2003 Mock Lotto Preview
*Based on Day 15 standings and best available player rankings*
Will King James land in the Cream City ?
1- Milwaukee Bucks- LeBron James
SF 6'9'' 230 19 B+ C+ C+ C+ C+ A St. Vincent-St. Mary HS (OH.)
LeBron should be the hands down #1 pick and chipper will not hesitate if the lotto lands them at the top. James is a once in a generation talent and should really help the Bucks talent-barren roster. He should slot in nicely next to Jaws and Boozer for a decent set of options. LBJ should be the favorite for Rookie of the Year in 03’.
Projected rookie stat line- 20 PPG, 7 RPG, 5 APG, 47% FG
2- Houston Rockets- Dwyane Wade
SG 6'4'' 210 21 B C+ C+ C+ C A Marquette
D-Wade is the consolation prize for not landing LeBron in 2003 and it’s not a bad drop here. Wade is slightly worse in rebounding and inside scoring but matches his initial ratings everywhere else. Go Niners would probably still have to take Wade despite having DD on his roster and maybe slide him to SF, consider Bosh instead or make a trade.
Projected rookie stat line- 18.2 PPG, 5 RPG, 4 APG, 46.7% FG
3- Phoenix Suns- Carmelo Anthony
SF 6'8'' 235 19 B B C D+ C A Syracuse
Melo seems like the logical choice here after James and Wade. Andrew ’s Suns desperately need more points and they arguably get the best pure scorer in the draft at #3. Anthony leaves a lot to be desired on the defensive end but his scoring should off-set that part. Also at 19, Melo might have a little bit more in the tank than Wade.
Projected rookie stat line- 22.5 PPG, 6 RPG, 1.2 APG 45.4% FG
4- Orlando Magic- Chris Bosh
C 6'11''235 19 B C C- C+ C+ A Georgia Tech
In most other drafts, Bosh would be the #1 or #2 selection but falls to #4 here because of the glut of amazing scorers ahead of him. CB would be a welcomed addition for the Magic after dealing Eddie Griffin as he will bring much needed shotblocking and rebounding at power forward or center. breakthewalls /footy wouldn’t think twice of passing on Bosh at #4
Projected rookie stat line- 17.7 PPG, 10 RPG, 1.5 BPG 46.3% FG
5- Atlanta Hawks- David West
PF 6'9''250 23 B- C C B- B- B
This is where the talent drops off at #5, but you could do a whole lot worse than David West at this point. The big man out of Xavier has really solid ratings coming out of college although how much potential he has might be a question. Losanglife ’s Atlanta squad has a glut of bigs on their roster but West would hard to turn down at this point since he projects to be a double double guy.
Projected rookie stat line- 14.2 PPG, 8.3 RPG, 1.1 BPG 45.4% FG
6- Seattle Super Sonics- Josh Howard
SF 6'7'' 210 23 B- B- C- B C C Wake Forest
The former Demon Deacon falls just outside of the top 5 due to his scouted potential but overall well rounded ratings. Howard seems like a he could be a pretty good scorer with the right camps but his upside might a little tapped out? Either way, 13rock and the Sonics could look Howard’s way if he’s there outside the top 5.
Projected rookie stat line- 14.2 PPG, 3.3 APG, 1.1 SPG 45.1% FG
7- Utah Jazz- Chris Kaman
C 7'0'' 265 21 B- C- D+ C B- B Central Michigan
The Jazz’s JR could go several different directions at #7, but Kaman should be on the short list. The 7 footer from Central Michigan is a strong inside scorer and can grab a number of boards down low as well. His defense leaves a lot to be desired but should be strong enough to get better with enough camps.
Projected rookie stat line- 12.3 PPG, 8.1 RPG, 2.1 APG 46.3% FG
8- New Orleans Hornets- Kirk Hinrich
PG 6'4'' 190 22 C B C+ B- D+ B Kansas
Von ’s Hornets have a shot at one of the top point guards in the draft at this spot. The former Jay Hawk should be a low turnover-high efficient guard that can hit a jumper when needed. With some camps, he could be a decent starting point guard in the league for a long time.
Projected rookie stat line- 9.9 PPG, 5.1 APG, 1.3 SPG 44.3% FG
9- Los Angeles Lakers- Boris Diaw
PF 6'8' 250 21 C+ C B+ C C+ B France
This would be a great value get for Nanz ’s Lakers if Diaw is here at #9. The French big man is the perfect glue guy that you can plug in and he’ll make everyone around you better. He might even be a starter if you can camp his offense and defense to an adequate point. Either way, he’ll be a perfect fit for a team needing more playmaking and his defense could go up at SF.
Projected rookie stat line- 10.1 PPG, 6.1 APG, 1.1 SPG 43.7% FG
10- Philadelphia 76ers- Leandro Barbosa
PG 6'3' 194 21 C B+ C C D+ B Brazil
Barbosa might be the best value pick aside from Diaw in the top 10. The Brazilian native has devastating speed and a great 3 PT touch as well but is essentially a shooting guard stuck in a point guard’s body. He could be a starter with the right camps although his defense leaves a lot to be desired. Philly GM Stevie B could look to Barbosa if they are at #10.
Projected rookie stat line- 12.7 PPG, 3.3 APG, 1.2 SPG 47.7% FG
11- Toronto Raptors- Kendrick Perkins
C 6'10' 270 19 C+ D+ D B- C+ B Ozen HS (TX.)
After grabbing Nene last year in the lotto, Raptors solidify their front line with a potential addition of 19-year old Perkins. While still very raw, Perk should have high strength and shot blocking ability from day one to handle other centers in the league. It might take time to develop his game but GAME should be able to groom him and Nene into a great tandem in their frontcourt.
Projected rookie stat line- 8.1 PPG, 9.1 RPG, 1.2 BPG 43.3% FG
12- Minnesota Timberwolves- Mo Williams
PG 6'1' 198 21 C B C+ C+ C B Alabama
Like Barbosa, Mo is another undersized shooting guard playing point guard in this instance. The former Alabama standout is a deadly outside shooter and good ball handler and decent defender. He rebounds pretty well for a point guard too which should equate to him landing in the lotto. Jeb and @lumley316 could be looking Williams way if they are outside the top 10.
Projected rookie stat line- 13.3 PPG, 5.1 APG, 1.1 APG 46.2% FG
13- New Orleans Hornets (from Mavs)- Kyle Korver
SF 6'7''212 22 C A- C- C C C Creighton
Based simply on his top end shooting ability, Korver should land in the lotto. Korver can’t do much else other than shoot and doesn’t have a lot of perceived potential but can be a very serviceable player on a team that values efficient shooting. The Hornets’ 2nd lotto pick could be a nice 6th man or starting wing next year if Korver is here.
Projected rookie stat line- 11.3 PPG, 2.1 APG, 5.1 RPG 48.6% 3PT
