Bob’s top 20 draft in review!
Because who like unlucky reviews of only 13 players? Had to race to the vets yesterday for the doggy that had surgery 10 days ago, and while there I noticed my throat was a little sore. By the time my pick hit I was dressed like it was near freezing in the house. Gotta love when you kid brings home random viruses. So without further ado let’s get into it:
1 Seattle Sonics (from Mavs) - DON BARKSDALE
Draft Guru said - Barksdale is a big time talent. Can score inside and out. Handle, stocks, boards. Should be very good.
A : Marty hit it on this pick, as he or Red could easily be the top pick. Don is gonna come in hot as a legit scorer as a big man with stocks, but can he actually defend?
2 Dallas Mavericks (from Sonics)- RED ROCHA
Draft Guru said - Elite big man. Very good mid range scorer. Blocks. Good overall defender. Should get better as an inside scorer and rebounder.
A: Red looks like he may have a handles issue as that is one thing really separating the draft notes on the two. Should be something that camps are saved for before +24ing this big boy.
3 Orlando Magic- GEORGE BROWN
Draft Guru said - Elite stocks, boards and handles.
A: In easily the best draft for big men since the inaugural draft George comes out sounding like a better version of my son Andrew. Cant wait to see how George sims.
4 Washington Wizards- HARRY GALLATIN
Draft Guru said - Very good. Stocks, boards and can score inside and midrange.
B+: A big that can score and board, but like Don before, can he stop anyone from scoring?
5 Toronto Raptors- CARL BRAUN
Draft Guru said - Very good scorer that can handle and pass. Some steals too. Might be able to move to PG eventually but you'd need to camp those handles a bit more to take the handling hit.
A-: Really interesting notes on Carl. A guy that looks like he can step in and put up 20+ day one, and wont turn it over. Can he be a volume scorer that is a net zero stocks/TO guy? Based on his ratings might be best suited for a balanced O?
6 Orlando Magic (from Bucks)- JIM POLLARD (the gift from Andy pick)
Draft Guru said - Solid inside and midrange game. Good rebounder that defends the post well. Limited stocks.
B: Mark got a day 1 starter that can shut down the middle, and looks to be easily a 10/10 guy, however with limited stocks will anyone actually value him?
7 Phoenix Suns- JIM KAEDING
Draft Guru said - Very good inside and midrange scoring. Can handle and pass. Will get steals and boards. Could start from Day 1.
A-: A PG that boards, damn. Based on the notes should easily be a 20+ ppg guy with low TO’s
8 Atlanta Hawks (from Nuggets)- GENE STUMP
Draft Guru said - Can score from inside and midrange pretty well. 3 point shot is ok. Some stocks.
C+: Draft seems like it really started falling off here, will Gene at 6’2” be competitive at SF, can he defend, and can he put up enough points if he cant board or defend?
9 Chicago Bulls - DICK HOLUB
Draft Guru said - Very good scorer inside and out. Pot defense is elite. Stocks are mediocre. Rebounding could use some help.
B+: Play got lucky that the Hawks wiffed. A shutdown defender that can score, will go a long way even if he doesn’t have the stocks. I have a feeling I know where +16 is going on this guy.
10 Memphis Grizzlies- GENE VANCE
Draft Guru said - Solid scorer, especially inside and form 3. Steals and assists are solid.
B: Is this another wing that doesn’t play D, just gets steals?
11 Miami Heat- JIMMY DARDEN
Draft Guru said - Very good scorer inside and out. Handles are also solid. Very low strength and jumping. Poor rebounder.
B+: A nice pickup for kobe, and should fit in well with Herrero and Kuminga. With solid handles he shouldn’t be turning the ball over and adding another guy to score 25 a night, the Heat are back in the playoffs next season.
12 Golden State Warriors- IRV ROTHENBURG
Draft Guru said - Can score inside and from midrange. Good handles. Steals and boards too.
B: I’d rather have steals then blocks, but outside of stealing the ball does he stop anyone from scoring?
13 Miami Heat (from Nets)- JOHN MANDIC
Draft Guru said - No notes
C: A way undersized C but with intriguing ratings. If he plays to the ratings he’s a great add to shore up the D
14 LA Clippers- RAY EVANS
Draft Guru said - Extremely good shooter and ball handler. Should be a very good backup PG/SG.
B+: the type of player Greeme needed so a great pick for his team. Reminds me of JJ Redick. Might be the steal of the draft if he is as good as JJ.
15 Detroit Pistons- ANDY PHILLIP
Draft Guru said - Solid PG. Can shoot and handle. Defense and rebounding isn't great. Some steals.
C: Not much to look forward to with this guy, other than a solid backup PG that is cheap.
16 Sacramento Kings - JACK HEWSON
Draft Guru said - Some stocks and handles. Pronounced HUE-SON.
C: Looks like Steve drafted him just to see if he had any potential hiding in the A rating.
17 Cleveland Cavs (from Hawks via SEA)- SAUL MARIASCHIN
Draft Guru said - Balanced scoring PG. Handles are ok. Will also get steals.
C+: Another PG that looks like his best attribute is he’ll be cheap to keep on the bench should the starter get hurt.
18 Toronto Raptors (from 76ers) -DICK O'KEEFE
Draft Guru said - Solid scorer. Some stocks. Decent rebounder for a wing.
B+: The guy I was about to draft till Braz realized he posted a guy that had already been drafted. Looks like a good SF
19 Boston Celtics - WALT DROPPO
Draft Guru said - Extremely good post defender. Jumpshot and handles are solid. Some boards and stocks.
F: Not because I don’t thing Droppo wont be OK, but because I had copied and pasted Bulbs Ehlers onto the screen, but didn’t hit post, then talked myself into drafting Droppo instead.
20 Dallas Mavericks (from Lakers) - DICK FUREY
Draft Guru said - No notes
B-: Spence said he had 100 pot, and if that wasn’t a joke this Dick will be a furious PF, otherwise this pick was wasted.
