Draft Lotto Review
* these ratings reflect my opinion and mine only *
1 Phoenix Suns - John Havlicek SG 6'5'' 203 21 B B A- C+ C+ A
Grade: A+
If I had the first pick, this is the guy I would have taken. Havlicek looks the part scoring wise and has a nice rebounding grade. I’m worried about him passing too much, but it’s a minor issue at most. The Suns now have a franchise player to build around and could probably continue to tank with him or add talent and start winning. The decision is Andrews!
2 New York Knicks - Walt Bellamy C 6'11'' 225 22 B- C- C- B B+ A
Grade: N/A
For me, I was thrilled to jump to 2 and get a big in Bellamy to team with Oscar Robinson. A few GMs on the board said they would have gone with Kojis over Walt, but I’m not buying it. Bellamy should be similar to Wayne Embry, with a little less blocks maybe? I do expect his scoring and rebounding to be better. So maybe he is nothing like Embry. I’m just comparing him to Embry because it’s a guy I wanted for a while.
3 Boston Celtics- Don Kojis SF 6'5'' 215 22 B- B+ C- C+ C+ A
Grade: A-
I like this pick. He is borderline B A-, but Ray Scott might be the guy. A Scott/Walker front court might have been better? Who really knows. I really would have liked to see beastly trde this pick since, you know, he’s in his CY. This man has some work to do unless he wants Ahsan running the Celtics next season. Get to work.
4 Detroit Pistons (from Sonics)- Ray Scott PF 6'9'' 215 23 B C D+ B B A
Grade: A
Great pick. Looks like Ray Scott does it all. I would ensure that you pump some camps into his blocks before that first TC and hope they jump. Other than that, he looks like he’s on his way to a A- A- A- peak. Hopefully he sims as good as he looks, but based on his notes - he should. The Pistons added a nice piece to go with Smith and Moe.
5 Los Angeles Lakers- Don Nelson SF 6'6'' 210 21 B- C+ C- B C+ A
Grade: A
Good pick. Another guy who should eventually be a B+ A-/A scorer. He might end up better than Kojis when it’s all said and done. It would not shock me at all.
6 New Orleans Hornets- Johnny Egan PG 5'11'' 180 22 C B+ C+ C C- A
Grade: B-
I really hate to hate on this pick, but here we are. Don’t get me wrong, Egan is good. Anytime you see “elite” in the notes it’s nice. I just think these players at PG are dime a dozen. Would have loved to see Lums go with Bridges here.
7 Dallas Mavericks- Bill Bridges PF 6'6'' 228 22 C+ C C- B B+ B
Grade: B
It would get a higher grade if the GM actually made the pick, but it was an auto. Bridges looks like he will be a very very nice big in this league. Good inside, jump shot, handles, boards, solid stocks. Lot to like.
8 Indiana Pacers- Kevin Loughery SG 6'3'' 190 21 C+ B+ B+ C C- A
Grade: B
Solid as fuck. Good scorer. Won’t do much else. High handle rating, might pass too much. Could have done a lot worse at this point in the draft.
9 New York Knicks (from Pistons via SEA)- Bevo Nordmann C 6'10'' 225 22 C D+ C- B+ B B
Grade: N/A
Was thrilled to see this man on the board so I had to trade up from 13. Not much else to say. At worst, a great 3rd big.
10 Washington Wizards- Tom Meschery SF 6'6'' 215 23 C+ C+ C- B C+ A
Grade: A-
Jah is good at drafting. He’s not good at drafting on time, but he hits on his picks and I trust this is the right guy for the Wiz. Tom looks like a well rounded wing and should be the next guy to sit in Washington for 15 seasons.
11 Portland Trail Blazers- Jack Turner SG 6'5'' 200 22 C+ B+ C- B- C B
Grade: B
Only question appears to be his handles. If those can be corrected with camps, Don might have himself a steal here at 11. If not, he might just be a high volume scoring guard with high turnovers, making him a not so valuable piece.
12 Indiana Pacers (from Grizz)- Tony Jackson SF 6'4'' 200 19 C+ B- C C C A
The youngest player in this draft at 19 goes to the Pacers. Jackson is RAW. Good shooter and handles and has upside. Good high risk pick here.
13 Seattle Sonics (from Hawks via NYK)- Chris Smith C 6'6'' 225 22 C+ C+ C- C+ C+ A
Grade: D+
I don’t see how you trade down from 4 twice and end up with a straight C+ player and you have no studs on your roster. I know I traded with the Sonics, but eh. He’s basically a blank canvas with average ratings and high upside. I hope it works out and he blows up in TC.
