A new day and a new league leader in PPG in BBS. Through 33 games Dimitris Diamtidis (henceforth called DD) is averaging 33.4 points per game and is carrying the Rockets to a much better record than GM Go Niners would like. Or is he? Just like the previous two player spotlights DD is lacking the defense category. Coming in with a C defense rating, he is a half grade higher than Arenas is so maybe he is getting lit up slightly less? Why did Spence make him so good? 53% from the field? 2.2 PPG in his rookie season. He might have the best splits in the league, especially considering the volume he’s putting up. Let’s take a deeper dive into some of the Rockets most recent box scores.
Day 44: SuperSonics vs Rockets
DD: 14 of 24 for 40 points
Aaron McKie: 5 of 17 for 14 points
A pretty bad comparison to start this analysis off with as Aaron McKie barely qualifies for an LLE offer. His performance in this game shows why! 29% from the field against a C rated defender. On the opposing team DD has a hyper efficient night going for 40 points on 24 shot attempts in part because of his 6 of 11 performance from 3 point land. McKie shits the bed while DD has a fantastic game. This round goes to DD.
Day 42: Jazz vs Rockets
DD: 13 of 22 for 40 points
Toni Kukoc: (lol) 7 of 13 for 19 points
Jumaine Jones: 3 of 6 for 7 points
DD has an even better night than Day 44 as he scores 40 again on 2 fewer shots than Day 44. 0 turnovers! 3 steals. What we don’t like to see is erstwhile role player Toni Kukoc shooting over 50% from the field and going for 19 points. Jumaine Jones also joins the party with an efficient night, albeit on only 6 shots. The tag team of Kukoc and Jones combine for comparable efficiency to DD, but based on the volume DD puts up I am going to give this round to DD.
Day 41: Clippers vs Rockets
DD: 8 of 20 for 22 points
Eddie Jones: 11 of 15 for 26 points
The first subpar night for DD in this analysis is still not all that terrible. 22 points on 20 shots is very respectable. However, Mr. Eddie Jones has a career night (not fact checked) going for 26 points en route to a 73% shooting performance. Going for 4 more points on five fewer shots leads to an easy choice to give this round to NOT DD
Day 40: Rockets vs Lakers
DD: 19 of 32 for 50 points
Jamal Mashburn: 8 of 14 for 22 points
Here we have an awesome matchup of super efficient nights from both players in the SG role. Mashburn is one of the more underrated players in this file and has a solid night here. Unfortunately for him, he has to deal with 32 shot attempts from DD. This is a tough comparison because DD makes more shots than Mashburn attempts, but both shoot over 50% from the field. Strictly based on the volume, I have to give this round to DD
Day 39 Rockets vs Nuggets
DD: 20 of 34 for 54 points
Jalen Rose: 15 of 27 for 34 points
Jesus. Why did Spence make DD so good. 54 points! This man is unstoppable. With nights like this, the Rockets are liable to win any given game. Indeed the Rockets do win this game against a much more well rounded Nuggets roster with more talent. Jalen Rose does his best to try to help out in a losing effort and shoots 55% from the field this game. Unfortunately he is no match for DD and his 59% effort on 34 shots. Rose is a good player in his own right and honestly limiting him to 34 points is actually not bad in this matchup. This round goes to DD
Day 37: Rockets vs Warriors
DD: 14 of 28 for 39 points
Charlie Bell: 6 of 10 for 14 points
Mo Pete: 3 of 4 for 6 points
This guy is unstoppable. He really might average 35 or more PPG if not this year, sometime in the near future. You don’t like to see Charlie Bell and Mo Pete combine for 64% from the field, but it is more than made up for by a 39 point night, that almost looks pedestrian compared to some of his recent games. Does he ever score less than 30 points in a game? (Hint: Yes) It really doesn’t seem that way. The opposing SG’s combine for a more efficient night, but DD’s volume swings the pendulum in his direction. The winner of this round is DD.
Day 35: Nets vs Rockets
DD: 11 of 22 for 27 points
Joe Johnson: 15 of 19 for 39 points
Wow! A below average 50% effort from DD. 27 points seems like nothing for this guy. Unfortunately his below average, but still great night is obliterated by Joe Johnson. In a particularly egregious night of defending DD allows JJ to shoot 79!!!!% from the field while going for 39. He could’ve gone for 60 easily it seems like. A perfectly reasonable night for DD unfortunately leads to this round going to NOT DD because of the world class effort from JJ.
Day 34: Warriors vs Rockets
DD: 11 of 26 for 27 points
David Wesley: 6 of 18 for 15 points
An off night by DD’s standards is more than offset by David Wesley taking a fresh turd directly on the hardwood. Interesting to note that Wesley attempts the most shots for his team on this night, but is unable to convert on more than 33% of his shots. There’s not much to look at here for either player in the comparison and this round easily goes to DD
Day 33: Rockets vs Bulls
DD:10 of 23 for 28 points
Michael Finley 12 of 22 for 33 points
Michael Finley is a very good player in his own right but is nowhere near DD’s scoring horsepower. Luckily for the Bulls Finley is able to take advantage of DD’s lack of defense and have a nice, efficient night. DD’s scoring effort doesn’t disqualify him from this round, but his defense does. This round goes to NOT DD
Day 32: Rockets vs Suns
DD: 11 of 19 for 26 points
Baron Davis: 6 of 14 for 16 points
DD has a great shooting night, but surprisingly only shoots 19 attempts despite shooting 58% from the field. Baron Davis has a totally average effort in a 1 point defeat going for 16 points on 42% shooting. Despite a below average effort from DD this round goes to DD.
DD has won a ton of these rounds, which is very impressive. I don’t want to do write ups for each of his remaining games, but I will write who I think won the matchup so that I can look at a larger sample size
