1. Would you say it’s harder to find a solid PG or SF right now?
Stevie B : I’d say a SF still. If you said upper echelon PG or SF, then I’d probably roll PG with that.l because the market is really rough with that.
greeme : Ideally your pg should be able to do everything. It is much easier to hide weaknesses at other positions. So I would always rather have a good pg. that said, pgs tend to have crazy tcs so there are always pgs that can help you win out there if you look. Sf is starting to get rough bc of the high rebounding sfs. If you start a C rebounder then your rebounding could be a problem
DeeperThanSims : It's probably harder to find a solid SF, especially since people are looking for guys that can grab damn near double figure rebounds from SF. There are probably a few guys not playing right now that can give you some Joe Dean action. I'm not sure there are many that can give you Wah Wah production.
2. What makes a perfect SF to you?
Stevie B : They can play strong defense and they’re a plus-plus rebounder at the position. They score the ball efficiently, but it can be done in different ways as long as they’re efficient (Example: Mack vs. Monk or Bulbs). Volume isn’t necessary, but certainly a plus.
greeme : Kind of odd question. A perfect sf would have 100s across the board except a 5 in passing. I would be happy with a low volume high % sf that had stocks and could rebound
DeeperThanSims : The perfect SF is Chris Hudson in his prime. Elite scoring, handles, rebounding and stocks. If I can't have that, I want an elite scorer/shooting and rebounder like Big Mack, or I want a solid shooter with great rebounding/stocks like Wah Wah Jones (just minus that huge contract though).
3. Who would you say are the five best SF’s right now in the league?
Stevie B :
1. Mel Payton
2. Mack Drexel
3. Koa Peat
4. Earl Lloyd
5. Chris Hudson
Honorable Mentions: Twyman, Houbreg, Lew Hitch, Monk, Bulbs
greeme : I'm not really sure where players are playing so it is hard to know if the following are even sfs
Mel payton
Peat
Hudson
twyman
fisher
DeeperThanSims : 1. Koa Peat - Peat has been that guy for a few seasons now.
2. Chris Hudson - Looks washed from a letter ratings perspective, but the game is still there.
3. Mack Drexel - I think he's currently doing the super sub thing for the Knicks. Still a big time scorer/rebounder
4. Jack Twyman - Going to give the young guy a nod here. He's already scoring an efficient 27 pts to along with 9 rebounds as a sophomore.
5. Dwight Swails - A lot of comments have been made about Clyde, but Swails is putting in work for the Pacers too. Developed into a 3pt champion, great rebounding and handling, even gets a block a game
4. When it comes to point guards, rank in term of importance: Handles, Scoring or Rebounding?
Stevie B : 1. Handles: Absolutely tops for me, BUT I care way more about the steal: turnover ratio. A guy can turn it over just 2 times per game, but what if he’s only getting 0.8 SPG? No bueno.
2. Scoring: Need my PG to score efficiently at the very least. Most typically get volume just because they play the position. Shooting efficiency is critical at this position imo
3. Rebounding: It’s important, of course, but if there’s a position to care the least about…then it’s this one.
greeme : They are all important, it just means you have to put different players around the pg. Oddly, if a pg doesn't shoot at all but has elite handles, defense and rebounding I think it would be easier to put guys around him rather than an elite scorer with no rebounding or horrid handles. So Handles then rebounding then scoring if you look at it that way
DeeperThanSims : 1. Scoring - Scoring PGs just eat in FBB.
2. Handling - Taking care of the ball is important
3. Rebounding - I think the difference between a good and bad rebounding PGs isn't drastic enough for this to be more important than scoring or handling.
5. Larry Costello or Kody Augmon in his prime. Which PG would you rather have and why?
Stevie B : Costello. He can score much better and he takes care of the ball relatively well enough. Plus, I think Costello has more room to grow. Wasn’t an Augmon fan.
greeme : Kody Augmon had a prime? Costello and I don't even know if he hit his prime
DeeperThanSims : I'll take Larry. I don't remember Augmon being good at all aside from being able to get a block a game, but maybe I need a refresher. Larry seems like he might have taken a step back from last season, but I think he's getting a bad wrap here. He is not the bench player people are making him out to be. I like PGs that can shoot/score a lot. Larry's handles are good. Unfortunately he can't rebound but I think you can cover that from a PG.
6. Similar to the SF question, who are the top 5 PG’s?
Stevie B : 1. Cloud
2. Cousy
3. D-Wags
4. Wanzer
5. Doty
Honorable mentions: Bauer, Groat, KC Jones
greeme : cloud
Cousy
Wanzer
Wagner
Scottie barnes
DeeperThanSims : 1. Cloud - Self explanatory.
2. Cousy - Our current reigning MVP. Looking a little funny in the light since the Nuggets are struggling to be .500 in the West.
3. Wanzer - Struggling in GSW but he's still a dog
4. Wagner Jr - My guy! Giving him credit for the absolute carry job he's doing here in Atlanta
5. Doty - Still don't get how he's doing it, but this guy is elite.
7. Positional D or STOCKS. Obviously we know how much stocks help but how important is positional D to you when building a squad? Why?
Stevie B : Positional D is really important to me on the perimeter. I care less about it with bigs. Don’t have a good reason for it, but I do know it’s pretty damn crucial to have good perimeter defense…especially at the PG position.
greeme : I would rather have positional D if I actually knew what it was. I prefer stocks bc it is easier to figure out a guys rating.
DeeperThanSims : I mean, I'm always asking for perimeter and post defense ratings in the draft threads, but aside from Spence flat out telling us, how are we supposed to know who is a great positional defender? These elite positional defender guys still get torched from time to time, especially the PGs, so box score watching isn't enough. I guess I'm saying this to say, it isn't that important for me when building a team. Stocks are king... the impact is obvious and they are easily verifiable by just looking at the numbers.
8. Are Bill Russell’s numbers about what you expected them to be?
Stevie B : Didn’t realize his steals would be that insanely high. Everything else seems to be in line for me. God damn he’s going to be a serious problem for us all.
greeme : Yes
DeeperThanSims : Don't take this as a complaint as Russell is a GOAT, but I kinda think he scores too well right now. I understand giving him the high jumpshot rating so he isn't completely useless as an offensive player, but now I'm wondering what is Wilt supposed to look like if Russell is already an efficient 24 PPG scorer in his rookie season. Maybe Spence starts Wilt with 100 inside strength and jumpshot but who is to say Russell doesn't get close to that with his potential? It will be interesting to see how things play out but yeah, Russell is like top 3 in the league already.
9. Which team is the most likely to knock off the Heat in the East?
Stevie B : Bulls? Cavs? Knicks? Lums could be a sneaky ass candidate if he makes a few more moves to improve the roster. Like many, could use an upgrade at PG. Would be scary if he got it. Cavs look awesome and biggest threat to Kobe if Arizin fixes his shitty stock: turnover ratio imo
greeme : Knicks. Really like that team. Skillz won't win somehow but he should
DeeperThanSims : The Bulls are the 2nd best East team, I'll go with them. They really match up perfectly with the Heat. BB vs Mel, Rixey III vs Noble, Groat vs Bauer. I think that series could go either way. The Knicks are leading the conference right now but their strange assortment of guys never get it done in the playoffs.
10. Getting away from the serious stuff, we learned Lums was invited by his coworker to a 3 way. Putting yourself in his shoes, what would you have done?
Stevie B : foh
greeme : Pass
DeeperThanSims : I would run far away, FAST! Maybe with a finger cross up. Be gone demon! I'm a married man.
