Most Valuable Player Race
Tim Duncan - 29.7 ppg, 14.2 rpg, 5.3 apg, 3.0 bpg, 1.3 spg, .487 FG%, .858 FT%
Duncan is probably the front runner at this point and for good reason, he's the best player in the league. It really is almost unfair how good he is and he has carried the Clippers to the 2nd best record in the league without a ton of help surrounding him. Everything about Duncan is a dream he really is the perfect big man and has no flaws at all. Amazing jump shot and handling on top of the scoring, rebounding and defense is just really unfair. That's the best way to describe Duncan lol since he's so much better than everyone else!
Michael Jordan - 29.9 ppg, 7.9 rpg, 5.1 apg, 1.9 spg, 1.1 bpg, .465 FG%, .833 FT%, .395 3pt%
Most of the contending teams around the league were pretty crushed when the Nets were able to acquire Jordan for next to nothing this off-season and the way he has played this season is the reason why! He has made the Nets almost unstoppable at full health and definitely the team to beat in the league this season. MJ somehow got better in TC at 38 years old and is the best SG in the league which is crazy. Hopefully MJ retires after this season so we don't all have to get dominated by a 40 year old again next season!
Steve Nash - 30.3 ppg, 9.7 apg, 4.4 rpg, 1.5 spg, .503 FG%, .888 FT%, .434 3pt%
Nash is the best PG in the league and is having a phenomenal season for the Kings. Nash and Kobe alone made the Kings one of the best teams in the league and the Kings just had an undefeated sim after they traded Kobe so Nash can win with anyone. His scoring efficiency is second to none and 4.4 rpg and 1.5 spg is actually really nice too out of him. Obviously the assists are great as well. Kings will be a legit threat every year as long as they keep Nash on the team and build around him properly which shouldn't be too difficult.
Dirk Nowitzki - 31.8 ppg, 10.7 rpg, 3.0 apg, 1.1 spg, .494 FG%, .804 FT%, .461 3pt%
This might be a surprise to some that haven't been paying attention but Dirk is one of the best players in the league and has been proving it this season. He's leading the league in scoring by almost 2 ppg over the next guy and almost 11 rpg and 3 apg as well is definitely MVP worthy! Those shootings %s are really juicy as well, Dirk is a super exciting and fun player. His defense could be a little better and I would probably have him at SF but he's great at PF too obviously. It's pretty much just him and Billups leading that Warriors team to where they are. Once they get another piece or two around them then they will be a real threat.
Defensive Player of the Year Race
Alonzo Mourning - 3.8 bpg, 1.1 spg, 13.3 rpg
Zo has been traded a few times this season but he's been great defensively no matter who he suits up for. Leading the league in blocking at 3.8 per game and also tied for 3rd in rebounding with 13.3 rpg makes him a prime candidate for the DPOY award since FBB loves giving it to the great shot blockers and rebounders. The 1.1 spg should also help him as well. Zo being able to put up those numbers on defense as well as being a top option and playing 38 mpg this season has been very impressive. Zo now looks to lead the Heat deep in to the playoffs and possibly a championship.
Kevin Garnett - 3.3 bpg, 1.8 spg, 12.3 rpg
Garnett is another guy who could very likely win the award as he is having a stellar season defensively as well. What sets him a part from some of the other big is his stealing at 1.8 spg but his bpg and rpg numbers aren't quite as high as Zo or Shaq's so we'll see how much FBB prefers blocks over steals here. KG is young and still getting better too so he should be top 2-3 for this award every season for the next 8-10 seasons. The only knock on KG is he does foul a lot leading the league in fouls per game but that's the only knock on him defensively.
Shaquille O'Neal - 3.5 bpg, 1.0 spg, 13.3 rpg
Not the biggest fan of Shaq but he deserves a lot of credit for how he's been able to carry that Nuggets team this season. Especially since Stockton has went down they have went on a real tear after everyone thought their season might be over. So kudos to Shaq and his leadership for pulling the team together and going on a big run. He won DPOY last year and will have a great chance again with those 13+ rpg, 3.5 bpg and 1 spg. It will be a very close battle between Shaq and Zo for DPOY. The difference might be Shaq's rebounding numbers not being quite as high as they were last season.
Allen Iverson - 2.6 spg, 0.3 bpg, 6.2 rpg
Will be tough for Iverson to win the award since it usually goes to high blocking and rebounding big men but AI deserves some love for what he's been able to do this season. 2.6 spg leads the league and is an insane number that only one other player in the league can come close to. Also 0.3 bpg gets him close to 3 stocks per game for a 6' player that's amazing. AI is one of the best scorers in the league but really should start getting more credit for what he does defensively. Getting 3 stocks per game from your SG is huge.
Rookie of the Year Race
Joe Johnson - 22.9 ppg, 5.0 rpg, 4.3 apg, 1.1 spg, .453 FG%, .787 FT%, .413 3pt%
Arenas will probably win this award now that Johnson is on the Kings and his numbers will go down a bit but I'm a huge fan of JJ and what he has been able to do this season and he looks great with that B A- scoring now. 23 ppg, 5 rpg, 4 apg on great %s and low turnovers. It really doesn't get any better than that for a rookie SG. Johnson looks well on his way to being a 25+ ppg guy and could pretty easily reach 30 ppg status after another TC or two. He reminds me a lot of Allan Houston and might be as good as him pretty soon if he keeps getting better.
Gilbert Arenas - 22.2 ppg, 4.0 rpg, 5.5 apg, 1.8 spg, .457 FG%, .799 FT%, .371 3pt%
After a great pre-season, everyone got really excited about Arenas and Nanz may have gotten a little too excited as it has been a bit of a struggle this season for Agent Zero and the Lakers but he is starting to pick it u as of late and should win rookie of the year now that JJ is on the Kings and his numbers should go down a bit. Arenas is amazing and going to be the top PG in the league pretty soon and maybe as soon as next season so there is a lot to be excited about going forward for the Lakers, just needed to wait one more season!
Tony Parker - 15.0 ppg, 3.4 rpg, 4.9 apg, 1.2 spg, .450 FG%, .861 FT%, .301 3pt%
Not sure why Parker's numbers seemed to have dropped a bit since joining the Raptors but Parker is still one of the best rookies and arguably has the brightest future after his big jump in outside shooting in TC. If Parker has another good TC or two and gets the rest of his camps, he will be a top 3-5 PG in the league and has the chance of becoming the best PG in the league with his elite skills. Not a good 3 point shooter yet but already capped inside and jump shot and his handling will be elite after another TC or two as well. Lot to love here with TP even though his numbers aren't amazing this season.
Pau Gasol - 23.0 ppg, 9.4 rpg, 3.7 apg, 1.2 bpg, .427 FG%, .705 FT%, .367 3pt%
Pau was the #1 overall pick in the draft and has showed a ton of promise this season but has also had his struggles as well. Don't love the 3.2 tpg to 1.2 bpg and bad %s. But can't deny the 23 ppg and 9.4 rpg. Gasol shows a ton of promise when it comes to scoring the ball and his %s will get better obviously but he will definitely need to fix those turnovers and hopefully have a good shot blocking TC as well so he can be around a 2 bpg guy. Pau probably wouldn't have been the #1 pick looking back but he should still be a good starting big man for a long time.
Sixth Man of the Year Race
Theo Ratliff - 33.1 mpg, 10.5 ppg, 8.5 rpg, 2.3 bpg, 0.9 spg
Ratliff has played a ton of minutes and not sure if FBB has a mpg qualifier or not but he has been a backup for most of the season believe so he should qualify. Ratliff is one of the best defensive bigs in the league and would be a starter on most teams but the Grizzlies have loaded up on big men and that allows them to bring a player like Ratliff off the bench. Love his shot blocking and all around defense but could be a bit of a better rebounder that's probably why he's more of a sixth man.
Gerald Wallace - 25.5 mpg, 10.4 ppg, 7.8 rpg, 2.2 apg, 1.0 bpg, 0.9 spg
Wallace is a guy who could and should be in the ROY race if he was starting for the Blazers this season but he has been great in the backup role for them filling up the stat sheet all season. Wallace can do a bit of everything from scoring inside and out to getting rebounds and pushing the ball up to set up offense. And the best part about his game is his defense with the 1 spg and 1 bpg in 25 mpg and great all around defense. I'm a huge fan of Wallace and think he is gonna be a great player if groomed correctly.
Corliss Williamson - 28.2 mpg, 10.9 ppg, 5.5 rpg, 0.9 spg, .455 FG%, .753 FG%
Williamson is another guy I'm a big fan of and he doesn't necessarily put up flashy numbers but he is a great glue guy and perfect sixth man type that can back up the 2-4 really well. Williamson's best trait is probably his man defense so that doesn't show up in the stats put he still can give you some efficient scoring and rebounding to go along with that great defense. Corliss could be more of a scorer with all of his camps and a higher role but he has done a great job for the Clippers this season.
Christian Laettner - 30.3 mpg, 11.8 ppg, 6.2 rpg, 2.7 apg, .477 FG%, .767 FT%
I know Laettner has been a starter some but he has been a backup a lot too and will end the season as a backup. Laettner has quietly put together a really good season and wouldn't be surprised at all if he got a decent pay day out of his good performance this season. He is a perfect glue guy off the bench that can score, defend, rebound, pass and doesn't turn it over. Not a flashy player but just does all the small things well and helps you win. Really valuable as a backup 3-4 type.
