2046 FA Day 1 Winners & Losers

Big O lands in the Alamo
Analysis – After spending his rookie contract with the Knicks, Robertson decided to take his talents to San Antonio under GM ashes. He’ll join a deep roster of young talent including last year’s No. 1 pick Nate Thurmond along with big man Bob Boozer, sharp shooter Kevin Loughery and lotto picks Bob Weiss and Jerry Sloan. The Spurs should the next BBS dynasty if all the pieces fall into place. This team is deep and most of its core is locked up for the next 3 years at least.
Wolves keep The Logo
Analysis – Somewhere in the Minnesota front office, GM Eddy was pacing anxiously to see if his star PG Jerry West would be signing an extension. There were reports they were ready to go without him as the Wolves had a busy draft in trading Wayne Yates for No. 4 pick Jeff Mullins then flipping him for stud guard Lyndon Lee. The Wolves are elated though to have Jerry back officially but now their road to a Midwest title gets tougher with the Spurs bringing in Oscar.
Mavs steal Buzz from Chi-town
Analysis – Sources within the Bulls organization indicate GM play was initially pretty furious after losing Buzz. After finding Bennett outside of the Wizards rotation, the Bulls made him into a superstar small forward in a matter of 4 seasons. Play pumped +20 potential into Buzz’s veins coupled with being a steal already – made him into the max worthy player he is. The Bulls must have been on the fence about offering a full 2nd max to Buzz but he didn’t waste anytime taking the Mavs 6 year deal of $126M. Assuming Brian can turn Buzz into 2 assets, he’ll be in good shape to start their rebuild.
Attles re-ups with the Lakers
Analysis – New GM Outlawz has been slow to make any big moves yet with his roster but his top priority was getting back his young point guard. Attles inked a 7 year extension to stay in LA and potentially run it back with the likes of Horace Walker, Dick Barnett and Zeke Zawoluk. While there have been potential rumblings of the Lakers pick being dealt back to them from Sacramento for one of their piece, no deal has materialized just yet. It will be interesting to see how ‘Lawz proceeds after his last tenure with the Hornets.
Lenny sticks in H-Town...for now
Analysis – Early reports indicated that HOU GM Broph was readying himself to lose Lenny after he decided to test the market. At the beginning stages of their rebuild, they are pleased to bring back the Providence guard and should be able to flip him for a nice rebuild return. The Rockets have are flush with some nice prospects in Zelmo Beaty, Leroy Ellis and George Wilson so they are off to a good start in rebuilding.
Guy Sparrow’s Agent
Analysis – Not sure if Guy Sparrow is represented by Rich Paul or what but the man secured the bag for his client on a 3 year deal with Washington worth $33M. Known for his shot blocking, Sparrow probably got paid on the higher end in comparison to others with similar production. Guy's shooting splits aren’t great and doesn’t play a ton of minutes but is able to rebound and guard the paint when he’s in there. Break is entering year 2 of his rebuild with the Wiz so it’ll be interesting to see if Sparrow fits in their long term frontcourt plans.
Losers
NY Knicks organization
Analysis – Sorry, Mike. It’s always very tough when you lose a franchise player or even worse a top 10 player in the league by far. To add insult to injury, they lost big man Darrell Imhoff to the rival GM Ahsan and the Celtics on a 2 year deal. Mike is in a tougher spot now but hopes to rebound in the remaining free agency with $25M+ left in cap room and some quality players out there although not of Big O’s pedigree to be fair. The conundrum with the Knicks is do they keep competing since the Wizards have their 47’ and Denver has their 49’ 1sts. (Edit: Knicks got their first back from WAS). Do they try to play ball with new GM Royal next for the 49'. I believe NYK still has their 48’ 1st so very fascinated to see what Sargo opts to do next.
Cavs get poached by Philly
Analysis – Sixers GM Diego appeared to have found a solution in 2-guard in Lennie Rosenbluth – who’s been a solid 3 and D guy for the Cavs the last 6 seasons. Cavs GM Svedda reportedly commented that losing Lennie ‘was wack’ but later commented that he could find another mid type SG so they should be fine. The Sixers have some cap space left so let’s see if they can some other guys to fill out their roster and compete. Philly has won 32 games in each of the last 2 seasons so might be time to turn the corner.
Jazz has faith in PG Jaron Walton
Analysis – Probably nitpicking here but don’t like the fit here for the Jazz. I’m sure GM habes will find a better long term solution post FA but Walton just turned 38 and while still effective, not sure if he’ll best option at point guard if they are trying to win given his historical troubles in taking care of the ball. Utah had a busy off-season as they nearly landed a top pick until the Grizz kept it and got Willis then dealt with Memphis later on by sending big man Gene Guarilla there in exchange for the Dubs 47 1st and Luke Jackson. I like the Jazz’s draft as they came away with quality prospects Jackson, Hank Finkel and Ron Bonham. Big man Rudy LaRusso is still on the Jazz for now after being heavily shopped this off-season so we’ll see how the Jazz roster shakes out by opening night.
