoon, and is getting acclimated with his new life. The Jr thing is different. Just post a DC (Ed's note: Jr posted a DC yesterday). It takes maybe a couple of minutes at most. That’s all I’ll say before Spence throws another conniption my way.
Von - Not sure what the situation is with the both of them; I don't think it is a one size fit all type situation. Ahsan is on his never ending honeymoon, I expect him to be back at some point. Joe has other stuff going on, not sure where his head is at regarding the league. Everything aside, if for whatever reason you can' t provide the minimal Jah effort.....you should probably have your spot relinquished at some point. With that said, not sure what our waitlist looks like.
2- The Nets sit 7 games under .500 currently as of Day 70. They have to go 22-13 to hit 42. Do they have a shot? What moves would you do to get them to reset?
DBW - I think Break can make it. He just had a promising 4-2 sim with a great win over the Clippers. I don’t think any of the fringe East teams aside from the Wizards are truly better than the Nets. The next sim will be very telling as the Nets have a lot of road games. I think Break should relax on trades and ride it out. I hope he makes it.
chipper- like break a lot, but I don't think he can do it. There are just too many teams in front of him and/or too many games against good teams. I did a *rough* calculation of his remaining schedule, and it comes out to about an 585 winning percentage of teams he has to face. Unless he had lucked into Mikan- I don't see a way out of this for him. No one move or multiple move is going to save him- unless he can convince someone to gift him something.
Steve- No, they don’t have a chance so there is no point in even thinking there are viable moves to get them to 42. It’s just a shame when he does ask for advice, and GMs fuck him over.
Pig- Meh, I don't think so. I think they have a chance getting past Milwaukee and Detroit but I am not sure they can pass Toronto. I think their only moves to get better is to add on more shit contracts.
3- George Mikan was awarded to the Orlando Magic at the mid-season mark. Since he’s on a rookie minimum with no birds, what’s his trade value with his pending free agency? What would you deal for him?
DBW - Mikan looks extremely good after 1 sim. Super efficient from the field and FT, basically no turnovers. If I had a team that was 1 big man away from title contention, I’d send a future first. That’s probably it though. Can't expect anything crazy for an expiring guy with no birds. Hawks will be signing him in free agency by the way.
chipper- Mikan's trade value is probably non-existent, since he's on the Magic and there's no reason for them to trade him. Sure- they could get a pick or two from a team like, say, the Nets, or even the Pistons, but why do that when you're chasing a championship?
Steve - A future 1st for a team that is in serious contention seems fair. He’s essentially a rental unless you have cap space otherwise. Either way it’s a moot point as Galo will be keeping him, and certainly going to have the best front court entering the postseason.
Pig- I personally would of offered a couple picks for Mikan if he went to a different team. Hard to judge value of a player without watching them sim. If I think he is the missing piece though for this year I would go all out for him as long as my future risk is somehow hedged.
4- Jalen Suggs still has 6 years and $185M left on his contract. Do you think any team can take him on or does he stay in Utah? Or does he have to be included in a package deal?
DBW - Suggs is still a dog. He won player of month 1, was an all-star and is an MVP candidate. That contract is insane, particularly years 4 through 6, but I think he's tradable right now. I got desperate and traded for Kuminga on the same contract so I won’t rule anything out. That was during my stretch of idiotic trades though.
Side note… if Break misses his CY, I can't see a new GM being too excited to take on the Kuminga deal. Adding a few extra CY years doesn't make up for 1 player taking up almost all of the soft cap. I know people won't agree, but I won't be mad if we shave off the last 2 years of that deal. I'd let Habes do the same to Suggs, maybe with some sort of payment of 1sts if people get up in arms. Maybe run a 1 time amnesty program for the whole league. Or we do nothing. I don't know, just throwing ideas out there.
chipper- I would take him on. autumn harold has been reluctant to trade him this season because his team is very good- and that's totally understandable- but I might be willing to take on the contract if it meant I would reset. He's still a top, top player in this league. He's just overpaid on a long deal that will be impossible to move after next year most likely.
Steve - Habes will be able to trade him because I’ve seen him deal shitty ass contracts before. Suggs is certainly a heck of a PG, but at age 32 and still having 5 years left on that massive deal…I wouldn’t touch him. Having said that, all it takes is one desperate team in need of a PG and potentially in CY to ‘forget’ about that contract.
Pig- Aaron has been known to shed some pretty bad contracts, so never say never. With that said, the problem with Suggs is he is a regressing PG which makes the value less than say that of someone like Kuminga. I personally wouldn't have any issue taking Suggs on if the deal made sense to me. I don't think most GM's in this league are crafty enough to take Suggs on in a deal where they maximize value, I sure couldn't.
5- Top pick Mel Hutchins looks like the presumptive favorite for ROY. In hindsight, would you trade Hutchins for Wembanyama if you were trying to compete like the Kings?
DBW - I’d want Mel but I think the deal is fine even with hindsight. The Kings needed defense more than a scorer at center and Web is top 3 every year in defensive stats. I am very partial to bigs who shoot a lot with efficiency and Mel is that guy as a rookie so I love him.
chipper- I still think that trade was fine. This wasn't a Bob Cousy or Bill Sharman or even a Bob Pettit- Hutchins is a fine, fine player who's going to be extremely good for awhile- but Vic was a certainty. Had Hutchins been a "can't miss" like a Cousy- then yeah, it's too much. But it's not and both teams should still feel fine about it.
Steve - While Mel and Eddy Mac would’ve been fun, I don’t love the lack of stocks within that grouping. Either way, I always try to hit “42 wins” in year 3. It’s kind of dumb to enter year 4 when injuries can seriously fuck you over…well, I guess that’s less of an issue with our new 50 day thing, but still. I also went into that deal with few options, and certainly didn’t love anyone outside of the top 2…and at the end of the day, I certainly didn’t want that pick to drop outside of 2 and lose its value. Vic would not have been dealt for pick 3 or worse.
Pig- Tough one. Kind of like TT and Lew Hitch situation so I will analyze as such. If your window is 2 years or less and you can't wait on Hutchins to develop to where he can be a super strong contributor to your team then yes....I would do that trade. If you think your window is a little longer based off of your youth, contracts, etc then probably not. There's a lot of value to have a really great player on a rookie contract. A lot. But it's kind of a moot point if he is only going to be a strong contributor once your main guys start regressing.
6- Who’s your favorite to come out of the West this year? Do the Clippers win back to back titles?
DBW - The Clippers are the favorite but I think the Jazz are right there. I can see the Jazz beating the Clips behind a huge series from Suggs… I think they match up well. The Nuggets aren't as good but I can see Cousy being a huge problem for Maxwell. I’d say those 3 teams along with the Kings round out my top 4 in the West.
chipper- I think the Clippers are amazing and would be tough to beat. I still really like the Jazz though. I think there team might be as talented as any other team top-to-bottom. If they get going in a rhythm, they'll be hard to stop.
Steve- Clips are clearly a step above, but the Jazz are certainly in the mix, too. My guards just aren’t good enough to keep up with those teams despite a heck of a rebounding edge with one of the best front courts assembled. Also, the Nuggets are certainly a threat with Ellison and Cousy. That’s a dynamic duo right there.
Pig- The Clippers are too much for everyone in that conference. They run into the Hornets nest though in the finals.
7- How about the East? Who are your top teams to make it to the Finals?
DBW - The Hornets are the favorite in the East and my pick to win it all. That trio of Scottie Barnes, Terrell Thompson and Bobby Wanzer is the best I've seen so far. I wonder if it's the best in league history? The Hornets stumbled a bit in the last sim but I expect them to start running away with wins soon. The Heat and Magic round out my top 3. I wouldn't be surprised to see the Heat win the title.
chipper- The Magic and Hornets are just wrecking teams. I'd be shocked if they didn't meet in the conference finals. I'll pick the Hornets for now, though- I mean they just scored over 160 points in a game TWICE in the same sim!!
Steve - Hornets are the obvious pick, right? However, I feel like I like the Heat and Magic a little bit more, though. I really do like that Heat team quite a bit. Incredibly balanced, and they are a stout defensive unit. I like my guy Galo’s team mightily with the Mikan addition, too. I just don’t know if TT really made the Hornets the clear cut favorites out East like many think.
Pig- Buzz Buzz. For whatever reason though this team doesn't perform well in Fast pace offenses and hasn't for years.
8- Aside from another voided deal for Anthony Edwards, Royal has been awfully quiet. What do you think is a good package for Edwards? What would you deal for him?
DBW - I honestly don't know what's out there for Edwards at this point. I think the time to trade him was years ago. He's extremely good but now that he's going on 33, my guess is no one is going to offer their prime young talent for him. Maybe Royal can get a package of 1sts or something.
chipper- I would trade a Payton for him, for sure. He's still an excellent player, a UGA guy, and his contract is only 3 seasons. Would be great for any team that has other talent on the team trying to reset.
Steve- his value shouldn’t just be his pick back. That was awful, lol. I think it’s either put something together and try to hit 42, or get solid value for an all time wing. I get it, though…he is 32…but you need to get something tangible for him coming up in this draft, a prospect, or some valuable picks.
Pig- In the offseason? Not sure he can go for anything more than 5th pick overall? Is that too much? Maybe a good youthful prospect? A package of picks? Really depends on the team and what assets they have. For me, Edwards was kind of out of the question because of his salary.
9- Who’s your Super Bowl picks in the NFC/AFC?
DBW - I have to be honest… I don't watch football. I have no clue. (Ed's. note: WTF?)
chipper - This is tough, honestly. There's a number of teams I like. I do think the Bills and Chiefs have great quarterbacking going on right now, and as much as I dislike him personally, Aaron Rodgers has been amazing with very little help being given him. I'd say either the Bills or the Chiefs come out of the AFC, and either the Packers or the Bucs from the NFC. If I have to pick one for each, I'll say Buffalo and Green Bay. Roger Goodell's DREAM TV matchup amirite?
Steve - I’ll go with the Bills and Packers. Bills looked absolutely incredible, and I’m kind of pissed at myself for rolling the Chiefs over them in my brother’s playoff pickem…but I think I partially did it because we did this thing where we pick out of a hat and I got the Chiefs so certainly rooting for them to go all the way at this point.
Pig- Bills and Packers.
10- Any new year’s resolutions? Any advice for Ahsan as a married man now?
DBW - I'm hoping to buy my first home this year. I guess that's my resolution. Ahsan has been gone for weeks so I'm sure he's figuring things out and is having a blast. Congrats again bro!
chipper- I need to lose some weight this year. And for ahsan- happy wife, happy life. If she asks you to do something- don't put it off. TRUST ME. Just get it over with and then you won't get nagged.
Steve- I just wanna keep grinding away and get settled in the new apartment with the GF. Transition has been pretty solid, and we love it thus far. As far as Ashan goes, I hope you never have an argument like I haven’t with mine…then you know you have a keeper!
Pig- Meh, not really a resolutions guys. Drink less? Hit the gym more consistently? I have pretty much quit tobacco and use nicotine pouches, it took me a while there so maybe I try to get off of those. Have a lot of sex Ahsan. Just don't procreate GM's reluctant to deal James Harden or Jalen Green because I want(ed) those dudes.
DeeperThanSims - Ahsan just got married and appears to be on an extended honeymoon so I understand Spencer not rushing to let him go. At this point I think it’s fair to ask Ahsan if he will have time for the league again soon. If not, maybe he can step down and come back a different time.
