2003 Contract Year - The Candidates
**Disclaimer - don't get offended guys, it's all in good humor**
WHO WILL BE GONE?
WHO WILL BE GONE?
Let's start by saying this is not a list you want to be on, at all. This list is comprised of the some of the FBB universes best General Managers at building below average teams. Nah, jk. Some of these guys I've seen build really good teams in the past. Some have had some extreme bad luck, some have made some bonehead moves, and some are just boneheads. Let's dive in before everyone gets butthurt...
Atlanta Hawks
GM: Losanglife
Atlanta Hawks Record from 2001-2003: 85-161 (.346)
Where it all started: Let's flash back all the way to the creation draft. The Atlanta Hawks picked a young point named Steve Francis. When the Hawks selected Francis with the 19th pick in the first round of the creation draft, they believed that they had their franchise player. Francis was an exciting scoring point in real life, so why would he not be the same here in BBS? I won't hate on the pick all that much. The pool of point guards was slim pickings from the get-go and the Hawks nabbed one of the best young ones in the file (or so we thought).
How they got here: In a league with post happy maniacs, 784 posts wont get the job done unfortunately. You need to improve your players with RCs and write articles, and the Hawks GM has failed to do so. Had his young players like Steve Francis and DeMar Johnson been camped, he may not be in this position. Alternatively, another way to improve your roster is my trading. I'm not suggesting trading like Skillz or @aaronjh , but you need to make some moves to improve your team. Francis was rotting away as his turnovers continued to stay around 3.9 per game. That won't cut it. In hindsight, the Hawks should have dealt Francis, or moved him to SG and camped his scoring. The selected Samuel Dalembert who looks decent, but again, he needs to be maxed camped. The Mike Dunleavey pick last season looks awful. In a desperation move, they finally made a deal, but traded their 2003 1st round pick to the aforementioned @aaronjh in a deal for sharpshooting, Ray Allen. It was a risky move, that unfortunately, did not pay off really. The 4th pick turned out to be Carmel Anthony, who looks unbelievable. Even if he decided to deal Carmelo after the draft, he likely could have seen a much higher return.
Will they survive: I'll put this bluntly. They are in trouble. The good news? The East kind of sucks. With one or two additions to Ray Allen, the team could be saved. If they sit on the roster as constructed now, they will be long gone and a new sherif will be in town next season. Hate to see it, because Losanglife seems like a good dude. But hey, at least he'll have more time to enjoy the beaches in Cali.
Orlando Magic
GM: Who is the GM here, is it footy or breakthewalls .. the world may never know
Orlando Magic Record from 2001-2003: 87-159 (.354)
Where it all started: The Magic have had a crazy ride. They drafted Antoine Walker, which turned out to be a good pick. It seems like they traded the majority of their other creation picks for futures, which did not amount to much other than....Eddie Griffin, who we will talk about very shortly..
How they got here: In 2001, the drafted an absolute steal in Eddie Griffin at the 2nd of the 1st round. They did trade Joe Johnson, Antoine Walker, and Amare Stoudemire to the Kings for Kobe Bryant. That move set the Kings up nicely for years to come. How could any team acquiring Kobe lose the trade? Well, the Magic did. They had nothing around Kobe, as the roster was absolutely depleted. In an effort to acquire a "Pippen" to Kobe (MJ), the Magic traded youngster Eddie Griffin to the Indiana Pacers for Rashard Lewis. Lewis would go on to have a meh training camp, and Griffin would explode with camps and training camp, becoming a 13RPG 3BPG big man at 21 years old. I can't fault the Magic for this move for a multitude of reasons. (1) I got Griffin from him, (2) Who knew Lewis would fail to improve and Griffin would explode like he did? No one. This off-season, the Magic made a big move acquiring Marcus Camby from the Utah Jazz. Camby is very good and is what the team lacks right now, a defensive and rebounding presence. The problem? He's making a lot of money. But that is either going to be a problem down the road, or for another GM.
Will they survive: Yes. The trade for Marcus Camby was not good value, but it should be enough with Kobe Bryant, Rashard Lewis, and Jim Mac to get them to .500 and into the play-offs. If not, what happens here Spencer ? Are both GM's canned, or does break take the fall and footy gets a team?
Seattle Supersonics
GM: 13rock
Seattle Supersonics Record from 2001-2003: 102-144 (.415)
Where it all began: Jesus, where do I begin. Paul Pierce was their first creation pick. I won't hate on that pick much, but he needed to gather some ACs and pump them into Pierce to take him to the next level. I know he got his RCs and one free weight from AC, but he could have used that additional +10 off the rip. Oh well. Their next pick, Tim Thomas is still available in D4/5 of free agency. What does that tell you? In season one, multiple GMs made strong attempts to land Thomas, but they fell short due to multiple reasons. My squad made a run at Thomas, but after 4 pages of chatting and getting nowhere, I gave up. Andre miller was a decent pick at best, but the rest of his creation draft sucked.
How they got here: In the 2001 draft, he passed on Tony Parker for Tyson Chandler. That is a killer. Big time killer. Chandler would eventually be dealt off to the Suns and the Sonics would acquire Shaquille O'Neal! So, acquiring the "cheat code" Shaq should automatically get you to reset your CY. Think again. He failed to do anything else to improve his team. I will give him some credit here though. This off-season, he's made some shrewd Free Agent signings. Jason terry is a nice piece (PLEASE CAMP HIM 13rock ). I like the Mo Williams pick. Sprewell is an ok guy for 1 year deal. Eddy Curry is a cute piece, but won't help him win much. They do have the best overall record of these three teams if that makes the Sonics and their fans feel any better about all of this.
Will they survive: He has a shot. I'l say yes. If I'm ranking these three in likelihood **BASED OFF CURRENT ROSTERS**, I'll say Orlando has the best chance to reset, followed by the Sonics, then the Hawks. 2 of the 3 of these GMs don't write articles and it hammers home the importances of writing to improve your squad with ACs.
