Braz offseason round table
Pardon me as I write this on 2G signal on my phone in South America. But need camps of course
Thank you to the fine GMs greeme DeeperThanSims and chipper for joining
1. What did you think of the season overall ? Mainly game winning.
DBW- The season was cool. We struggled for most of the year but made a little bit of a run after the Groza trade. I thought we had a good shot at upsetting the Sixers but they took us out in 7 and ended up winning the title. Congrats to Game! During the preseason I thought the Sixers had a strong chance of coming out of the East considering the trade for Braun and the improvement of Russell, so I'm not surprised by the win and he certainly deserves credit for it.
Chipper- Probably my favorite BBS season yet. Definitely my best team yet. No shame in losing to game, his team was awesome and Bill is a monster.
Greeme- Great job by Game. I was trying to move Braun for 2 years and nobody took him. He made the necessary additions to have a shot. His team besides bill is pretty old so this might have been his best shot also. We had a boring season. Didn't tank hard enough and ended up fifth. Of course when we all out tank we drop to fourth anyway lol so no biggid.
2. Sad to see Royal Cyd. Where did he go wrong? Does he have the excuse of a tough conference this time?
DBW- Royal was complacent. Sims of .500 or barely over .500 doesn't mean you are safe, you need to do something. He would have secured his spot had he made any solid move to improve his team. I don't like the tough conference excuse. If you failed to make the playoffs for 3 years straight and still can't make it in the 4th, that's on you. It's unfortunate because he seemed like he was into it. He was responsive on PMs.
Chipper- Didn't make enough moves. That tends to happen if you get to complacent. When I got CY'd with the Bucks (or was about to be but resigned because of family stuff), I made TOO MANY trades. This was the other end of the spectrum.
Greeme- Wait isn't the west an easy conference? I can't keep up lol. He should have had a relatively easy time being the only cy team. Lee was a horrible pick imo. He probably could have moved 3 for enough talent to make cy. Ah well, he will be back at some point.
3. Who is your MVP top 3. Not FBB since they always pick a pg.
DBW- Bob Pettit is my MVP. Bucks were the best regular season team behind his 29/14/2 blks. I'll put Cousy at 2. The Nuggets were good and Cous averaged 35/7/10/2 stls. Russell third. 76ers were good behind his 25/15/5/2 STL/3 BLKs. Ridiculous stat line.
Chipper-In any order- Russell, Cousy, and Pettit. They're all just absolute monsters. I have a soft spot for Pettit as a Hawks guy.
Greeme- Obv Bill. Anybody that can take Game and get him a ring is the mvp. Then flip a coin for the Bobs, Petit and Cousy. I would give it to cousy by a hair.
4. Huge retire class. Rank those guys 1-5 careers
DBW- Let's go Wanzer, Wagner, TT, Jalen Hayes, Mack Drexel. Vic on the outside looking in. Wanzer had a short career but he made a big impact. He's a MVP, Finals MVP, All-Star Game MVP winner with career averages of 30/6/10/2 STLs. Wagner gets next for being an elite PG for 15 seasons. Never got a title which is a shame. Sliding TT in next for being one of the most prolific scorers I've seen in this league. Dude didn't get shut down by anyone in his prime. Putting Hayes next. Guy was just dominant in spite of his turnovers. Mack last. Amazing career with 25 PPG/10 RPG averages but came up short when matched up against other elite wings.
Chipper- Wanzer probably top, being an MVP guy, then Wagner, TT, Mack, and Jalen Hayes/Vic in a tie for 5th. Mack bumped over Hayes and Vic for messing up the Orlando/Minny trade by retiring and causing Galo to forget how to math. XD
Greeme- Wanzer, Vic, Jalen Hayes TT and Wagner. Apologizes to Mack but defense keeps you on the outside looking in.
5. Thoughts on this years draft class?
DBW- I think it's good. Greer and Embry are superstars. Adrian Smith will probably hit 30 PPG in his prime. Guys like Rodgers, Dierking and Gambee look like they can be good players for a long time. Guys like Gene Brown, Shorty Patterson and Barney Cable look like great, long time role players. Can't complain.
Chipper- It's a solid class- Embry and Greer are awesome, and I like Rodgers, Dierking, and Smith a lot. Gambee's notes sucked but his ratings look good so maybe he can live up to them? All I know is the names in this one were pretty varied.
Greeme- Greer will be insane. I'm not a big Embry fan. If you can't shoot mid then it would be better if you don't shoot at all but with his inside and strength he will shoot and a lot. He still ends up second bc of perceived value. After that it was interesting, do you take higher pot guys? Do you take guys that are ready to contribute but probably won't improve a ton besides camps? And it was pick your poision. Bigs that can't blocks? Guards that can't defend? Etc.
6. What was your top 5 in draft
DBW- My top 5 was Hal Greer, Wayne Embry, Dave Gambee, Connie Dierking and Guy Rodgers. Gambee at 3 is probably the controversial call here as his notes weren't amazing but he has a great ratings base. He was right under Greer in inside scoring and appears to be at the cusp of B- ratings in both defense and rebounding. Hal over Wayne was the right call, if that was ever debated. Hal is going to be the next Cade. Connie and Guy are interchangeable. Connie might still be a star if he can actually score well and the steals are really good (to help cover to lack of blocks).
Chipper- Greer and Embry were close for #1, so more like 1a) and 1b), then I have Rodgers, Gambee, and Dierking in that order. I think. They're all pretty close to one another. It's the next two draft classes, particularly 2042, that are gonna be nuts.
Greeme- My top 5 was Hal Greer, Wayne Embry, Dave Gambee, Guy Rodgers and Dierking. Hal was the easy 1 and Embry was obv going 2. Gambee had ratings at the high end of most of his ratings. He could get a +4 after camps. Wouldn't shock me if he turns into Twyman. Camping him will be interesting. Guy will be a stud pg imo. Warriors hofer so how can't he be? Connie doesn't have the blocks which drives his value down but he does steal.
7. How many teams will tank for wilt next year and who do you guess wins.
DBW- I'm not sure but I've seen enough GMs talking about tanking for Wilt that I know not to try it. Making the playoffs should be breeze this year…. Hopefully as I did lose my best player to retirement. Hope HF gets him.
Chipper- If it were me, I wouldn't even be tanking in 41 for Wilt- the odds are less likely to get Wilt. Tank for 42. Oscar, West, Wilkens, Sanders, Imhoff, Shaffer, Attles. Those can all be awesome players and if you completely tank and end up with #1 projected pre-lotto, you're guaranteed to be getting an amazing player. If I had to pick who wins, I'm gonna go with the Warriors just because Wilt on the Warriors makes too much sense
Greeme- At least half the league. Obv in the end fbb will have the last laugh. Somebody trying to make the playoffs will end up with the 12 or 13 pick and jump. I hate fbb.
8. What will Wilts stats be as a rookie after seeing Bill Russ
DBW- I'd picture Wilt will come in and average 30 PPG immediately with amazing boards, but less stocks than Russell. Maybe 30 PPG/14 RPG/1 STL/2 BLKS? Let's go with that. I'm expecting to see A or A+ inside starting, let's go!
Chipper- 32 ppg, 15rpg, 1spg, 2bpg, 5 apg. You can't even get the game to imitate how good he was in real life, he was just on a different level than anyone else. From a "best player of all-time in the NBA" standpoint, Russell ranks higher than Wilt for me. But as a sim league player where there's no "intangible" rating or anything, Wilt should be the greatest player this league has ever seen. Don't forget- Wilt led the league in assists one year just because he wanted to. And it was TOUGH to get assists back then. And one other Wilt quirk- he NEVER fouled out of an NBA game. Never. That was tough to do back then when refs were terrible and called silly fouls. They still are terrible and call silly fouls, but at least there's oversight over them now where they could fix it and improve upon it. Back then, it was like beer league refs.
Greeme- Wilt was better than Russ. He was a better scorer rebounder and stock guy. The only question is what Spence does with his ft%. If he leaves it in the low 50s then his fg% will have to be over 55% which isn't always easy in fbb. 35 ppg, 16rpg, 2.5spg, 3bpg
9. Spencer mentioned a stip on wilt. What do you think it entails
DBW-Has to be a positional stipulation like "only can play PF or C" because we have many GMs playing bigs at SF and even SG here. Can't let that happen with someone like Wilt who's only weakness is lack of 3PT shot. If it's something even more creative, I'm looking forward to it!
Chipper- Probably that he can ONLY play Center and maybe power forward. None of this Pettit-at-SF crap we've been seeing. It makes too much sense.
Greeme- The obvious thing would be a positional stip. Boring! Just make a rule already stopping the stupid positional things. I think it started at year 1 with kvh at sg. Hopefully something fun like only being able to play in LA Maybe he will have to be the #1 scoring option. That could hurt his value for the 99% of the league that only run outside.
10. Random question- what is your dream vacation
DBW- My dream vacation is anywhere in the Caribbean with my entire friend group. The dream part is getting my entire friend group together to travel anywhere, let alone the Caribbean. Extremely difficult.
Chipper- Easy- Liverpool to see a game at Anfield and then do some Beatles tours. One day I'll do it.
Greeme- Hiking with my kids around the country. Really nothing I would rather do. Otherwise lying on a beach with a ton of books.
Pardon me as I write this on 2G signal on my phone in South America. But need camps of course
