Good Picks of the Creation Draft!
Can you guys believe that the creation draft literally ended only a month ago!? Seems like a lot has happened in terms of BBS (and the World) since then. Pretty crazy! I thought that since there's been 2 and change seasons since the draft now would be a good time to do something of a look back. In this look back I’m going to take a look at the steals and good value picks! I’m thinking maybe a few per round. Sorry if I missed anyone!
Round 1
12. Golden State Warriors - Dirk Nowitzki PF
21. New Orleans Hornets - Alonzo Mourning C
28. Philadelphia 76ers - Antawn Jamison PF
Alright so technically Dirk at #12 might not be considered a ‘steal’ by the usual definition, but the value capitalization by Manasrai deserves the shout out. Dirk is still only 24 and has averaged 28/9/1on 48/77/44% so far in BBS2020. And because of silly contract rules for top 15 draftees Manas doesn’t have to worry about him being exposed to FA at the end of this year. Lucky!
Mourning is arguably the 2nd best big in the league (sorry, Shaq’s turnovers are unseemly!) and Pig got him at #21. Averaging 22/13/3.8 during the first 2.25 seasons, he doesn’t get the accolades of a certain other big, but the numbers speak for themselves. It will certainly be interesting to see if Zo, at 32, receives a full max offer in the upcoming FA apocalypse.
I hemmed and hawed over Jamison vs. Antoine Walker here. Walker has turned into a bonafide stud under Ashes’ tutelage. However, Jamison gets the nod here due to a more developed offensive game. While overall he’s only averaged 23.6 ppg in BBS, he’s improved his scoring every year. And you may say well the 76ers have tanked harder and harder each year of course his scoring would go up! Well to that I say, ‘Look at his percentages!’ This year he’s shooting 53.5% as literally the only option on this team. That’s no fluke in my eyes.
Round 2
47. Golden State Warriors - Chauncey Billups PG
54. Boston Celtics - Mike Bibby PG
56. Memphis Grizzlies (from Cleveland Cavaliers) - Brian Grant PF
God I hate to keep sucking off Manas, but the dude had a very good couple of rounds in the creation draft. I’ll group Billups and Bibby together here because I think they’ve ended up as very similar players. While Billups is off to a slow shooting start this year (47.0% last year), he and Bibby are both efficient, low-turnover point guards who can be options in the right offense. Saying they’re steals because of the absolute trash point guards taken before them (hello, Baron Davis and Stephon Marbury!).
I won’t spend too much time tooting my horn on Grant, but I mean come on… toot toot! 22/10/1/1 on 50% shooting in 2 and change seasons is pretty good for the 3rd last pick in the 2nd round! Would just like to highlight he averaged 11.4 rpg last season. Nothing more to say.
Round 3
59. Sacramento Kings - Jamal Crawford SG
67. Indiana Pacers - Corey Maggette SF
83. Chicago Bulls - Jerome Moiso PF
Fucking Crawford. After some consternation as to whether he could play PG or not, Crawford has blossomed into one of the pursest scorers in BBS. While his numbers aren’t as fantastic this year, he’s averaged 26/5/4/1 on 46/76/40% for his career thus far. Maybe most impressive is his ability to take care of the ball. For a guy who is high volume and has the ball in his hands a ton the 1.7 topg for his career is supahhhh.
Maggs was a bit of a joke for the first two seasons. Sargo protected him like the first son in line for the throne when the rest of the league saw him as the third in line who gets sent to a monastery to hump god for the rest of his life. But he blew up this year! He’s up to A- inside and plays pretty quality defense while grabbing a good amount of boards. This year he’s at 24/8/1/1 on 45% shooting. Pretty good for where he was drafted (Richard Hamilton was taken two picks before him)!
Man does Moiso make me moist ohhhhh. Struggling with the offense a little this year (seems to be going around the league!), but the defense is super good. And still only 24. Last year he was at 18/8/1/1 on 45% shooting. Sabonis and Brad Miller went before him!
Round 4
100. Detroit Pistons - PJ Brown
101. Utah Jazz - Bobby Jackson
115. Los Angeles Clippers - Corliss Williamson
The league is extremely in need of rebounding and Mr. Brown is here to deliver. While he’s a pedestrian scorer he cleans up the glass well (averaging 9.3 rpg for his career; above 10.1 for past two seasons). He also chips in 2.5 stocks. A real quality big that a lot of people passed over!
I think there’s a real argument to be made that Bobby Jax was the most valuable player during their championship run in the first season. Yes, Hue and D-Rob were great, but a point guard who averages 18 ppg with only 1.8 topg is quite good! Again, this is the 4th round! The Jazz did a good job drafting overall and grabbing BJ here might have been their most important pick. I mean, Eric Snow went at #85.
Corliss isn’t a star by any means, but man he’s way better than people give him credit for. Averaging 12 ppg, on 47% shooting, and 6 rpg over his career, Williamson has carved out a nice career as a 6th man. Evidence of his value? Heat trade for him and they start winning games again! Coincidence? Maybe!
Round 5
131. Seattle Supersonics (from San Antonio Spurs via Detroit Pistons) - Danny Fortson
143. Memphis Grizzlies - Todd MacCulloch
Fortson is another guy who looks to be another great bench piece, but in his first season with the Sonics he averaged 15/11/1.2 stocks. That is pretty good quality and would probably qualify him to be a starter on a competing team this year.
I mean did you guys think I wouldn’t mention T-Macc?? My very large son is doing 9/7/1.4 stocks for his career and is the perfect 3rd big man for any competing team. I miss him and I wish Game would have traded to me for a 2nd round pick, but alas.
Round 6
150. Chicago Bulls - Tony Massenberg
154. San Antonio Spurs (from Hornets) - Jim McIlvaine
Massenburg was one of the main building blocks of the Bulls’ first year run. Dude averaged 17/8/1.9 stocks in the first year. He’s fallen off a little recently, but is still a more than capable backup. Can’t ask for out of the 150th player picked.
James Mac is a bit of a one trick pony, but that one trick is shotblocking and that carries a lot of value. He’s a career 7/7/2/1 big and that’s a legit starter in today’s league.
Other Really Good Picks:
175. Sacramento Kings - Khalid El-Amin PG (Round 7)
180. Miami Heat - Marc Jackson C (Round 7)
207. Denver Nuggets - Shawn Bradley C (Round 8)
246. Cleveland Cavaliers (from Phoenix Suns) - Tom Gugliotta PF (Round 9)
307. Detroit Pistons - Mahmoud Abdul-Rauf SG (Round 11)
Amin has turned into a bonafide starter. Jackson had a nice TC bump and can score now. Bradley is doing like 6.5 stocks this season. Gugliotta has been a very good backup. MAR can score.
I hope I got everyone, but I’m sure I didn’t. Let me know who I missed as a good value/steal pick!
