Well we are back and the first ever draft class of BBS2020 is finishing up their first year! Lets take a look back at how the rookie class did during their first professional year. We have gathered all 45 rookies who have actually played and ranked them based on how they performed during their first season. We have also highlighted the players that we believe will take home the rookie 1st and 2nd team honors! Also three 2nd round picks in the top 20!
1 Manu Ginobili - SG Spurs
Stats : 18.9 PPG 6.6 RPG 3.7 APG 2.0 SPG 0.2 BPG 1.3 TOPG 43.7% FG 76.5% FT 39.4% 3PT
Manu came into the league via FA through his native land of Argentina. He had a lot of teams after his services and eventually signed with the San Antonio Spurs. They have not been dissapointed! Manu came in and worked really hard in training camp and it showed by the time camps ended. He is averaging nearly 19ppg 6.6 rpg over 3 apg 2 spg and a very low 1.3 TOPG. Manu is on a Spurs team that is two pieces from being a serious contender in the west. They need to add a PG and a C to go along with Manu/Zach/TMac and the man who should back all 5 positions up Lamar Odom.
2 Joe Johnson - SG Kings
Stats : 22.9 PPG 5.0 RPG 4.3 APG 1.1 SPG 0.3 BPG 1.6 TOPG 45.3 FG 78.7 FT 41.3 3PT
Joe Johnson's fortunes really did change this year. He started off the seasons strong for a bad Orlando team. He has a lot of work to do on the defensive side of the ball but there is no question he can light it up on offense and protects the ball well. A few weeks ago he got a call and was told he is moving to the west coast and joining the best PG in the league in Steve Nash. Immediatly he went from celler dwellar to championship contender and he has not missed a beat in doing so. Look for JJ to be amoung the league leaders in ppg in the very near future.
3 Pau Gasol - PF Suns
Stats : 23 PPG 9.4 RPG 3.7 APG 0.7 SPG 1.0 BPG 3.2 TOPG 42.7% FG 70.5% FT 36.7% 3PT
The number 1 pick in the draft has come right in and shown he can hang in BBS. Pau is leading all rookies with 23 PPG and 9.4 RPG. He is on a really bad team this year though and his shooting %'s and turnover numbers show the rookie has to try and do it all on the court for his team. I would look for Pau to improve as the talent around him improves over the next few years. Baron Davis and Pau is one heck of a 1-2 for a rebuilding team to work with though!
4 Dejan Bodiroga - SG Mavs
Stats : 19.5 PPG 6.0 RPG 2.2 APG 0.9 SPG 0.1 BPG 1.2 TOPG 48.6% FG 83.3% FT 43.4% 3PT
Talk about the ultimate snub. Dejan was left out of the rookie game because of what Manu and JJ have done this year and he will probably be left the all rookie teams as well. He has without a doubt been a top 5 rookie this year though and should not be overlooked. Like many Euro ball players he doesn't play tons of D but he is amazing on offense. He is averaging nearly 20 ppg on great %'s. He is going to have a very nice 5 year run in BBS for sure!
5 Gilbert Arenas - PG Lakers
Stats : 22.2 PPG 4.0 RPG 5.5 APG 1.8 SPG 0.1 BPG 3.0 TOPG 45.7% FG 79.9% FT 37.1% 3PT
Gilbert was upset that he wasn't taken #1 overall but he can't be to upset with where he landed. Agent 0 is averaging over 22PPG as a rookie and despite not playing much positional defens he has managed to get nearly 2 SPG in his rookie campaign. His TOs were said to be one of his biggest flaws coming out of college, and while he has work to do there he has managed to do better than some expected and with some strong offseason work he might be able to make that a strength in the future.
6 Zach Randolph - PF Spurs
Stats : 14.8 PPG 8.2 RPG 1.5 APG 1.0 SPG 0.3 BPG 1.1 TOPG 45.2 FG 85.1 FT 33.3 3PT
Welcome to the 2nd Spurs rookie on the list. Zach does three things on the court. He does all three very well. He scores, rebounds and he protects the ball. Is he going to block a shot? No....Is he going to pass the ball? No. That is not his job though. Zach is approaching 20 double doubles in his rookie campaign and looks to grow further with Manu and TMac in the future.
7 Mehmet Okur - PF Kings
Stats : 12.3 PPG 8.1 RPG 1.3 APG 1.0 SPG 0.5 BPG 1.0 TOPG 45.5% FG 81.1% FT 37.8% 3PT
Many thought Okur should have went Lotto last year. Well many were right. Okur was taken just outside of the lottery and he has proven many people wrong. Okur isn't a huge stats defender but he does play his position well otherwise. He has dropped in over 12 PPG and 8 RPG in his rookie season. He does all the small stuff. He hits his FTs, He doesn't turn it over. Overall a very good pick for the Kings.
8 Eddie Griffin
9 Vladimir Radmanovic - SF Bucks
Stats : 15.9 PPG 6.8 RPG 2.3 APG 1.0 SPG 0.2 BPG 1.2 TOPG 44.9% FG 70% FT 37.8% 3PT
Vladimir is another Euro player that likes to bring it on offense and take some time off on defense. He is on his 3rd team already this season. He has really felt at home in Milwaukee though. Vladimir is nearly up to 16PPG and 6 RPG on the year. He has also kept his TOs at a very respectable level. It is yet to be seen if he is going to be a long term starter in the league , however with some good offseason workouts he can make sure that is an affirmative.
10 Bobby Simmons - SF Bucks
Stats : 10 PPG 5.4 RPG 2 APG 1.3 SPG 0.4 BPG 0.7 TOPG
I'm not sure if there has ever been a time where I have seen a 1st team all rookie and a 2nd team all rookie on the same team at the same position. That very well could be the case here though. Bobby Simmons might be one of the most efficient players in the league this season. He pretty much doesn't turn over the ball at all. And he is shooting at some incredible %'s. I think he will be a starter in this league for the better part of a decade even if he doesn't ever become a superstar.
11 Eddy Curry C - Blazers
Stats : 19.1 PPG 7.8 RPG 1 APG 0.4 SPG 0.6 BPG 1.7 TOPG 47.1% FG 63.7% FT
What can we say about Eddy...Well he can score and score in bunches. Eddy came into the league with a reputation of being lazy. His rookie season he has shown that he has put in a lot of work with his touch around the basket. For his future he is going to have to add a few more things to his game, time will tell if he will be able to do that. However as long as he can score at the clip he does he will always at least have a place in someones rotation.
12 Troy Murphy C - Knicks
Stats: 8.2 PPG 8.9 RPG 2.1 APG 1.0 SPG 0.2 BPG 0.9 TOPG 42.7% FG 70.7% FT 29.5% 3PT
Murphy is who we thought he would be entering the league. He is a very good 3 point shooter for a bigman putting in nearly 30% of his 3pt attempts. He has also rebounded very well in his rookie campaign and protected the ball well. The rest of his game will have to take a step up to have a lasting impact but with some hard work in camps he should be able to accomplish this.
13 Charlie Bell
14 Tony Parker - PG Raptors
Stats : 15 PPG 3.4 RPG 4.9 APG 1.2 SPG 0.1 BPG 2.2 TOPG 45% FG 86% FT 30.1% 3PT
Tony has improved his game a lot in the short time he has been in the league. A little known player out of France he came into the league with a bad rap of not being able to shoot the ball. While he still has work to do from deep he is an amazing jump shooter and he can finish around the rim as well as any little guy in the league. So far he is not much of a stat filler , however there is no question around the league that Tony will be a superstar in the near future!
