Thank you to Stevie B greeme and autumn harold for coming down. Very thoughtful answers from some very thoughtful fellas! Sorry for the delay here was waiting on one more. *disclaimer- these were answered before pre and sim 1*
1. The question is not if but when. How long until Wilt takes home a title?
autumn harold : It’s definitely “if” for me. The Warriors built a win now team without a point guard, so I don’t see that group contending. The bigger problem is the inside offense stip--no one has won with an inside offense, and there’s a good reason why no one attempts it anymore. Your scoring ends up capped way below what’s possible in FBB because you lose threes and most players are less efficient when you go inside. No matter how good Wilt is, his teams winning is not a foregone conclusion.
Stevie B Certainly an IF because of the sheer fact that you have no optionality in the DC. You must go inside, and last I checked, nobody has won with an inside focused offense. I think you can win with it, but boy does it have to be a perfectly constructed roster to achieve that goal.
greeme My guess is it will take many years, if ever. It is not very easy to build an inside team. I would try just to dominate the boards and see what happens. If I would have lucked into wilt I would have tried running heinsohn at sg and George brown at sf. If that doesn't work try to go all defense at the 1-3. My guess is around 10 yrs.
2. It seems HeatFlash won the draft. And by that I mean potentially getting the best not wilt player. Rank your top 3 after TC non wilt
autumn harold Bailey looks awesome after TC, but I’m not up to speed on how much these guys have been camped and this is tough without seeing how they sim. For me, there’s no separation yet between Larusso, Boozer, Bailey, Mendenhall, Barnett, and even a few other guys.
Stevie B Not really a clue on this one. Like I said, I wasn’t around for the draft and didn’t really pay much attention to it.
greeme People jump to conclusions way too soon imo. I think Dick, Howell, Rudy but who knows
3. Any major steals from the draft from what you see?
autumn harold Spence essentially confirmed that Dwayne Smith was a steal. mattfaria12 make sure you extend him three years. Gene Guarilia going up in every category without camps was beautiful for me. There’s a leftover FA who went +4 whose name I’m forgetting.
Stevie B Not really a clue on this one. Like I said, I wasn’t around for the draft and didn’t really pay much attention to it.
greeme Too early, only after pre will we see how people sim. Ratings don't tell the whole story, in fact they tell only a small part of it.
4. We know the Pistons made the wrong move… but how about the Sonics. Did they rebuild too quick? Get a decent haul across those 3 deals
autumn harold Sonics had an abysmal offseason. Giving up on the Guerin/Stokes/Dukes core was a massive mistake, and their return on those deals was really bad. There isn’t a prospect on the roster who will come close to those guys, and most of the picks they got were bad. Terrible.
Stevie B Matt sucks, lol. He’s like the most unaware GM we’ve had here recently. Doesn’t really look at production. When he dealt for Ron Perry, you knew he didn’t have much of a clue. Lucked into that incredible core, and then dealt it away for not particularly good value. Also, it never made sense to rebuild anyway. As bad as it gets.
greeme Sonics really get pennies on the dollar. They got 5 picks for Guerin but I doubt that any will be lotto. Even late lotto these days is a crapshoot and late picks are just a waste of space and cap. And he took on barrett. Stokes for rogers and Patterson was pretty bad also. Rogers shocked zero good gms by not improving in tc and he actually went -1. He simmed badly last year also. Stokes is an elite big. Shame on you Play. The Blazers trade wasn't much better. I like Jordan and dierking but dukes is and will be better for the next bunch of years. In every case he moves better guys for multiple players. I don't mind that when you are trying to win and need players but I never saw the point of doing that to tank. Try to get greer for stokes, Guerin and dukes. Or whatever. Anyway to each their own. I sure that Matt will figure it out.
5. What is the most valuable position right now in Bbs. For a while bigs were scarce, pgs abundant maybe it’s now flipped?
autumn harold Good question. The retro drafts have been thin but have definitely rebalanced talent in favor of bigs. I’ll pretty much always value bigs the most, but you’re right that PG value is night and day from where it used to be. So difficult to get a great PG right now.
Stevie B Certainly the quality of bigs is much better because of this era we are in, but I think I still value them moreso than any other position. Hard to win big without an elite one no matter what. Having said that, and I can attest to this best, the PG position is shallow. I’ve been trotting out Dempsey and King who are efficient PGs in their own right, but simply aren’t the elite of the elite which has caused me some issues in the playoffs even with a stacked roster. Now, I am onto Howie Sessums. It’s tough out here finding a really good PG.
greeme It is certainly easier to get bigs now. I don't see why guys pay a ton for a guy like burdette when you can get similar guys for a third of the price. It isn't that burdette isn't better than the mle guys. He is easily but there might be better things to do with your money. Or I'm just trying to devalue burdette and then get him for exp. Idk. In any case we have a lack of good 2 way pgs. You have guys that score a ton but are a liability on the other side of the ball such as Rochelle and you have guys like gene who are the opposite. 2 way guys include Greer, Groat, Kc, Cousy hot rod and slick. And kc just went to B outside. Good thing Play talked me into getting slick.
6. A lot of older fellas on the block who can still ball. To you what’s the fair trade offer for a 28-30 yr old making 15+ mil?
autumn harold Hard to treat that as one asset class; that covers a lot of players. Generally, though, with so many teams tanking right now, it’s very hard to get good return for vets. If you have your picks, you’re probably looking at a second-rate prospect and unexciting picks. If you look at this draft as an example, which I think accurately reflects recent drafts, you’re probably not getting anyone from the top six, which leaves you with very few appealing options.
Stevie B This is too vague of a question. Always depends on the quality of a player. I can say it’s tougher to move vets right now because the drafts are lacking some quality after the top 7.
greeme To you what’s the fair trade offer for a 28-30 yr old making 15+ mil? I need more info. Age and salary are certainly not enough. Rule of thumb is to assume guys won't fall off a cliff or retire until 33/34 so ill assume 5-7 quality years left. And 15 certainly is not expensive, just the midrange of a rook max. ummm not sure what else to say. Maybe I'll take a few examples
Groat – top 10 pick
7. We are so far removed from Fakes now that most of them are retiring or gone. Who was your favorite fake ever and why
autumn harold Hmm. Don’t that I have a favorite, but I enjoyed the unconventional players who you can use in fun ways or who had extreme strengths and weaknesses--guys like Lebron, Hayes, Worm, even Loathe. I made Gabe so him too
Stevie B Peat is Elite! My 3 favorites are the following: Calculus Jones, Kevin Loathe, and of course Koa Peat. Partly because I had these 3 guys, and they all were so different from each other yet absolute quality players that could help you win big. Love ‘em!
greeme I don't really like fakes so I don't really have a favorite but if I had to pick one I would say cloud. Just a totally dominant player
8. In review did you prefer the fake prospects to the 50s retro?
autumn harold Fakes. The retro classes are vanilla and thin. I think Spence has tried to look beyond the facts that there were no good shooters and almost no star guards, but those things are definitely dragging these classes down a bit. And there just haven’t been as many fun/novel players since we’ve gone retro.
Stevie B Fake for sure. Looking back, I was really glad we had those classes. Not sure why some people were so dead against it. The Retro drafts have been pretty boring.
greeme No, I like the old guys. It throws a wrinkle in the game when you have to learn to adapt to different players and styles
9. Best 3 teams in west conference go!
autumn harold Kings, Nuggets, Warriors.
Stevie B Nugs, Kings, and Trailblazers.
greeme Clips, kings and warriors. Conference really looks bad
10. Best 3 teams in east conference go!
autumn harold Hornets, Magic, Bucks.
Stevie B Hornets, Bucks, and Heat.
greeme Bulls, hornets and raps but unlike the west there are a ton of good teams
