The CY’d Roundtable
Today we have the GMs from Memphis, LA Clippers, Minnesota and Portland stop by and talk shop about the chopping block. Let's thank all four of them for joining us today, and sharing their wisdom!
Were you surprised JAH got CY’d?
Skillz Surprised, only because we have seen this movie before and JAH had always survived. No one has ever been better at winning exactly 42-games, so I was surprised to see JAH fail. Sad! I love Jah.
greeme In general I'm surprised that anybody gets cyd. It is a mixture of bad planning and bad luck. Jah's problem was that he was competing with 2 more cy teams in the east and 5 overall and there was no uber-stud in the draft like bill, wilt or elgin to entice people to tank. Jah is a solid gm but not the most pro-active which is usually not a big deal but when you miss out on free players in your cy that obviously doesn't help. I'm sure he will be back though.
hf Nah, he didn’t make any moves to improve. I guess he didn’t wanna leave a mess for the new gm so I respect it. I will miss Jah though
Orlando Magic Johnson YES! I was very surprised that Jah got CY'd. Now, we all know Jah. Or maybe we kinda don't? But nevertheless, he's been in sim leagues forever. He is quiet but always has a presence. While he likes to hold onto his players and rarely make big moves or any moves at all for that matter, I thought he would be a guy doing whatever it takes to stay in the league. He is one of the last few GM's that started off in this version and stayed with the same team. I think there are only a few of us left! Anyway, I will miss him...BUT I'm sure he will return.
How about Matt in Seattle? What went wrong here, I swear he was walking on the edge of a dynasty a couple seasons ago
Skillz Everything went wrong. He lost every deal, wasn't proactive enough and seemed to think he knew more than everyone else. He currently owns the worst W/L record in BBS history and it wasn't like he was dealt a bad hand.
greeme It wasn't his dynasty though if I remember correctly. He wanted to make the team his own which I understand but didn't do a very good job. He also wasn't good enough in yr 3 and should have waited until yr 4 to compete. If he did then I think he would have made it.
hf He blew it up for no reason, and then he traded down from his top 5 pick and got literally no value for it. Dude just made the randomest trades and was a loose cannon on whether you get a reply to a PM or not.
Orlando Magic Johnson Matt!! We hardly knew ya! Damn, here one minute and gone the next. Not a sound in the night. Not even a...Poor Matt. Had a dynasty in the making and decided to tear it all down and then was CY'd. So sad. Matt was unique. Some say he was in 20 leagues and if that's the case it's impressive that he was still somewhat active here. I'm surprised he got knocked off tbh because his team wasn't that bad. He never posted though. Never posted in the sim thread. Never really did much lol. Odd tenure lol.
Do the Hawks make it this year? How amazing has DBW this offseason?
Skillz Yes. Not only will they make it, but will likely win 50+ games. DBW is a great GM so i'm surprised he is even in his CY.
greeme Yup but unless he has trades which aren't posted he is far from a lock. I love sam and lucas but the rest of his bigs are backups at best. Houbregs and groat are solid starters. Not a ton of good depth. Hope sam plays more than 62 games.
hf Hawks name it easily. Love their moves for this year and they should win 50+
Orlando Magic Johnson Yeah, Hawks should definitely make it this year. Between Groat-Jones-Lucas I don't see why not. They have the scoring and should have the defense. Depth looks nice as well. I think they definitely make it. DBW had a great offseason best trade was picking up Sam Jones. Amazing player.
Is Lums in good shape and do the Hornets reset?
Skillz Good shape? No. Will they reset? Probably. I think Lums has enough people in his corner, too. He has talent at the Wings. Team is pretty ugly, though.
greeme No, they are currently the 9th or 10th best team out east. That said they should be able to move picks and move up a few spots relatively easily. The question is if he will. Play could help him by nuking the pacers or by deciding to rebuild.
hf Lums made enough moves to keep the hornets imo. Might need a rebuild again soon after but we’ll cross that road when we get there. He’s safe
Orlando Magic Johnson Lums and the Hornets should be fine. No idea what type of team he will have or how many wins but I definitely think it's enough for 42. Egan is a player I didn't like as his PG last year but he puts up solid numbers. Went up to A+ outside which is nice. Ramsey/Hagan at the 2/3 is very nice scoring punch. He has rebounding and big men. Should have enough depth. I don't see why he won't get 42.
With Slick and Dukes’ mayo does DB reset easily?
Skillz Easily? I don't think so. The team is still bad. Dan is proactive and always does a great job in his CY so i am sure he'll win 45-48 and eventually clear the hurdle. Won't be shocked if they start poorly though.
greeme He had a big tc. I think he rests but not easily. West is pretty tough
hf I think Portland has an easy path to resetting. Adding Dukes should be enough, sucks that slick went down but he still should be good.
Orlando Magic Johnson While Slick took an offensive hit, I think the improvements to Turner and Walker along with adding Dukes and Ollie should give me enough offensive punch. I think the starting lineup is actually surprisingly very good and a very good defensive one at that. Should get plenty of Stocks. The one thing I'm a bit worried about is my depth. But otherwise, 1-5 I think it's good enough to hit 42 wins. I should be ok.
Editors note... I know Dan will make it!
The Dallas GM sucks but seems to have some good youth mixed with some decent vets, is it enough, or can we say goodbye to him again?
Skillz Having a good "mix" of youth and vets isn't necessarily the goal during your CY. The team looks like a 35 win team right now, so he's definitely going to need to make moves to clear the bar. He has the assets to improve.
greeme No. That said he can move happy and picks and at least give himself a fighting chance. Sadly, I feel like he will wait too long and get cyd
hf Hopefully he ends up top 5 pick with 42 wins.
Orlando Magic Johnson The only thing I question with Dallas is if they have enough scoring. I'm not entirely sure they do. Hot Rod and Terry are nice but after that where do they go. They have a lot of nice complimentary pieces and seems like to me some good depth which is important. Not sure they have #1 option though. Hot Rod is going to carry the load. Hopefully he's up for the task!
We have two new retreads for GMs which one gets CY’d first, and will it be in < 6 seasons?
Skillz Until Break doesn't screw up, the answer is him - right? I thought it was impossible to get CYd more than once, and I was wrong!
greeme Break, not happy about it but he really doesn't seem to learn quickly and/or at all.
hf The default answer is break will be CYd which i hope isn’t the caseZ
Orlando Magic Johnson Hard to believe either one will be CY'd. One has WILT and is never going to trade him unless for a fucking around purpose. The other can build solid teams so I don't expect them to be CY'd at all or anytime soon for that matter.
Editors note... Think Orlando Magic Johnson missed that the two "new" ones are Break and JR
I’ve made a few friends here that I didn’t know before joining, is there anyone you have met for the first time in the league that you wanna give a shout out to for being a person you’d like to have a beer with?
Skillz I'm giving a shout to Ashes!
greeme Definitely Aar. Plenty of other gms also but he sticks out.
hf Nah I really don’t like you guys so stay away from me weirdos.
Orlando Magic Johnson Ahsan and Stevie B. Don't think I knew them really before from sim leagues. So this league might have been the first? Anyway, Let's have a drink lads! I need a cold one right now. Get meeee outttaaaa hereeeeee.
Editors note... I'm having a cold beer right now
