2036 BBS Free Agency Preview
A look at the top free agents this year and where they might land or stay.
Top Tier group:
SG Bill Sharman 6’1 175 28 Years B A+ B+ B C B
Last team: Pistons
Last stat line: 28.6 PPG, 6.5 RPG, 5.1 APG, 1.9 SPG, 49% FG, 47% 3PT
Analysis- Sharman lands as the most coveted free agent in 2036 and it’s easy to see why. After sliding down to the 4th spot in the draft, the fortunate Pistons were able to groom Sharman into an All-Star type wing who is just entering his prime years at 28 years old. Detroit seems primed to retain Sharman but there could always be a surprise. Only 3 teams at time of writing (Seattle, Houston, Minnesota) have max cap space to snag Sharman and neither of those teams have fielded winners in a while but you just never know when someone’s coming off a rookie deal.
SF Anthony Edwards SG 6'4'' 231 35 Years B+ A+ C A- C C
Last team: Spurs
Last stat line: 34.9 PPG, 7.9 RPG, 3.1 APG, 1.4 SPG, 2.3 BPG, 49% FG, 45% 3PT
Analysis- When compiling this list, I knew Edwards was going to be high on it but still astounded as his level of production at the ripe age of 34 last year. He’s been a superstar for the last 10+ seasons in San Antonio and has spent his entire career there thus far since GAME took him No. 3 in the 2020 draft. It’s safe to say Ant Edwards had a 100 potential and the man’s game is still blossoming to this day. I think he resigns with the Spurs on a large 1 year or 3 year deal but it’s unfortunate he doesn’t have a title to his name still.
C Jalen Mbala PF 7'4'' 215 27 Years A- C+ C A- B B
Last team: Pacers
Last stat line: 14.1 PPG, 11.3 RPG, 2.9 APG, 3.4 BPG, 40% FG, 73% FT
Analysis- Mbala is a nemesis of one Lasagna and tears of failure after he left the Celtics high and dry after his rookie contract and Habes is a not big fan of him either. However, Mbala is definitely progressed to be a top 10-15 big in the league with his improvement the last 5 seasons. Although he still shoots around 40%, his stocks are close to over 4 a game and he is consistently an above average rebounder. At only 27, Mbala is entering the prime years of his career. Indy would obviously love to have him back but he’s left a team once before so curious what kind of deal George puts together for Jalen.
SF Koa Peat 6'8'' 200 29 A- A- A- A- C+ C
Last team: Kings
Last stat line: 28.1 PPG, 7.9 RPG, 4.8 APG, 1.3 SPG, 1.9 BPG, 46% FG, 38% 3PT
Analysis- Similar to Mbala, it took Koa 6 (!) seasons to become a startable wing in this league. After the Raptors drafted him at No. 2, they gave up on the experiment and the Nets decided to trade for him then lose him after one season. Later, he landed in H-Town where Ahsan revived his career and now he’s in Sactown. GM Stevie Bishop has been trying to dump big man Victor Wembanyama in order to have enough room to resign Koa and it looks like he might have cleared up enough room just in time. He should have some competition to resign the former Sun Devil but Peat is close to 30 so it will be interesting how much he gets in the open market.
C Somtochukwu Cyril 6'10'' 240 30 B- C- F+ A A- C
Last team: Cavs
Last stat line: 15.5 PPG, 11.1 RPG, 1.1 APG, 2.7 BPG, 40% FG, 68% FT
Analysis – Throughout Svedda’s tenure in BBS, he’s been on the very fortunate side of things in terms of getting players on very team friendly terms and bargain deals. Will he have to overpay to keep Cyril? My bet is that he keeps him on a modest deal and brings him back to help the Cavs reset for his upcoming CY. There might be some other suitors but the Cavs can’t really afford to lose a big of Cyril’s stature at this point.
PG Paulie Fracci 6'2'' 197 29 C A A+ B C C
Last team: Suns
Last stat line: 25.4 PPG, 11.3 APG, 6.0 RPG, 1.9 SPG, 47% FG, 46% 3PT
Analysis – This writer is obviously biased towards Fracci but already he’s guided the Suns to their first championship in this version and won the MVP award in 2032 including an All 1st Team selection. Maybe Fracci will get more respect than he’s gotten recently as he should be in the top 7 PG conversation in the league now.
Second Tier:
PG J.W. Fullerton PG 5'10'' 175 31 B A- B- A C C
Last team: Lakers
Last stat line: 24.4 PPG, 6.9 RPG, 8.5 APG, 2.2 SPG, 44% FG, 69% FT
Analysis – On the surface, there’s a lot to like about Fullerton. He’s definitely got some volume and he was on a very team friendly MLE contract before. Now at 31, he’s due a pay raise and it will be interesting to see what kind of offer the Lakers extend to him. He’s got a below average jumper with an above average 3PT shot so definitely not your average outside PG but if you can get him back cheap, Nanz will be thrilled.
C Jalen Lewis 6'10'' 245 31 B+ C C A- A- D
Last team: Lakers
Last stat line: 14.4 PPG, 12.7 RPG, 2.6 APG, 2.2 BPG, 40% FG, 74% FT
Analysis- Lewis follows a long lineage of Jalens that invaded BBS but has been a solid frontcourt player for many seasons now following a slow start to his career. Nanz will have to be able to resign Lewis and Fullerton under the HC along with some of other moves for depth. It might be tricky but not sure if Lewis will generate much interest with the remaining teams with cap and believe he deserves more than the MLE at this point.
SF Julius Avery 6'8'' 225 32 B- A C- B- B- C
Last team: Cavs
Last stat line: 15.2 PPG, 5.6 RPG, 1.5 APG, 1.1 SPG, .6 BPG, 48%, 94% FT
Analysis - Orange Julius is that ideal 5th starter, glue type kind of guy in your lineup. He has close to 100 handles, good stocks, shoots it well but not a ton of volume. He’s definitely bounced around since being drafted by ashes in 2024 and we’ll see if he sticks it out in Cleveland with their upcoming CY. Seems like a super solid player if you can lock him on an uber cheap deal.
C Brock Call C 6'10'' 245 29 B- C D+ B- B+ B
Last team: Hornets
Last stat line: 10.3 PPG, 10.1 RPG, 1.2 APG, 1.0 SPG, 2.2 BPG, 0.8 TPG, 38% FG, 80% FT
Analysis – I have to say, I was impressed with what I saw from Call this season as Pig picked him up off FA scraps on a 1 year deal. 3.2 stocks to under 1 turnover a game? Very nice along with the over 80% at the foul line. His shooting percentage isn’t great but he’s definitely not going to lose you any games. Interested to see what he gets on the open market.
SF Zion Williamson SF 6'9'' 296 36 A- B- C+ B B- D
Last team: Heat
Last stat line: 16.2 PPG, 9.1 RPG, 3.2 APG, 2.1 BPG, 46% FG, 74% FT
Analysis – Zion still has some thread left on his tires but his best days are behind him. I’m sure the Heat will try to bring him back on a 1 year deal but he doesn’t have much less in the tank and should degrees soon. Still, he’s an effective small forward or backup big when needed in spots so he’ll have some interest.
