you know what's harder to trace? cash not any more. 70's 80's yes... now a days... those sn are scanned daily. you got a number and it's used... banks do not keep a ledger of every bill SN that passes through their bank, you would get a book for one or two batches there's a reason banks are fined billions every year for failing to prevent laundering also, even if you were to suppose that every single of the trillions of usd are traceable as simple as "scanning a SN", BTC already does this inherently there are plenty of reasons to not be sold on BTC but money laundering is not one of them
