What Song is your current squad? (West edition)
*Songs were selected based on the artist/team location and/or the team’s current outlook as of day 35 of the 2002 season.
Denver Nuggets- Royal
Current record- 15-9
Song- Flobots- Handlebars
Why?- Shortly after acquiring Alonzo Mourning from NY, the Nuggets have reach a top tier status in the Western conference. Covid seems to be making these moves with not a ton of effort as he quietly scours the trade market. He's managed to put a veteran but complete top to bottom competitive starting lineup in Tim Hardaway/MJ/Paul Pierce/Raef/Zo. He's doing it with no handlebars.
Memphis Grizzlies - Erbes
Current record- 17-12
Song- Booker T & MGs - Green Onions
Why?- The Grizz have perhaps the funkiest collection of players and positions in the league but still have managed to win the last 3 seasons. They have bigs galore starting with Zydraunas Illgasukas at C, Brian Grant at SF, Juwan Howard at SG and Antonio McDyess at PF. While effective, point guard Eric Snow took a nose dive with turnovers this season and shortly saw him lose his starting job to Andre Miller. While still green, this Grizz squad will find a way to win.
Dallas Mavericks- @aaronjh
Current Record- 17-14
Song- Vanilla Ice- Ice Ice Baby
Why?- This team is cold like ice in their veins cold - just like Vanilla was/used to be. With Ray Allen, Allan Houston and Manu Ginobilli on the wings, this team is destined to make it rain from the outside. Their bigs leave a bit to be desired but habes just needs a couple more moves to get this team back into the Finals contention.
San Antonio Spurs- @ukfanjohn
Record- 16-15
Song- Rae Sremmurd- This Could be Us
Why?- The Spurs seem like a really good team on paper – maybe even a title contender but it hasn’t translated in the standings yet. A contender - that could be the Spurs in a couple more weeks but time will tell if Lamar Odom, Tracy McGrady and Jamal Crawford can all co-exist in the same lineup. For now, the Spurs will go back to what they were saying.
Houston Rockets- Go Niners
Record- 13-20
Song- Kenny Rogers- The Gambler
Why?- The Rockets took a gamble after making the playoffs in their first season and going full on rebuild last year only to end up with Kwame Brown. This past draft, they redeemed themselves by getting stud wing DD who is now one of their franchise cornerstones. Gambles have paid off for Houston so far and hope to get lucky again in the lotto this year.
Minnesota Timberwolves – Jeb @lumley316
Current record- 11-18
Song- Prince- Let’s Go Crazy
Why?- It’s been a crazy start to the T-Wolves season this year. After handing out over $74M in free agent contracts, they still find themselves winning games. The Wolves have QRich and Scola plus not much else on this roster so they should start dropping soon. Game blouses.
Utah Jazz- JR
Current Record- 11-20
Song- Lil Mosey- Blueberry Faygo
Why?- The Jazz were coming off the high of their first championship in BBS20 only to fall hard in year two with a first round exit and now to extreme rebuild. At least it’s been a blueberry jazz high and jr is equipped with his pick this season and two other 1st in the next 2 years. Hopefully, that will help this team rebound soon – for now enjoy the high.
Sacramento Kings- ashes
Current Record- 28-8
Song- Deftones- Elite
Why?- The Kings have the most elite squad in the West and perhaps the league for that matter. It starts with point guard Steve Nash, arguably the best player in the L behind Tim Duncan. Then they have effective wings in Antoine Walker and Glen Rice plus a nasty frontcourt of Amar’e, PJ Brown and Ben Wallace. This team is set up to be elite for quite some time.
Los Angeles Clippers- darell frangie
Current Record- 23-11
Song- Tha Dogg Pound- Let’s Play House
Why?- The Clips have a legendary duo in Tim Duncan and Larry Johnson and also have a GM duo of Darell and Frongi. While there’s been some friction in LA, this GM/Co-GM arrangement has worked pretty well unlike some others around the league despite a few hickups so they played nice playing house kind of like Kurupt and Daz Dillinger. The Bobby Jackson trade might take them to the next level this season if LJ keeps it up.
Golden State Warriors - manasrai
Current Record- 15-15
Song- Digital Underground- Do What You Like
Why?- Manas quickly moved on from a core of Dirk and Chauncey early this season despite what detractors said. This is the definition of doing what you like just like the early 90s Digital Underground hit. A historically good GM, Manas should be able to bounce back quickly via draft picks and young prospects in his rebuilding efforts.
Los Angeles Lakers- Nanz
Current Record- 18-19
Song- Beach Boys- Wouldn't It Be Nice
Why?- It would be nice if the Lakers could reset their CY a year early just like the Beach Boys hit. The Lakers are in a dog fight with the Sonics, Blazers and Suns for the last 2 playoff spots in the West. LAL is currently in a good position and some big trades recently have helped their cause significantly.
Phoenix Suns- Andrew
Current Record- 13-17
Song- Linkin Park- One Step Closer
Why?- Chester Bennington (R.I.P) was a Phoenix native and former frontman for Linkin Park which came up with ‘One Step Closer’ kind of an ode to the Suns season. Their roster is relatively young and untested so far – Baron Davis at SG hasn’t been great but getting Rip Hamilton for very little was a nice move. Overall, this team is very close to contention but maybe another year from being in the playoffs comfortably.
Seattle Super Sonics- 13rock
Current Record- 14-21
Song- Macklemore & Ryan Lewis- Thrift Shop
Why?- The Sonics hit the thrift shop hard during the 02’ free agency getting Byron Russell, Aaron Mckie and Jason Williams relatively cheap. After splurging on Shaq, they passed out 1 year contracts to defensive specialists, veterans and other small pieces. The result has been a really good defensive team but a team that really needs some offensive weapons around Shaq. Hopefully, they can turn it around soon and fight for a playoff spot this year before their CY next season.
Portland Trail Blazers- Orlando Magic Johnson
Current Record- 15-22
Song- Everclear- Wonderful
Why?- Things don’t look great in Portland right now but Dan is making moves to try to do something about it. Dirk being shipped out to NY sucked but Jalen Rose, Elton Brand, Troy Murphy and Andrei Kirilenko should provide some great defense and scoring. Dan will figure it out and things will be wonderful again in RIP city i.e. the City of Roses.
