The BBS Trade Machine – 2003
So let’s get to it. Same rules as always, this time with a bonus trade. I present to you, BBS family, 5 trades that are ready to be processed. If you so wish, you may post these trades. I only ask for a 2nd round pick donation for your time.
Magic Trade
Kobe Bryant
Sam Casell
Travis Best
Suns Trade
Pau Gasol
James Posey
Jason Williams
Celtics 04 1st
Spurs 05 1st
Mavs 05 1st
Suns 06 1st
Why for the Magic? Trade Kobe Bryant…In a contract year? What? Yes. The Magic are one injury away from being completely screwed and are in a terrible position long-term even if they pass this benchmark. If Break traded Kobe for players who can help and pickup assets, he’d be able to kill two birds with one stone. The easiest way to win in FBB is with a PG who doesn’t turn the ball over, and Williams is a winning Point Guard. A lineup of Williams/Posey/Shard Lewis/Gasol/Camby isn’t sexy, but that’s a 44-48 win team in the East. That’s the foundation to get to the next step. And then there’s the 4 1sts. Orlando does not have any assets to improve the team right now. A shrewd GM would be able to then re-package those 1sts for 1-2 more difference-makers and build a true contender. Kobe+Camby+crap is a path to nowhere.
Why for the Suns? I mean, it’s a no-brainer. Phoenix has been starved for talent for a few seasons and really has not had even a borderline star on its team. Kobe has emerged into a cheat code and is the best or 2nd best player in the entire league. The roster isn’t completely barren after the move, either. Andrew would still have Baron Davis, Tyson Chandler and some depth pieces. Even though Gasol is a solid 3rd starter, being able to acquire Kobe without sending a single blue-chip asset in return is a deal any GM ought to make.
Hawks Trade
Samuel Dalembert
Damon Jones
Aaron Mckie
Hawks 04 1st
Hawks 05 1st
Hawks 06 1st
Blazers Trade
Alonzo Mourning
Cuttino Mobley
Why for the Hawks? It’s desperation time. Atlanta has been silent on the trade market and had as bad of an off-season as is humanly possible given the team’s cap and draft pick capital. Ray Allen is a good player, but yikes…how do you not pickup additional assets in Free Agency? Styro has been oddly conservative with this core (if you can call it that) and now needs to make a major move. There is not a lot to work with on this roster, which takes the league’s top 10-15 players out of play….except Alonzo Mourning. Given his age and contract status, he should be attainable, and he’s good enough to pair with Ray Ray and win 42 games even without a stellar supporting cast.
Why for the Blazers? Zo is absolutely amazing, but I don’t see a clear path to the title with DB’s current roster. If you are paying a 33-year-old that type of money, I think you need to be well-situated to truly contend, and I don’t think the Blazers meet that stand. So what now, then? Do you trade more picks and more assets to put a team around Zo, or do you make a move like this? I like this option more. Dalembert will be a capable starting Center after camps and Hawks future 1sts are about as good as it gets these days. I would want to deal Mourning because his contract starts to look like a negative.
Sonics Trade
Shaquille O’Neal
Latrell Sprewell
Gordan Giricek
Cavs Trade
Keith Van Horn
Scott Pollard
Cavs 06 1st
Why for the Sonics? This team just doesn’t fit to me. Shaq and Eddy Curry is funny as a concept, but it’s a recipe for underachievement. You really need to be able to build the perfect team for a team with Shaq to flourish, and the Sonics do not have that. I think he’d be amazing as a non-option force in an outside offense. Building an offense around him? Yuck. This may not be a sexy trade, but Keith Van Horn is GOOD and can win you a lot of regular season games as a Starting Shooting guard. Seriously, he’s allowed to start at Shooting Guard! Pollard is a nice replacement big. I think this gets the Sonics closer to contention.
Why for the Cavs? Boredom. I’m not sure it makes them better – Spree and Giricek are pretty bad at this point and KVH was a cheat code – but a Shaq/KG frontcourt would be fun to watch. We do this for the fun! This would be fun. Why not?
Pacers Trade
Corey Maggette
Milos Vujanic
Eddie Griffin
Nuggets Trade
Carmelo Anthony
Eddie Jones
Vin Baker
Why for the Pacers? Sargo is a big time Knicks fan and Carmelo is the guy I think he wants. This is probably not a good trade for him, but nostalgia wins out, and the pairing of Gilbert + Melo (with sound frontcourt defense in Pryz and Hunter!) is too fun to pass up. After coming to soften on my Maggette hatred, I am now back in the “he’s overrated” camp. I am so fickle!
Why for the Nuggets? This trade is objectively good for them. Melo isn’t very good. He turns it over a lot and can’t defend. I don’t think he has high potential. Spence hates him. Get rid of the gimmick while he still has value and add some players who help.
Clippers Trade
Tim Duncan
Michael Olowakandi
Alvin Williams
Devin Brown
Hornets Trade
Allan Houston
Elton Brand
John Salmons
Parcelis Morlende
Clippers 2005 1st
Why for the Clippers? Ah yes, the big blockbuster! It’s Frangie’s team now, but it won’t really be his team until he trades Duncan. Los Angeles had a quietly awful off-season. LJ got a lot worse, Kandi got overpaid and the supporting cast is just bad. How to zap some fun into the Clippers long-term outlook? A nice package! H20 is amazing and still improving. Brand is eh, but he’s a competent big man and there aren’t many of those. Salmons is a solid B+ prospect with upside. And of course: Morlende. Spence’s first crazy player cheat code who was built to be some type of BBS legend with no three-point shot, high handles and high jumpshot. And finally: the Clipps 05 1st back. It just makes too much sense.
Why for the Hornets? It’s Tim Duncan. Yes, it’s a lot of stuff to give, but it’s Tim Duncan. Anyone should trade just about anything for Tim Duncan.
