Reviewing the Off-Season Trades Thus Far The franchise player in Utah has been shipped to Portland.Portland Trail Blazers TradeRichard Hamilton Shareef Abdur-Rahim 8th overall pick Utah Jazz TradeAllan Houston Greg Ostertag Grade for Blazers B+ Grade for Jazz B+Analysis: I like this deal for both teams. The Portland Trailblazers are goin for it, and acquire one of the leagues best guards in Allan Houston. The Jazz are in that full rebuild mode, so acquire Richard Hamilton, who could turn out to be something with a lucky training camp. They also add Shareef Abdur Rahim who can probably be flipped for more assets in the future. The prize, is the 8th pick, which would eventually be flipped again by the very busy Utah Jazz. Denver Nuggets and Utah Jazz swap picks, along with an aging veteran.Denver Nuggets Trade:#5th Pick - Tayshaun Prince Utah Jazz Trade:David Robinson #8th pick - Jay Williams Grade for Nuggets: A+ Grade for Jazz C-Analysis: I get it for both clubs. The Utah Jazz traded for their pick and want a full out tank in 2003 for the cream of the crop of draftees. However, I believe they sold low on David Robinson, BUT I believe this trade was made prior to the announcement of retirements. Had Robinson retired, it would have been #8 for #5 and a huge win for the Utah Jazz. But Robinson decided to play another year and now will anchor the paint for the Denver Nuggets. Prince is a 3 & D wing who needs to boost his inside game. I envision him as a better James Posey in the future. I doubt he'll ever become a true star, but time will tell. He's a safe pick for sure. Jay Williams, on the other hand, is a complete boom or bust player. He's basically straight Cs right now. However, if he has that near 100 potential like many believe he may have, he could become a very good point guard in this league. We'll know Jay's future trajectory after his first training camp. Wolves, Jazz, and Knicks gear up for a 3 team trade to kick off the off-season.New York Knicks TradeSteve Smith Tony Delk Marc Jackson Knicks 2004 1st Knicks 2005 1st Heat 2002 1st Utah Jazz Jazz TradeGlenn Robinson Sarunas Jasikevicius Trade 2: Utah Jazz TradeKnicks 2004 1st Knicks 2005 1st Minnesota Timberwolves TradeJazz 2003 1st Grade for Knicks A+ Grade for Wolves C+ Grade for Jazz BAnalysis: Woah. Big deal here to kick off the off-season. As stated above, the Utah Jazz are in full out tank mode and they began to dump their win now players for future assets and youth. Here, they trade highly touted Glenn Robinson, and last year's free agent signing, Sarunas Jasikevicius to the New York Knicks. The Knicks essentially get two quality pieces for 3 likely late first round picks. Great value on the Knicks end. The Wolves likely should have cut the Knicks out and sent the Jazz 03 back to Utah for Glenn Robinson straight up. They easily could have flipped Robinson for better assets in my opinion. I don't understand, nor like the deal for them. The Jazz of course could have gotten more, but they get the real prize here, in their pick. The value that pick holds to Utah is priceless as it'll likely turn into LeBron James, Carmelo Anthony, Dwayne Wade, or Chris Bosh. The Pacers acquire former highly touted big, Keynon Martin for a draft pick.New York Knicks TradeKeynon Martin Indiana Pacers Trade#12 - Luis Scola Knicks Grade B Pacers Grade BAnalysis: The Knicks save cap here and acquire a younger, cheaper player in Luis Scola. Scola looks like he can be an impressive wing in this league with the proper camps, which I'm sure Skillz will give him. Keynon Martin, is a bit more seasoned, showing near 2 BPG last season for the Knicks. Martin has bounced around the league since being selected by the San Antonio Spurs in the 2nd round of the creation draft. He now is entering his final year of his contract and will have to improve in training camp to prove that he's worth a significant next contract with the Knicks. If not, he'll be a solid 3rd big man. He also have +10 available, which can be used to improve his rebounding and shot blocking even more. This move received a lot of criticism around the league, similarly to the Rashard Lewis deal...and I'm not buying the hate. The former "franchise" in Houston was traded to Indiana for....nothing.Indiana Pacers TradeNothing Houston Rockets TradeKwame Brown Pacers Grade B+ Rockets Grade C-Analysis: In a salary cap move, the Rockets dumped the former 15th pick for air essentially. We are entering the weakest Free Agent period probably ever, yet the Rockets want to clear cap space for....idk, Bobby Jackson? Don't get me wrong, Kwame is nothing special, but the Rockets could have likely received some type of asset for him via trade, instead they dumped him for free. It's a low risk/high reward deal for the Pacers who get Kwame for nada. Hate to be the one making this trade then handing out those grades, but here we are. But, honestly Kwame didn't receive much interest around the league and will likely be straight C+s after training camp anyways! Another piece in Houston moved for scraps..Phoenix Suns TradeBrandon Armstrong Houston Rockets TradeTrenton Hassell Grade for Suns B+ Grade for Rockets CAnalysis: Hassell looks decent and can eventually be a rotational player for sure. He has good defense and can nearly block a shot a game at the wing. Armstrong is nothing and is probably going to assist with Ahsan and the Rockets tank job. Sacramento Kings TradeKobe Bryant Orlando Magic TradeAntoine Walker Joe Johnson 2002 Orlando 1st Round Pick - Amare Stoudemire Kings Grade A+ Magic Grade CAnalysis: Yikes this trade looks bad. How does the team getting the former #1 pick in the creation draft lose a trade this bad. On the surface it was questionable. But after the Magic's 1st round pick jumping to #2, this is very very bad. The Kings fill out 3/5th of their starting lineup with young, good players. The Magic still have Kobe Bryant, but outside of him and Eddie Griffin, not much else. They'll need to make some more moves to acquire talent around Kobe if they wish to contend. Grade for Sonics C+ Grade for Nuggets C+
The Diesel ends up wit Seattle...Denver Nuggets TradeShaquille O'Neal Seattle Super Sonics TradePaul Pierce 2002 Suns 1st - Ened up as Jay Williams 2002 Sonics 1st - Nene Hilario, traded to Toronto for Raef LaFrentz Grade for Sonics C+ Grade for Nuggets C+ Analysis: The Nuggets traded Shaquille O'Neal for Jay Williams, Paul Pierce, and Raef LaFrentz. It's not awful. It's not great either. I don't think either team "wins" this deal, unless Jay Williams explodes in training camp and becomes a legit point guard in this league. The Sonics are left with a barren roster of Shaquille O'Neal and scrubs essentially. Like the Magic, the Sonics will need to add pieces around Shaq if they wish to contend and make CY soon.

Nah the C grade is fair. If we had put high end protections on the pick it would have been a B+ trade
It was an okay trade that could have been a lot worse but could have been better.

curious how you think it could have been worse... other than had he got Yao AW, JJ, Amare >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> kobe AI so far has outplayed Kobe, and with a better team in 00 than you have now, all I could manage was 41 wins. Kobe didn't outplay JJ by much last season...

Correct, that's exactly how it could have been worse. Conversly, if he had ended up with the 7th pick it wouldn't have been deemed as bad on your logic
The trade itself (prior to the lotto) was worthy of a C grade. If Forky had put protections on the pick it would have been a higher grade.
Forky will learn from it and he is visibly getting better.
As for your AI comment, Iverson is 27 and is likely in his prime. Kobe is 24 and yet to reach it. I'm confident we can reset our CY when we want too.

I would have seen it as almost a push had the pick not been involved. I know I would have taken JJ and AW for AI. The youth of JJ that is only going to get better and he's already good, mixed with a guy that was blowin up in AW. Gotta give Ashes credit getting the pick.

Saying Walker & JJ for Kobe is a push is a bit silly. AW & JJ are camped out and Kobe had +15 remaining.
Regardless, what's done is done

Those are some scorching hot takes Brian not trying to be scorching, more "matter of fact" from my point of view. You wanna argue AI being just as good as Kobe sure ill let you argue that but Kobe was not "barely" better then JJ. Unless having 6 more PPG and beating him in every other stat count as "barely".

I mean just look at your own formula, you have Kobe at 24.46 and JJ at 20.16. Thats almost comparing Dirk to someone like Sheed lol.
