Boston Celtics: B+
No idea why Charles continues to carry Jax on his roster and is signing him to deals where he’s very difficult to match, but nice offseason for the Celtics. Drafted a probable superstar in Horrace Walker and maintained their cap flexibility. The Barnett-Walker duo is awesome, but they’re very light on assets, so it could be a close call CY wise next season.
Miami Heat: C-
Kobe is on autopilot. Nice team but the contention window has passed and he doesn’t seem motivated to deal.
New Jersey Nets: C+
Gonna be a really close call. Nets don’t have the depth or rebounding to feel secure. Especially worried about their frontcourt’s rebounding. I don’t mind the WIllie Jones pick, but Marty should probably try to flip him for win-now pieces.
New York Knicks: A-
Always good to draft Oscar Robertson. Continues to frustrate to see the top of classes be this good when the classes are really weak on the whole. Knicks made a bunch of other deals. I think they picked up some picks?
Orlando Magic: B
Kept St. Cloud and Cleaves and will run it back. Right decision. Good team, but let’s improve that bench.
Philadelphia 76ers: C+
Where did everyone go? I like the Wilfong deal, but the roster is so thin, and the rest of Game’s signings haven’t helped much. Team is way too thin and doesn’t have a clear path to building around Bill. Javi is probably the best scorer on this roster.
Washington Wizards: A+
Fantastic second round selections.
Atlanta Hawks: C+
I can relate to going back and forth on whether to compete or rebuild, but it looks like DBW made moves in both directions and ended up in the middle. I think this team can compete for a playoff spot but not sure it gets there. The backcourt rebounding and lack of defense worry me. Don’t love Rochelle on a max either.
New Orleans Hornets: F
Not trying to pile on. Losing Baylor is dumb and unrealistic, but not maxing Naulls is just letting a significant asset walk. Major blunder. It can hurt to go from 68 to all-out tanking in a matter of days, but that’s the right decision. No point having Walton and Lovelette—go get value for them and bottom out. You don’t want to be tanking for Darrall Imhoff.
Chicago Bulls: A-
Game needed to target a guy like Wilfong, camp him, and hope he’s a good long-term option at PG, and I liked the move for him. Not knocking him when I say I loved it for Play. That’s a probable lotto (bearing in mind Mikan will decline or retire) for a backup. Think the Bulls ran it back otherwise, as they should’ve.
Cleveland Cavaliers: A
They signed Elgin Baylor. Thought the other moves were solid—bringing in Rocha for the Mavs pick was cool, Moreland is a nice prospect, and Cohen is good if overpaid—but yeah, what else can you say? We’re all happy to see Svedda’s luck turn.
Detroit Pistons: B
Let’s see how Moe sims, but I like the pick. Using cap on Rochelle was bad, but he’s gone, and there wasn’t much opportunity cost in this FA. I’m not sure about Hamilton at SF, but nice to have Smith, Hamilton, and Moe after one year of rebuilding. I want to knock Chip for thinking Mo King is an asset, but I can’t, because I’m still pretending Paul Neumann is one. Keep going.
Indiana Pacers: C
Another roster that seems to be getting incrementally worse with little direction. I didn’t mind the Wilcox pick. Probably just need to move Hitch for exp and Ackerman for a prospect and rebuild. They have the Grizz pick, which means if they tank they could be looking at two top five picks. Pretty nice opportunity.
Milwaukee Bucks: C+
Andy made decent moves to add depth, but it seems clear the KC-Pettit core is never going to get there. Not saying he should give up on it, because I’d be extremely reluctant to do that, but with AAF aging, just seems like they peaked two season ago.
Toronto Raptors: A-
I was kind of looking sideways at this rebuild because I didn’t see enough talent around Twyman and Krebs, but the Gola and Guy gambles are looking awesome. Not clear either guy is going to sim well, but I’d guess they will, and that’s a lot of value to drum up at very little cost. Raps look good.
