1. Heat are in their CY! Do they make it? It's still early but what % chance of making their CY do you give them? Any advice on what kind of moves you would make?
ashes - I mean if the Blazers, Mavs, and Hornets made it through last season, I don't see why the Heat can't. And if the rookie duo play doesn't work they can easily get good players with them. Should be a lock situation one way or another.
Brophdog88 - Yeah they make it, too many high end assets not to in the Bob/Willis. Even if things start sour they should be able to upgrade and get enough with one of them.
the original michael - Yes, they make it. They should have enough talent to be a 6-8 seed at worst. If not, they will deal off Bob Love or Willis Reed. Easily make it.
autumn harold - They’ll reset because they’ll have no problem improving in trades if it comes to that, but based on the current roster, I’d still say they’re a near lock. The non-playoff teams in the East are abysmal—as bad as some of the worst years the West has had—and the Pacers and possibly Knicks and Bulls just joined the fold. It’s incredibly easy to get 42 in the East, so this shouldn’t be a close call.
2. Best FA we've seen in a long time. Give me your strategy for this FA and answer these questions for me please:
Al Attles worth a max or not?
How much is Darrall Imhoff worth?
ashes - Uh, my strategy is to max max max lol, duh. Doubt anyone leaves, much less signs with me, but here's hoping! Al Attles might be worth a day 2/3 max? If you're desperate enough, I guess. No shot anyone other than the Lakers offers anything more than an MLE Day 1 right? Imhoff is worth a solid MLE.
Brophdog88 - Since Im sending this after FA, my strategy was clear, Max Lenny, I didnt have cap for anything else. He came back, so that worked
For Attles, I would give him a max if I had him, not if I was trying to sign him away. If I signed him to a max as the team that owns him, Id be shopping him post signing, I like him as a PG, but at a max its excessive for somebody that limited from three. He does everything else well though.
Imhoff went for 11 million a year. But Honestly, I woulda tried to snag him just over MLE, without rebounding he is a backup big. The two year deal like that is pretty low risk though.
the original michael - Wanted to bring back Oscar obviously. I only bud on him and Jerry West. It hurts but whatever. Fuck FBB. I would say that Attles is not worth a max. Nora. Fan of PGs that can’t shoot. Pass on that. As for Imhoff, he got what? 11M? Overpaid.
autumn harold - It’s a deep class and the team with max cap will rightly focus on the studs, so I’m going to aim high with my MLE. (Wrote this before Day 1.) Attles isn’t close to max worthy, Imhoff isn’t worth an MLE.
3. Huge trade between the Grizzlies and Heat. Grizzlies send the #1 overall pick in this draft, Willis Reed, for McCoy McLemore and a future. Thoughts on this trade for both sides? Do you like Reed or McLemore more and why?
ashes - I kind of dislike it for both sides. I think if Heat aren't in CY, it's pretty good, but I'm a little worried Heat might need some extra juice and trade him anyway. Probably not though, he's going to be sick. As for the Grizzlies, McCoy Jianlian looks pretty good. If he takes another step in TC, then yeah, beast. If he regresses, bail bail bail. Probably works out for both, McCoy won't be a Grizzly by the end of the season though, and he'll probably be traded for a max contract Darrall Imhoff or something, so I guess the Heat win by default.
Brophdog88 - meh, I enjoy elite bigs, but McCoy looks amazing, hard to say. An Elite all around big though is more valuable, so its seems pretty fair. Im torn, I woulda likely held the piece I had if I was involved, not made the deal from either side...but I woulda been more likely to take Kobe's side of it since elite big.
the original michael - It’s not bad for both. I do like McLemore more here because of the lack of wings. Buttttt I’m also a huge Reed fan because of the KNIIIIICKS. But mclemore is more valuable.
autumn harold - I’m good with it for both but I prefer it for the Grizz. I would definitely prefer to have the DD/Twyman style wing to build around, and McCoy is that. I love Willis but we’ve seen a lot of those bigs enter recently, and I don’t see them being the kind of difference maker that a 30/10 SF is.
4. This draft was really deep but not strong at the top so I'd imagine everyone's list looked pretty different. In order, rank your top 5 players in this draft(after Willis)
ashes - After Willis? I really just have this feeling deep down in my jellies that Hazzard will blow up and be the best. Not sure why, just seems like it's going to happen. So hot take here, but 1) Hazzard 2) Love 3) Mullins 4) Murrell 5) Sloan. Don't @ me on #5, smd!
Brophdog88 - After Willis? Love, Hazzard, Silas (he has 100 potential), Mullins, Jim Barnes. Its tough, I dont mind the risk Play took at 6, though I think there were better players the all around upside is good there. Barnes is a safe defensive big, so I probably take him as I am risk averse that early.
the original michael -
1. Bob love
2. Hazzard
3. Barnes
4. Mullins
5. Govan
super high on these guys. All can be great!
autumn harold - Habes:1) Love 2) Silas 3) Hazzard 4) Mullins 5) Barnes. Love looks like Bailey to me. Rest of these guys are mid-lotto types. Really deep class but thin at the top.
5. Give me your top 5 players based on current trade value.
ashes - Shit I don't pay enough attention yet to care about this. Wilt is kind of untradeable, so is he #1? Let's go with 1) Big O 2) West 3) Baylor 4) Havlicek 5) Thurmond. Yeah, why not.
Brophdog88 - Oscar, Havlicek, West, Russell, Baylor
Yeah, I still want Russell over Baylor, both the same age, same deal, but Russell is just so damned amazing, all around, does everything Im honestly not sure Wilt would end up in my top 10 at this point, the stip has proven killer. Its a challenge that I wouldnt mind, but the cost cant be too high.
the original michael -
1. Oscar
2. Havlicek
3. West
4. Wilt
5. Baylor
This is painful to type out. Huge fan of Hav though. What a player! I tried to get him many times.
autumn harold - 1) Oscar Robertson 2) Bill Russell 3) Wilt Chamberlain 4) John Havlicek 5) McCoy McLemore. That was tough. Feel like the top three are obvious, though they were tough to sort. Lots of guys in play for 4 and 5; don’t feel strongly that these guys are more valuable than a handful of other guys, but they get the nod for their combination of youth and production.
6. Where do you stand on Jon McGlocklin? Good player or not?
ashes - Nah. I'll say no until a player like that works. If it's a player that Ahsan would like, I'm gonna pass.
Brophdog88 - I think he CAN be a good player, but, without potential, I feel like we see quite a few of these types. He should be decent enough on D, but not a plus rebounder yet, no three point, just a nice scoring SG. I enjoy the player type, and would probably value him more than most, but if we are assuming the potential on the scouted, ehh, not really gonna light the world on fire.
the original michael - He’ll be a good player in GS. He is made for an inside offense. He needs camps for sure. Not sure he’ll get them all with Royal and John, but the inside offense is the only place for him. I see him as a solid starter at worst.
autumn harold - I just think he’s capped around 22 PPG and won’t be all that efficient without threes. He’s going to look nice in Golden State, but that’s a unique spot. Most of these guys without threes are just role players, and I’m burned out on them. I don’t think he ever gets to B outside shooting, and it’s not like he’s a stocks/rebounding machine, so zero interest in him.
7. Which player(s) that aren't on your team are you most excited to see in TC?
ashes - I don't give a shit about anyone else's players! Fuck 'em! My TC is big news, that's all I need. Maybe the TWolves too out of love.
Brophdog88 - Hey, Bud hasnt made his way to my team yet, so him. But really, I wanna see if any of these bigs out there, the Lucas/Thurmond/Reed/Bellamy bigs can round out the offensive part of their game. All are a bit off on the jump shot of what you would really want, but also pretty well still elite. Just that limiting factor holding them back as a Dukes instead of a Russell.
the original michael - I can care less about anyone else if I’m being honest. Overall league excitement is at an all time low for me. Not going to lie.
autumn harold - I really like Don Nelson and think he could be elite with one more good TC, so him. Also curious about Wali Jones, Paul Silas, Jeff Mullins, and Jerry Sloan.
8. CC has stepped down as the Nuggets GM. We've seen a lot of GMs talking about their struggles with mental health lately and I am definitely one of them. I think anxiety/depression effects us all at some level. Any good advice for dealing with day to day mental health issues? Any of you in therapy currently?
ashes - Ah. Well I truly sympathize with everyone struggling with these issues. Found out recently about an old friend that took his life while I was away in the Navy and I had no idea. Another friend struggles daily with it and it scares the shit out of me. I've gone through a lot and continue to do so, and I do my best to get through it. It's not good advice, and any other thing that helps me isn't for everyone. I know everyone deals with stress and depression differently. All I can say is I promise there are people that care about you and want to help. Even if it doesn't seem like it, even if you feel overwhelmed. Reach out to someone. Family, friends, or even someone you don't know but specializes in helping people in these situations. Call someone. Just talk about anything. Connect. Taking breaks when you feel overwhelmed is important. Love y'all.
Brophdog88 - I went through a lotta shit 10 years ago, and really that stuff was part of why I stepped away initially, I was spending too much time on this when I needed to keep the focus on my future, this was too much of an escape. Im in a way better place years later thankfully, though depression/anxiety is always there, I have a better sense of purpose than I did years ago and have a stable career. Not everybody gets the opportunities I did though to reset, and it makes things rough. I wish I could tell you how things can be better, but really, there is no magic solution for any of us, therapy, talking helps, but even then, it can be a struggle. Finding people you can lean on is the biggest help you can get.
the original michael - yah, sorry to hear that. I have no advice because I’ve never dealt with it and can’t imagine what he and others are going through. It has to be awful. Im not in therapy, but believe it’s a great tool and feel like everyone can use it even if you’re not having issues!
autumn harold - Have you tried spending 16 hours a day on BBS?
9. Are Raptors the clear favorite again next season or can someone dethrone them? Way too early finals predictions please.
ashes - Yeah probably. This will probably be the last season with their current core all together, but the team is very complete overall. I'd say a Raptors/Wolves rematch if West re-signs, if not, maybe Raptors/Suns.
Brophdog88 - If he doesnt blow it up, of course. Twyman Guy and Krebs is a pretty darned perfect three, and Wilkinson is no slouch either, rebounds, steals, shoots efficiently (so proud). They can use what they have to fill in the depth and still have Stauffer to cover backup 4/5 in old age or maybe start I see no reason it wont be Wolves Raps round three, except that Oscar guy moved to the spurs, maybe ashes pushes now.
the original michael - I don’t see why not. They kept their big 3 together. Pretty sick team! Good job!
autumn harold - Clear favorite. Bulls are out of the picture. Don’t really think other East teams can hang with them. In the West, Wolves made a sick addition in Lee but don’t have a frontcourt, so it’s Raps and then everyone else for me.
ashes - I mean if the Blazers, Mavs, and Hornets made it through last season, I don't see why the Heat can't. And if the rookie duo play doesn't work they can easily get good players with them. Should be a lock situation one way or another.
