1. Golden State Warriors Wilt Chamberlain C 7'1'' 275 23 A- C D A- A A
Grade: A
Obvious pick, nothing to say.
2. New Jersey Nets Rudy LaRusso PF 6'7'' 220 22 B- C C B- B- A
Grade: B+
I think he’s the right pick at 2, just don’t love him enough to grade this any higher.
3. Boston Celtics Dick Barnett SG 6'4'' 190 23 B- B+ C- C+ C A
Grade: B-
Good player, but I have a hard time thinking scoring wings who don’t defend or rebound particularly well should ever go this high.
4. Minnesota Timberwolves Bailey Howell PF 6'7'' 210 22 B+ C+ C- C B A
Grade: B+
I think this guy can be ZBo and I loved ZBo, but if you don’t get stocks or shoot threes, you really need to have that combination of elite volume, midrange, and handles to be a stud. We’ll see.
5. San Antonio Spurs - Bob Boozer PF 6'8'' 215 22 B C D+ B C+ A
Grade: B+
Consensus pick so can’t really dock it. Offense should be nice. The rebounds and stocks really need to develop for him to be a star, and he’s starting with a deficit. I’m not such a fan.
6. Utah Jazz - Mike Mendenhall SG 6'4'' 180 22 B- C A A- B- B
Grade: A-
Defense and rebounding already up to A/B. I realized last minute that he’s probably a big. The combination of very good blocks and steals with elite jump shot and handles should be nice at PF. Just need to get the rebounding to A-.
7. Cleveland Cavaliers - Johnny Green PF 6'5'' 200 26 C D+ D+ B A- B
Grade: B
Definite BPA, and I wouldn’t be surprised to see him get to A/A defense and rebounding, but he’s 26 and a one-way player. Going to be really hard to flip him for value, and he kind of forces your hand to compete right away.
8. Memphis Grizzlies - Tom Hawkins SF 6'5'' 210 23 B- C C- B+ C+ B
Grade: C
This kind of guy will have more value if we keep getting classes with no wings who can shoot threes, but I think he’s a fringe starter at best unless the stocks are elite.
9. Chicago Bulls - Bob Ferry C 6'8'' 230 22 C+ C- C- B C+ A
Grade: A-
Surprised he fell to 9. Obvious pick here. He has a long way to go but if you +25 him before TC and he has a good first TC, he’ll look like a big steal.
10. Indiana Pacers - Ed Kazakavich SF 6'5'' 195 22 B- C+ C B+ C+ B
Grade: C+
He doesn’t do it for me in the lotto. There are a lot of MLE types with this ratings profile. He needs to have real volume to pay off, and I doubt it’s there.
11. Utah Jazz (from 76ers) John Barnhill PG 6'1'' 180 21 C B- B- B+ C B
12. Utah Jazz (from Knicks) Paul Neumann PG 6'1'' 175 21 C B C+ C+ C A
Grade: B
Two guys with a chance to be starting PGs. Decent, though neither looks like a star.
13. Indiana Pacers Willie Merriweather SF 6'5'' 190 21 B- B- C B C C
Grade: A
Thought he’d be there at 15—would never have drafted two PGs if I thought Willie wasn’t gonna make it to me there. Has a solid chance to be a top five player from this class with a +25 to his offense. Good volume and stocks with good outside shooting—no one else from this class you can say that about.
14. Toronto Raptors (from Suns)- Tony Windis PG 6'1'' 160 26 B- C- C+ B- C+ C
Grade: C-
It’s whatever because the class was really bad at this point, but a 26 year-old C- shooting PG is super disappointing at 14.
15. Utah Jazz (from Lakers)- Gene Guarilia SF 6'5'' 220 22 B- C- C- B- B- B
Grade: C+
This guy does nothing for me. It says here that I drafted him?
16. Seattle Sonics (from Blazers)- Cal Ramsey SF 6'4'' 200 22 C+ B- C C C A
Grade: B-
Why not? He has A potential. Maybe his D goes up at SG.
17. Utah Jazz (from Nuggets)- George Lee SG 6'4'' 200 23 C+ B- C B- C B
Grade: C+
Solid scoring notes but no stocks. Probably useless.
18. Cleveland Cavaliers (from Mavs)- Joe Ruklick PF 6'9'' 220 21 C+ D+ C- C C+ A
Grade: B-
This kind of guy almost never pans out, but IIRC Zack Gross had similar starting ratings and notes.
19. Boston Celtics (from Pistons) - Harry Kirchner C 6'10'' 240 22 C+ C- C- B- B C
Grade: B+
Easy lotto pick if the notes had said stocks were solid. Camp blocks, steals, and rebounds and he’s probably a good third big.
20. Seattle Supersonics - Lou Pucillo PG 5'9'' 157 23 C B+ C+ C+ D+ C
Grade: N/A
Al Rochelle? No notes, so who knows. That’s my insight.
Grade: A
