2003 Post-Notes Full Mock Draft
Round 1:
#1) - LeBron James SF 6'9'' 230 19 B+ C+ C+ C+ C+ A
Analysis: A fairly self-explanatory pick, no reasoning needed. Pig will take LeBron with a massive smile on his face and build the Hornets franchise around him. Notes clearly say that he is going to be the greatest prospect BBS will ever see and what makes him even more interesting is that he is allowed to play PG (while Spencer hinted that he won't be a 4TOPG PG there). That plus rebounding and incredible scoring ability can make him elite there though wouldn't be shocked if his future is at SF or SG. He is such a special generational talent to where he would go in this slot no matter what.
#2) - Dwyane Wade SG 6'4'' 210 21 B C+ C+ C+ C AAnalysis: A fairly self-explanatory pick, no reasoning needed.
Analysis: Now that we have notes, we know that this is the obvious pick here as well. Like LeBron, he can also start at every position including PG. He's already a plus scorer/rebounder at PG and can even have a nice future at SG or SF. That versatility makes him a special talent like LeBron but a couple steps down. He will also be a guy you can gladly build your franchise around.
#3) - Chris Bosh C 6'11'' 235 19 B C C- C+ C+ A
Analysis: This is the part of the draft where it gets debatable. This pick will be either Chris Bosh or Carmelo Anthony. Feel like Bosh's notes made him even better than I thought he would be. Elite bigmen do not grow on trees and Bosh clearly will be one in this league. The great handles makes him an even more interesting prospect as his B C scorer at age 19. The notes also say that he will have blocking/stealing. Then you factor in that he is a 19 year old likely with a true potential of A, you're pretty sure the blocking/defense will improve as will the rebounding while the scoring gets better. He can possibly be a ˜25/10+/2+ guy without turnover issues and if that happens, he's a franchise cornerstone.
#4) - Carmelo Anthony SF 6'8'' 235 19 B B C D+ C A
Analysis: That D+ defense just looks so ugly but the rest of his game looks amazing. Despite the lack of defense, elite-level scoring wings are incredibly valuable. His defense makes playing in the front court difficult so guessing his future in this league will be as an SG. In most drafts, he may go #1 overall but since this draft has 4 guys who look on their way to becoming elite in this league, I feel like he drops mainly due to that D+ defensive letter grade.
#5) - Chris Kaman C 7'0'' 265 21 B- C- D+ C B- B
Analysis: Now this is the part where the draft drops off. The C defense is ugly but his notes did bless him with shotblocking ability and good handles. Those attributes are great to have in a big. The B- C- offense and B- rebounding looks like a potential double-double big for a rookie with B potential (may not be his true potential but I'm guessing it's close as the notes say that he will be a legitimate starting big in this league). The C defense letter grade should also go up with training camps. Bigs who score/rebound/block while keeping turnovers down always have value. And when you draft this high, you want to pick the player you feel would have the most value long-term.
#6) - Kirk Hinrich PG 6'4'' 190 22 C B C+ B- D+ B
Analysis: In a draft which has a lot of point guards, you expect at least one to go very high. His notes blessed him with handling ability and he has B outside as a rookie with upside, B- defense as a rookie is decent too. He likely won't be a star (which is a disappointment for somebody picked this high) but he is a high floor player as his worst case scenario seems like a legitimate starter in this league. And finding good true PGs is not that easy in this league. If he can be a Bobby Jackson type long term, that would be amazing.
#7) - Josh Howard SF 6'7'' 210 23 B- B- C- B C C
Analysis: Howard has role player written all over him but his floor is so high making him a very safe pick. When I say role player, I mean a solid starter. When you have a top pick, you expect to get a guy who can be a major part of your team for many seasons to come and Josh has the tools for that. The defense/rebounding is great for a wing, his notes say he has good handling ability which is important and the B- B- scoring is cool for a rookie especially if you camp it prior to his first training camp. He isn't a sexy pick but he is the right pick.
#8) - Leandro Barbosa PG 6'3'' 194 21 C B+ C C D+ B
Analysis: The B+ outside as a rookie seems too good to pass up at the PG spot even if he isn't the best defender. It's the handles and scoring volume which are in question (no denying that those are massive question mark but if they are good, he's an outstanding starter). If both of those end up looking going great, he could be a great starting PG in this league. Either way, should go in the lottery as some team hopes that he is their PG of the future.
#9) - Boris Diaw PF 6'8'' 250 21 C+ C B+ C C+ B
Analysis: I am not a fan of his ratings but the notes were just too good to pass up at this point in the draft. Wouldn't be shocked if he ends up going as high as 5. Notes say he has scoring ability though the C+ C letter grades look ugly but letter grades can be misleading. The fact that he has good handles is a major plus. Given the lack of defense, I doubt he has much use as a PF/C (notes say interesting backup 1-5 but I don't see the 4/5). As a wing or backup PG however, the C+ rebounding looks great especially for a rookie with upside. Feel like it is a swing for the fences type of pick.
#10) - Darko Milicic C 7'0'' 250 18 C+ C- C- C+ C+ A
Analysis: Speaking for swing for the fences type of picks, what about the ultimate swing? Notes say roll the dice and the back half of the lotto is the probably the best place to roll. He could be like an Eddie Griffin type or a Kwame Brown type making him the ultimate boom or bust type of prospect. This is a good place to swing hope/pray you get the hit.
#11) (from ) - David West PF 6'9'' 250 23 B- C C B- B- B
Analysis: Looks like a potential double-double machine. Would have had him going higher than this slot but the probable lack of shotblocking is something which you do not want to see from a big. A bit on the older side, West is a true PF who can maybe play some SF in this league. He could go higher than this slot but feel like his notes really hurt him as they made it clear that he is nothing more than a fifth starter or key reserve. Regardless, he has a high floor and is a safe pick which is great here. Was hoping that he would be a star-caliber type but now seeing that there isn't much of a shot at that lowers him (I had him going top five in my previous mock). I still feel like he is a lottery pick due to the high floor but not really much of an exciting one.
#12) - Kendrick Perkins C 6'10'' 270 19 C+ D+ D B- C+ B
Analysis: Kendrick is a massive 19-year old kid already showing flashes defensively. Notes don't really say much about him, just that he is lacking in intelligence. Feel like that means he should have turnover issues but his defense/rebounding can develop well, it can possibly offset a lot of that. Just his age/size makes him the type of player you would consider in the late lottery/first half of the draft. It's a gamble but worth it here.
#13) - Nick Collison C 6'10'' 255 23 C+ C D+ C+ B B
Analysis: The notes stating that he is a good post defender to go along with the great rebounding probably put him into lottery consideration. Wouldn't be shocked if he goes higher than this slot but the rebounding alone makes him worth taking a flier in the late lotto of this draft. He isn't the type of big that I personally like on my team but he does have value due to the rebounding and post defense. C outside looks nice for a big too. Just not sure about his offensive game as a whole but if he can become a double-double type of guy, he will have value in this league. Possibly more suited to play SF due to the lack of stats defense but the offensive question marks makes that difficult. Either way, his notes helped his draft stock.
#14) - Mo Williams PG 6'1'' 198 21 C B C+ C+ C B
Analysis: Here is a guy who's notes really hurt BUT he still is a point guard with B outside and C rebounding. The notes called him a low-end starter but didn't say much about his scoring volume or handling which makes me feel like they are on the lower end. Regardless, he is a player worth drafting in the middle of the first round and working on. Just hoping/praying that he turns into something.
#15) (from ) - Brian Cook C 6'9'' 234 23 C B+ D+ C C B
Analysis: Here is a guy who in my previous mock, I wasn't even looking at in Round 1. BUT the notes just had me propel him 28 spots right now. All it says is that he is a shoot-first big with good post defense. Obviously that doesn't sound great but the fact that he has notes makes me feel like he has scoring volume as shoot-first tells me he'll take shots. He has the post defense to be a positive at the SF spot and C rebounding would be good for a wing. The lack of rebounding ands stats defense doesn't make him startable as a bit but feel like he has a nice future as a starting wing assuming he does have scoring volume to go along with that B+ outside.
#16) (from ) - Mickael Pietrus SG 6'6'' 215 21 C B- D+ B C B
Analysis: The B defense and C rebounding looks cool. Shows some shooting ability as well. The notes saying that he is a low-volume guy truly hurts him. Regardless, the overall skillset is intriguing. If you draft him, camp his scoring before his first training camp and hope/pray for the best, perhaps he can become a good starter in an outside offense.
#17) (from) - Jose Calderon PG 6'3'' 200 22 C B B- C D+ B
Analysis: This pick goes to the Timberwolves as it is out of the lottery (else, kept by Bulls). Calderon's notes did say that he could become a starting caliber point guard so would not be shocked if he goes higher than this spot. He is probably only useful in an outside or balanced oriented offense if you intend to make him a starter. The lack of defense is ugly but at this point in the draft, he would probably be a steal. If he has good handles and scoring volume that is.
#18) (from ) - T.J. Ford PG 6'0'' 165 20 C C+ B C D+ B
Analysis: The only positive from his notes was that he has a nice jumpshot which is a major plus, clearly he has good passing (though I don't care for passing at all). But the rest of his game seems like massive question marks. Thought the D+ rebounding looked good for a PG but notes say it isn't great which leads me to believe that letter comes from the quickness. How good he becomes depends entirely on his handles, scoring volume. Not my cup of tea but a good value pick at this point. I honestly do expect him to go higher than this because of name value.
#19) (from ) - Zaza Pachulia C 6'11'' 270 19 C+ C- D+ B- B- B
Analysis: Young big from Georgia (country, not state) showing some flashes as a rebounder/defender. Feel like he might go higher but it's always difficult for players with no notes. Also his shotblocking ability and scoring ability are question marks and the lack of notes makes him an enigma. But his rebounding/upside are nice for a 19-year old rookie making him worthy to go in round one. Just believe he is a dirty player.
#20) (from ) - James Jones SF 6'8'' 218 23 C A- C- B- D+ C
Analysis: Pretty ratings could even have him going higher than this slot. But questions about his scoring volume and lack of rebounding drops him down a bit though he could have a future in this league at SG.
#21) (from ) - Maciej Lampe C 6'11'' 275 18 C+ D+ D+ C C+ A
Analysis: Looks like a Darko to me and I had Darko in my top 10. It's worth gambling at this point so Lampe might be worth a flier.
#22) (from ) - Quinton Ross SG 6'6'' 193 22 B- C C- B D+ C
Analysis: He doesn't seem to have much upside but looks like he can be a solid player if you camp his offense this outside shooting. That makes him worth taking a first round flier on.
#23) (from ) - Sofoklis Schortsanitis C 6'10'' 345 18 C F+ D C C+ A
Analysis: This is an upside pick, looks raw as hell at age 18. Massive body at 345 lbs. If that A potential is true, perhaps he can become something. But he looks like he is 2 years away from being 2 years away.
#24) (from )- Mike Sweetney C 6'8'' 275 21 B- C- D C C+ B
Analysis: The last name waiting in the greenroom, last remaining player with notes. This 275 lb big is quite well rounded as his notes even say that he is an "over round interior scorer." Not sure what if it means he is well-rounded or if he just fat. But either way, the inside scoring and B potential is interesting. The fact that he can rebound some is cool. Not sure if he has the defense to be a good big in this league but he has B scouted potential and notes so obviously, he will go in the first round.
#25) (from ) - Kyle Korver SF 6'7'' 212 22 C A- C- C C C
Analysis: Already looks like an elite shooter and C rebounding is nice for a wing. If he has some scoring volume, he would be a nice rotational player. That's a big if making him a high risk/mediocre reward type of pick.
#26) (from ) - Travis Outlaw SF 6'9'' 210 19 C+ C+ C- C C A
Analysis: This is an upside play. C+ C+ offense and C rebounding is solid for a 19-year old rookie wing. The A scouted potential makes him look cool as a prospect. Whether or not he can develop into something, only time can tell.
#27) (from ) - Matt Bonner C 6'10'' 235 23 C+ B D C C C
Analysis: His future in this league will be as a wing. The C+ B offense along with C rebounding looks nice there. Major question mark is his scoring volume (could possibly even drop into round two). But if that is solid, then he is be a solid wing in this league.
#28) (from ) - Ndudi Ebi SF 6'9'' 200 19 C+ C C- C D+ A
Analysis: An upside play. He is the last remaining player with a scouted potential of A. One of those shot in the dark type of picks.
#29) (from ) - Marquis Daniels SF 6'6'' 200 22 C+ C+ C B- C B
Analysis: Following my last mock, the chatter I am hearing around the league is that a lot of GMs do indeed have a first round grade on Marqius Daniels. It's not that surprising as a wing with C rebounding, B potential, C+ C+ offense and B- defense does look cool. I feel like he is more suited to play the two rather than the three but regardless, could become an interesting player.
Round 2:
#30) - Steve Blake PG 6'3'' 172 23 C B- B- C+ D+ B#31) - Luke Ridnour PG 6'2'' 175 22 C B C+ C D+ B
