That's me throwing up the H for H-Town.
That's me throwing up the H for H-Town.
Hello and welcome to Ahsan's Opinions. I'm your host, Ahsan (picture above). My new segment where I just give my opinions on things going on around the league. If I get a 5, I will do more of these! So vote 5!!!!
Nice! (sorted by total dollar amount)
2003 181 Trail Blazers Sign C Alonzo Mourning for $161,700,000 over 7 years. - He is amazing and will probably continue to be good for a few seasons. He should regress but he is so good now that with regression, he would be worth top dollar. And I doubt it ever becomes a bad contract because he likely retires after 4-5 seasons which is around the time he should see the massive drop off.2003 181 Lakers Sign PG Jason Kidd for $138,600,000 over 7 years. - Kidd is 30 but amazing. This contract may look ugly after 4-5 seasons but he looks to be in his prime so expecting his ratings/production to stay where it is for a couple of years before slowly starting to regress. There is so much randomness in training camp though and even tougher for players on the other side of 30 but I don't really see enough to tell me that Kidd is going to die soon.
2003 181 Celtics Sign PF Rasheed Wallace for $138,600,000 over 7 years. - While he does have his flaws, he is very much a legit starter and I still think he is improving at age 29. If he can work on his rebounding and handles a bit over the next couple of seasons, that would be great. Then spend like 3-4 on this contract in his prime staying near the same or slowly regress and then by the time he starts to regress sharply, will be a massive expiring or short-term deal that's not difficult to get rid of as trade fodder.
2003 181 Spurs Sign PG Jamal Crawford for $115,500,000 over 7 years. - I love him, he's amazing. This is nice. Just the type of PG you dream of in FBB. High scoring, low passing, great handles, solid rebounding. It's perfection for the outside offense. Him and T-Mac look like a very dynamic duo and should be interesting to see what John continues to put around them.
2003 181 Grizzlies Sign PG Andre Miller for $115,500,000 over 7 years. - I know this one is controversial but Miller is very much a legitimate starting point guard. And at only age 24, he is nowhere near his prime. In a league where point guard is considered shallow, Miller will be very valuable. I think this is awesome.
2003 181 Bulls Sign PF Jerome Moiso for $109,100,000 over 7 years. - I gave up assets for this so obviously I love it. Infact, I am actually writing this article for him right now! For real though, he is nice at age 25 and I feel like (and hoping) that he is still improving. It's a massive contract but he looks like the type of player who can live up to it.
2003 181 Jazz Sign PF Marcus Camby for $108,000,000 over 6 years. - Already been flipped for assets which look nice and that I felt was cheap for Camby. I love that the Magic were able to get him alongside Kobe/Shard in their CY. If Barbosa has good handles, they'll make it with ease. If he doesn't, they need to make a move for a point guard. Regardless, feel like this deal saved them in the league.
2003 181 Jazz Sign SG Michael Finley for $108,000,000 over 6 years. - I'll be honest, I don't love this contract as I feel like it could look potentially ugly after 3 seasons. Not sure how far into his prime he is but this is obviously his market value. Mainly put it under Nice because he has been flipped for assets twice already so clearly his value is solid.
2003 181 Magic Sign SF Rashard Lewis for $94,500,000 over 6 years. - I mean they are in CY so they couldn't really lose him after striking out on the maxes above.
2003 181 Knicks Sign SG Stephen Jackson for $90,000,000 over 6 years. - I am likely in the minority here but I like it. At first, I didn't like it but after really looking at Jackson, I see it. Let's be real, Jackson won't be a Knick for too long. He is young, has camps. I'm sure he'll get better than he is at a level which is pretty good and Skillz will flip him for something really good.
2003 181 Nuggets Sign SG Eddie Jones for $54,945,900 over 5 years. - He has his flaws but this is a good price. The Nuggets gutted their entire roster and don't have a pick so need to add whatever they can possibly add. I feel like Carmelo is best at SG due to the lack of defense and importance of frontcourt defense and Jones is not really suited for SF due to the lack of rebounding but if he can flip Jones for a solid starter elsewhere, that would be cool.
2003 181 Heat Sign C P.J. Brown for $50,048,080 over 4 years. - I like the value. It isn't expensive, isn't long term and he's a very solid player. He has proven to be a terrific defensive anchor and solid rebounder. Isn't much of a scorer but does enough there to be a dependable rotational player. Even if he declines throughout this contract, he should still be good enough to be a solid starter throughout at least the first 3 years and then becomes an expiring during the final year. I think it's very good value for him.
2003 181 Clippers Sign C Michael Olowokandi for $46,933,201 over 6 years. - The new Clippers GM frangie was unhappy with how the previous guy (even though he worked with the previous guy) gave away Jahidi White. And he is completely right to be. Obviously, Olowokandi is nowhere near White but they had a massive void to fill for a bigman alongside Duncan with White gone. Kandiman blocks a bit, boards a bit and looks solid enough to be a starter or key rotational big. At between $7M-$8M per year on average, it's good for a player like that.
2003 181 Super Sonics Sign PG Jason Terry for $40,000,000 over 5 years. - They lost Jason Williams but Terry can take some of the pain away. It's not just Terry on here, I have all the Supersonics signings on here because I like what they did for this CY and really hope they make it. They needed to add talent and they got a bunch of players on very affordable contracts. Upgraded their wings, still need a rebounding/defensive big or two but they have players they can flip (either for a big or for a pick or two that can net them a big)
2003 181 Timberwolves Sign PF Zydrunas Ilgauskas for $39,600,000 over 3 years. - This was probably the best signing of them all. I've never seen a player be offered a 7-year maximum contract, multiple 6-year maximum contracts and take the 3-year max. Maybe his agent told him to take the short term deal and nab another long-term deal after 3 years? Not sure but this was amazing value for Minnesota, an absolute steal. Their roster is far from competing so I expect them to flip Z and get a good return out of it to help their rebuild. It's funny because everybody knew that Z was getting max offers and there was a lot of debate as to whether or not he was worth it and how ugly a long-term deal would look for him. Now he took a short-term deal and looks like an absolute bargain giving him awesome overall value.
2003 181 Grizzlies Sign SF Joe Smith for $32,210,938 over 3 years. - He's rock solid and this is pretty cheap. He's a terrific small forward in the prime of his career on a very nice contract.
2003 181 Hawks Sign PG Damon Jones for $26,480,000 over 3 years. - I've always liked Damon. Great shooter with some volume, solid handles. I think he would be good in the backcourt with Ray Allen in an outside offense. Don't feel like this is enough for Atlanta to make their CY but I really hope they do find ways to add players and get there.
2003 181 Mavericks Sign PF Dale Davis for $16,800,000 over one year. - Massive expiring for a guy who has proven to be a reliable starting big. Great rebounder, can anchor a defense. What's there to say really? This is a great deal.
2003 182 Super Sonics Sign SG Gordan Giricek for $15,000,000 over 3 years. - Another Supersonics signing. Feel like I talked about their signings as a whole above under Jason Terry.
2003 182 Super Sonics Sign SF Bonzi Wells for $15,000,000 over 3 years. - See Terry above.
2003 182 Knicks Sign SF Robert Horry for $13,579,200 over 2 years. - I never though much of him due to his lack of scoring but that improved last season to a point where he could be dependable enough in a rotation. He's clearly an above-average player due to his terrific defense, solid rebounding and solid handles so he gets paid the above-average salary he deserves. Only on a 2-year tract too which is awesome.
2003 183 Magic Sign C Jim McIlvaine for $12,300,000 over 2 years. - Needs to work on his rebounding but overall, he is a very solid startable big man and this is a nice price.
2003 182 Magic Sign C Rasho Nesterovic for $12,000,000 over one year. - It's only on here because it was the filler in the Camby deal. Feel like he should have tried to sign other guys and then sign the filler on days 4/5 to do the trade after TC but I guess he wanted it officially done earlier. I feel like Camby was an amazing addition so this is on the love list.
2003 182 Warriors Sign PG Jason Williams for $12,000,000 over one year. - A very under the radar type of player, he is a solid starter in this league. The one-year max is cool because they can try him, evaluate him and then figure out whether to give him a longer-term deal. Because of the 105% rule, they will be able to offer him any contract possible. Though with the Warriors clearly tanking, feel like they'll send him packing elsewhere and that will be figured out in his new home.
2003 181 Cavaliers Sign SF Scottie Pippen for $8,200,000 over one year. - Solid starter at a cheap price.
2003 181 Rockets Sign PF Bo Outlaw for $8,000,000 over one year. - Call me biased but I feel like this is cheap for a player once traded for a lottery pick. And by once, I mean like last week. I'm pretty happy with this signing.
2003 182 Super Sonics Sign SG Latrell Sprewell for $7,107,596 over one year. - Another Supersonics signing, I think he's a big upgrade from Bryon Russell. He has his flaws and is mocked constantly as he doesn't play up to his ratings but he isn't a complete bum. He's a solid rotational piece and this is great price. They can keep him or flip him for something nice due to the pretty ratings.
Bad! (sorted by total dollar amount)
2003 181 76ers Sign PG Steve Francis for $90,000,000 over 6 years. - Never really been a fan of him here because the turnovers are too high for a guy who's overall production does not justify it. If he was dropping over 25 PPG as a PG on a tanking team, I'd think he is solid but doing 18.6 PPG last year (and a high of 22.7 PPG for his career) is good enough as a scorer. B- inside for a guy who is great dunker does not look great to me. And I know people say move him to SG and the turnovers will go down but while the turnovers go down, so do the points. Not the type of SG I like. Maybe he will prove me wrong, he is young. But meh.
2003 181 Nets Sign SF Mike Miller for $78,265,364 over 7 years. - Yeah he's young and he can shoot/score at a decent clip but doesn't really do much else. Did not expect him to get this much money. Feel like this is a massive overpay. I don't hate the starting salary but the increases are sharp making it expensive overall, just not liking the full 7 years here.
2003 181 Pistons Sign SF Ron Artest for $59,402,228 over 5 years. - He rebounds fine and handles great but there's nothing else that he does really well. He's young so that's cool but over $11.8M per year on average? I don't like this.
2003 182 Pacers Sign SF DerMarr Johnson for $54,415,303 over 6 years. - This one is just a massive HUH?! That was my reaction when I saw the contract. I honestly just don't get it. Not sure what Sargo sees, feels more like signing just for sake of signing somebody, I really don't get it..
2003 181 Grizzlies Sign PG Stephon Marbury for $47,520,000 over 3 years. - I thought about acquiring Starbury last season to be my tanking point guard as a joke. I put Francis as a bad contract but this is worse because at least Francis can rebound/steal and has some scoring volume. Not sure what Marbury brings to the table at all. Perhaps he'll prove me wrong. At least it's only a 3-year deal so will be a massive expiring after 2 seasons so that's cool I guess? I don't know, I really don't know.
I really don't give a flying f! (unsorted)
2003 181 Wizards Sign C Antonio McDyess for $30,240,000 over 2 years.
2003 181 Wizards Sign PF Danny Fortson for $5,000,000 over one year.2003 181 Hornets Sign PG Terrell Brandon for $9,000,000 over one year.
