Minnesota Timberwolves: C+
In: DSC, Hicks, Leonard. Out: Gallatin, Saul, Solomon, Coleman, a couple other things. I actually like the roster a good amount after the Hicks and Leonard moves, but the window got shorter and the team probably got worse.
Utah Jazz: B
Probably moved Sears too cheap. The Barksdale-Gabe and Noble-Groza deals reoriented the team towards perimeter play, a huge weakness last season. Brought back Hayes and George. Pretty much the same outlook as before the offseason, but with a bit more value on the roster.
Houston Rockets: B
They lost Felix, but that’s not a big loss. Seem to have a drafted a second round steal. They’re running it back with an improved frontcourt. Should be solid.
Denver Nuggets: B+
Brought Vic back on a nice deal and added Earl Lloyd, who plays way above his ratings. They need depth, but they can be in the mix to win the West. CC has been noncommittal about winning because he’s tempted by the Wilt draft, but he should use his picks to improve. Cousy is 29 and the roster is plenty talented. Get after it!
Dallas Mavericks: C+
Hot Rod will be a franchise player—a major plus in an otherwise bad offseason. Drafted a defense-oriented big with no stocks at 10, spent significant cap on a two-year deal for a 36 year-old, and burned an MLE on Dylan Robinson. Dislike all those moves.
Memphis Grizzlies: B
Solomon is a nice addition. I really like Tyra. His TC was a bit underwhelming and I’m not if he’s had camps or potential added, but the notes were excellent. Grizz are having a weird rebuild but have four quality firsts this draft along with Eddie, Buzz, Tyra, Nield, and Ricketts. Not bad. Pretty fun, even.
San Antonio Spurs: A-
Got really great veteran talent without losing his prized rookie and just about guaranteed an easy reset. I don’t think they have the depth to win the West, but who knows—the West is garbage and we haven’t seen Lee sim yet. Could be scary if they fill out the roster.
Sacramento Kings: B+
Mostly about the Wells pick. I get Wells dropping to 17—the notes weren’t good—but it’s clear the A potential was legit, and he has the look of a good big. Great addition outside the lotto. Not sure what the rotation will be with Calc dropping to C+ rebounding. I still like him as an SF, but I don’t think that’s a fit on this roster. Bach could’ve been a great FA addition, but his rebounding dying in consecutive TCs makes him tough to use. Kings are the favorites in the West.
Los Angeles Clippers: B
Nice offseason for Greeme. He wanted to tank and got two solid-looking ‘42 1sts for vets who are solid but not very valuable. The Jones-Heinsohn-Sparrow core looks good, and he can tank for three seasons to add to them. Wild!
Los Angeles Lakers: B+
Goosed up Sears with +20 potential and has him looking nice. Brought the core back on one-year deals. Added superstar Javi. Added a solid SF in Felix. Kinda think this team is very good. Fullerton is as underrated as it gets here, it seems. Very sick player. No tank in LA?
Seattle Sonics: C-
They're killing Matt out there. Paying Gooms and committing to Morocco will really hurt. Doesn’t get better than the Dukes-Stokes-Guerin core, but this team has a lot of needs, starting with a backup big who can rebound and a PG who can handle and defend. They have an easy path to a few finals appearances if Matt can step up his roster construction and learn what works in FBB a bit better.
Golden State Warriors: B+
Cleaned house and added loads of first and plenty of cap. Not much else to say—good start to the rebuild.
Portland Trail Blazers: B+
Had a great draft. Didn’t have his own pick but came away with two guys with A potential. Lewis looks awesome—superstar if the threes develop, and Don gave him a real chance at that by tossing him +20. Still needs to unload a few guys to make sure they’re as bad as possible.
Phoenix Suns: C
Looks like a weak offseason for Phoenix. Schmidt had nice notes and should be a solid fifth starter, but you’d hope for much more from the sixth pick. Don’t think he’s been camped and we haven’t seen him sim, so who knows. Suns have a great frontcourt and two more years to build the rest, so they’re in good shape. Some pretty nice non-Phoenix picks on hand, too.
