Looking back, this past offseason was one of the most interesting ever in BBS. A lot of big names were drafted, signed or moved. I’m going to take a look back at some of these moves and how they effected the way the season played out. Starting with the draft:
While much of the league attempted to tank for Wilt, the Warriors were the lucky winners of the Wilt lottery. Wilt might end up being the most unique player in BBS history. While sure, you have players like Cloud, LeBron and eventually Oscar that are SF’s with PG eligibility, no other player will effect the building of a team like Wilt. Having to build around an inside offense isn’t going to be easy and it will be interesting to see how the Warriors work that in building around Wilt. While some may have concerns about how stips, Wilt is an projected. He’s a complete and utter star already. Oh and we can’t forget his potential increasing often enough that he’ll never really decline.

The Sonics traded Dukes to the Blazers
The first domino to fall in the Sonics destruction might be the least interesting but yet, the worst of the three. Dukes is a 18/13 big who doesn’t turn it over a ton and gets stocks. The return for the Sonics included Phil Jordan and Connie Dierking (dumped for a pick), Cal Ramsey (the Blazers 44 1st, who was dumped), Joe Belmont and Lavender Gooms along with the Blazers 44. What makes this deal worst is the fact that the Sonics blown up might’ve been rushed because, just a short week before, the Blazers sent terrible Ron Perry to Seattle for essentially their 43 1st:
bbs2020.proboards.com/thread/15670/sonics-blazers
I guess in the grand scheme of things, the Sonics have the Blazers future in their hands. If the Blazers fail to build around their current roster, they may be looking for these picks back. That’s something, right?
How It Has Effected The Season:
Blazers: They just made the finals last year and the addition of Dukes was supposed to help prop them up. It hasn’t really. They are around .500 and just don’t look great overall. The Blazers have the talent to make a run again so we’ll see what happens.
Sonics: Connie Dierking was sent to the Raptors for the Kings 42 1st (https://bbs2020.proboards.com/thread/15921/sonics-raptors-repost) . Cal Ramsey was sent packing along with Guy Rogers to LAC. ( bbs2020.proboards.com/thread/15959/sonics-clips ). Phil Jordon went to the Magic here for the Magic 44 2nd ( bbs2020.proboards.com/thread/15953/sonics-magic )

The Sonics traded Stokes to the Bulls. Likely the best of the three offseason deals for the Sonics, they landed Rodgers, a former high lottery pick. Shorty, a solid big although not without his flaws and a couple of 2nds. The deal falls short of Stokes value IMO but it’s not horrible. A 1st or two in the deal would’ve been ideal. The biggest issue with the deal, aside from the annoying roster spot problems that seemed to stem behind it, is what the Sonics did with Guy after.
How It Has Effected The Season:
Bulls: The Bulls have done well overall this season. Stokes isn’t as dominate on the boards as he was for the Sonics but that could be for various reasons. Stokes is still an absolute stud and that’s what matters.
Sonics: Guy didn’t play a ton and was sent packing. Not ideal.

Richie Guerin gets traded to the Warriors. It’s an interesting trade for both. In a league that is notoriously cheap, I don’t know if a better offer was out there. Yet, would it have been better to get a bunch of stuff or one good prospect? And who was available really? Guess we’ll never know. For the Warriors, while Richie is a stud and you don’t turn down a stud for this package, the fit isn’t great.
How It Has Effected The Season:
Warriors: The Warriors are having a good season. Guerin isn’t. I don’t think anyone doubts that the reason for his down season is the DC. Still, it’ll be interesting to see what the Warriors do with a player like Guerin.
Sonics: Like Guy, King was just moved. Hatton doesn’t look bad but it seems like the Sonics have retained the B and C level prospects they got in the trades while moving the better chips for picks.

Hal Lear to the Wolves for two Magic 1st's. While technically not an offseason deal, it is a result of the blow up the Sonics continue to do so, fuck it. I'm adding it. This, along with the moving of Guy and King will make it interesting to see what the Sonics do with all their assets overall.

Before we move into the Pistons deals, one deal kind of set it off for everyone involved.
bbs2020.proboards.com/thread/15783/nuggets-raptors-offseason
The Raptors traded BB to the Nuggets for two Pistons picks. It seemed like the Raptors were going to enter into a retool/rebuild of sorts so they picked up some assets for an aging BB. Who knew what was coming next.
bbs2020.proboards.com/thread/15803/pistons-raptors-blockbuster
The Pistons traded Twyman to the Raptors for Adrian Smith, Chester Webb, Steve Hamilton and three picks which included those two Pistons picks. It’s not what you want. I’m sure we’ll have a better idea as to what the Raptors plan was before getting the PM about Twyman but man, nobody would turn this down.
How It Has Effected The Season:
Raptors: Twyman is still really fucking good and the Raptors are a solid playoff team. Krebs and Twyman is a very good core for the Raptors going forward
Pistons: Not ideal but there are bright sides. Smith looks like he’ll be a stud scorer long term. Hamilton looks like he can be an ideal 5th starter at either SF or SG. If the Pistons can luck out and land Oscar or West, who knows. At least it won’t all be for nothing. Even if they don’t land either guy, at least they have something to show. Still, again. Not ideal.
bbs2020.proboards.com/thread/15804/nuggets-pistons
The Pistons paid the Nuggets to take on Gallatin. Not sure what to make of this one. There are no positives in this one for the Pistons. No silver linings. No nothing.
How It Has Effected The Season:
Nuggets: Gallatin is still a really good big man. Easy double double with good stocks. Getting a future pick to take him on is wild.
Pistons: Ugh.

Elijah Felix gets traded to ATL for the Hawks 42 1st
bbs2020.proboards.com/thread/15838/clippers-pistons
Chester Webb gets traded to LAC for the Clippers 43 1st
I’m combining these two trades for two reasons. 1. Both the Hawks and Clippers traded what they believe will be late picks for solid role playing bigs. 2. The Pistons took both of these picks and moved them for a potential future PG in Mo King. While these deals alone aren’t great looking, the fact that the Pistons landed King with these assets helps.

The Celtics traded Sessums to the Kings. The deal itself is a solid one. Sessums never really got a chance to shine so it was a risk for the Kings. The Celtics signed him to a slightly above MLE level deal and got a future asset out of it. The bigger issue comes in the fact that the Hornets let Sessums go for a cheap price. Will it not matter in the long run or is it a loss that didn’t need to happen that may hurt the long term of the Hornets? Who knows but Sessums would’ve been a nice player for the Hornets to lock up cheap.
How It Has Effected The Season:
Kings: They finally landed the PG they have needed for a while. The Kings have been a well oiled machine for a while now and steve continues to make good moves to compete.
Celtics: They got an asset for a signing. 44 is a bit away but it's something.
Hornets: It'll be interesting to see what happens with this team next year. Lums seems fine with sitting on pig's team so we'll see what happens next year when the Hornets may need to start doing things.
bbs2020.proboards.com/thread/15780/ind-clips
It’s bad enough that Slick was traded for, essentially, not much. It’s another to have him traded to a greeme team. Greeme gets the most out of his players and Slick is thriving in LA. For the Pacers, you hate to see it. The dude you draft looks like a bust and has yet to get any actual PT. I’ve been there.
How It Has Effected The Season:
Clippers: Top team in the West currently with Slick having his best season thus far. I see no complaints from the LA's other team.
Pacers: Pacers are kind of stuck in the weird treadmill spot. Ackerman looks fine but he's definitely no Slick. This season though, Slick is making many PG's look 2nd rate.

The Fine Line Between Petty and Genius
2041 181 Nets Sign SG Eppa Rixey III for $126,000,000 over 6 years.
The amount of layers in this signing run deep. The Grizzlies had the Nets picks for back to back seasons. Rex was pretty adamant that they were going to be valuable, so, he didn't really want to move them. Fast forward to the Nets resetting and Marty wanted the picks back. Rex, obviously not wanting to move them, decided not to send them back. Fast forward a bit more, the Grizz start making moves towards winning and deal for Rixey. The Nets 40 1st is included in that deal, pretty much shutting the down on any chance of Marty getting that back. Eventually, the Grizzlies and Nets make a trade. Loy, who was a really solid PG at the time, for the Grizzlies 42. The Grizzlies have a solid backcourt now and just need to focus on making winning moves. They didn't finish the season with a top record but 43-39 was a reset and it was something to build around. Or so we thought. That offseason, with Loy and Rixey both expiring, the Grizzlies had to figure how to bring both back. Instead of securing both long term, the Grizzlies give Rixey a 1 yr deal and lose Loy. That season, the Grizzlies went 36-46. Next offseason, with Rixey testing again, the Grizzlies lose him to a massive offer. From who? Marty himself. Revenge is a dish best served through maxing out your nemesis' FA.
How It Has Effected The Season:
Grlzzlies: The Grizzlies went into panic mode and traded their remaining picks for what many would call role players. The current and future of the Grizzlies isn't looking super bright. They did have a positive sim just now but man, they need to figure things out soon. Forget about screwing their pick this year. Worry about resetting soon.
Nets: Rixey, while overpaid, was an ideal get for the Nets. They are entering their CY next year and need players like Rixey anyways. Improving their Grizzlies pick helps a lot as well, giving them a nice piece to move.
