The 1951 NBA Draft. Let’s be honest, we didn’t really care. We knew what draft was coming and yet all had a pretty collective sigh about it. So, what happened? Before we even get to the actual draft, it all began in the days before the draft.

The Draft Notes thread, which typically gives us notes about certain players along with questions and answers about dudes turned into something completely different. We’re used to the rants of play but this thread went ahead and spanned multiple pages of complain not just play but other GM’s in regard to how bad the draft was, how bad these old drafts were and just how much it sucks to have a pick in this thread. Why does this matter? Two reasons. Lost in this thread were a few notes that some people complained about in regards to not wanting to search through the mess for. The other being Ernie Barret. Who the fuck is Ernie Barret you may ask? Apparently, nicknamed Black Jack, he played one season for Boston before retiring, returning then retiring again? Idk. Chipper likely knows better then me. Why does he matter? Because, Spencer apparently said when asked about his jump shot and stocks “elite’. You can see why he’d likely go higher but he ended up going much higher then most imagined.
Also, before we even head into the draft, we have to bring up the traded pick thread:

Why is this relevant? Well because, the thread clearly showed the Lakers had ownership of the Sonics 1st during this draft and Spencer brought it up. After a bit of confusing times, don discovered the issue. Sonics traded the pick twice:

and then:

So what happened? I’d imagine Marty just missed moving the pick. That simple. Sucks for all involved but this pick has ramifications for all, especially Seattle since this cost them a solid price. We’ll get to that soon.
So finally, the draft has started. All seemed normal and then we get to pick 6. The Bulls selected Ernie and the crowd goes, huh? The notes get brought up and some state that it was missed. I’m also still interested to see who told play about the dude. That said, because of play’s complain in said thread before and what happened after, this pick HAD TO have been made by play. Like imagine someone not active making this pick? We need play’s fuckery to follow the career of Mr. Barret in BBS. Shortly after, the pick was brought up again. Not much of relevance was said here, although Geroge Dempsey being drafted “via text” is interesting. We’ll see why soon. So, skipping through the rest of the draft, we get to the end results of the pick fuckery.

So, let’s take this team by team. The Lakers get nothing. Cool. The Heat get 3 AC’s to use where they want. Seems fine. The Sonics lose their MLE/LLE’s and WR AC. Rough. What makes it worse is that they are in their CY. While Marty kept pleading his case, nothing was changing. Or so we thought. We discovered later that the Sonics would also be sending the Heat their 35 1st. While it was stated in the draft thread, it wasn’t in this thread. Rough. Also, another change was that the Lakers were able to remove Fred Schaus 2 yr deal from their roster because they were not aware of the lotto they had. Even though it was in the draft picks thread and they texted in a pick. Idk. Shooters shoot though or something. Either way, while the Heat and the Lakers benefited big time, the Sonics suffered some major consequences.
Going back to Barret, Spencer realized what happened and stated that he did not, in fact, have elite stocks. Obviously this changed his stock (heh) big time. What came out of this? Spencer gave him 6 AC’s. For free. With 3 of them being able to go over 85. Obviously we don’t know, because TC hasn’t been camped and the season hasn’t started, how he sims or anything like that but so far he’s an interesting spec for sure.
Of course, things should be ending their but nope. The nice little bow to top this off is the Heat stealing Barksdale from the Lakers. The Sonics are chugging along and play is riding around the block in his new scooter waiting for TC. This draft overall is rather blah but won’t be forgotten for all the stuff that surrounded it. The ramifications of this draft will be felt for many seasons going forward. In terms of talent, this will never be mistakes for a good draft but in terms of the surrounding issues? It has to be considered a top tier draft for BBS.
