1 Seattle Sonics - Rick Barry - A
The right pick at #1 IMO. Elite inside scoring means he could be a 35 PPG SF. Borderline B- outside so shouldn’t have any issue getting up to A- with camps. Looks like the next Twyman to me.
2 LA Lakers- Bill Bradley - C-
Bradley is a tweener who could be an excellent PF if he has elite potential. I don’t mind him at all. Just can’t justify passing on Cunningham. This draft had two all-league types and then a steep dropoff. Bradley would’ve been solid anywhere between 3 and 6, but not at 2.
3 Indiana Pacers- Billy Cunningham - A
I lean Barry over Cunningham because over the elite inside scoring but Cunningham looks like a top 10 piece too. Don’t know if that’s at SF or PF but think he’ll be elite at either position.
4 New Jersey Nets- Gail Goodrich - B
Should be an amazing scorer, but the rebounds are borderline D, so at a minimum Marty will need to +9 his defensive rebounding. If the rebounding comes along, he’ll be somewhere between Buzz Wilkinson and Newt Jones. If it doesn’t, you’re stuck in that Hal Lear/Adrian Smith tier of guys who can average 30 PPG but kill you on the glass. My guess is he has big potential and ends up in the former category.
5 Denver Nuggets- Dick Van Arsdale - A
Only Royal would’ve thought to pull off this elite scam. DVA is one of the best players in this draft, so he should be a stud after that +15.
6 Milwaukee Bucks (from Washington Wizards)-Archie Clark - A
I love this guy. Guaranteed to be a high-end second tier PG after the all-time greats we have in the league right now. Would’ve taken him 3. He’ll be a B/A- scorer in five minutes no matter what his potential is. Throw in good handles and C rebounding and that’s all you need.
7 Denver Nuggets (from Blazers via PHX, MIN)- Tom Van Arsdale - A
Part of the scam that landed Royal Bill Russell and got the brothers Van Arsdale +15 potential, so gotta give it an A. TVA has to be a PF to be good. Didn’t see any stocks notes on him so between that and his potential, his prospects at PF remain to be seen.
8 New York Knicks- John Block - C+
Extremely rare for bigs to come in with good blocks in their notes these days. Throw in good jumpshot, post defense, and handles, and this guy looks awesome…except for the C+[/b] rebounding. Remains to be seen if he can be anything more than a Wayne Hightower type. I’d give this an A if he had B rebounding coming in. Time to camp him!
9 Milwaukee Bucks - Jim Fox - A-
Where would he have gone if he came in as a small forward? You could argue for him at three. Solid scorer at all three levels, B- rebounder, and A potential. Nasty. He likely fell because he came in as a big and has poor blocks. No one asked about his handles or steals, so he’s a bit of a mystery, but he could be a great SF. Definitely not a big.
10 Houston Rockets - Willie Somerset - B
I love the Johnny Egan potential here and think this guy becomes a 25 PPG, <2 TPG type at PG. Just hate C defense and D+[/b] rebounding. Makes me think of Kyrie, Wat, Rochelle types, and you really need to have big time volume to be an asset with those deficiencies.
11 LA Lakers (from Pistons) - Eddie Jackson - D
At this point, when Spence calls someone extremely raw, I write them off entirely. He has D outside and low C+[/b] rebounding. We’ll see how much 90+[/b] potential and camps can bring him along, but I’m pessimistic.
12 Chicago Bulls - Weldon Kytle - B+
Love the player. Should be looking at A- or A rebounding with above average stocks in his prime. Really nice as a second or third big. He’s 24 and won’t be a star but great pickup at 12.
13 LA Clippers - John Rambo - B+
He’s going to have to move to PF. Should be able to camp his rebounding up to B+[/b] and turn him into Dick Ricketts, though I’d be concerned that he’s one of those guys who can’t crack 30 MPG as a big.
14 Miami Heat (from Magic)-Leroy Walker - B-
Mediocre handles, mid steals, C defense. If he looked like he could stay at PG, I’d love him, but the move to SG turns him into a backup who will score a lot but doesn’t do much else well.
15 Philadelphia 76ers-Toby Kimball - D
He has poor stocks. Looks like another Ray Rad. Maybe slightly better but I don’t think he belongs in a rotation.
16 Dallas Mavericks-Fred Hetzel - B
Should be a nice scorer and rebounder at SF.
17 Denver Nuggets (from Celtics)-Bob Andrews - B+
Nice pickup at 17. He’s old and probably isn’t going to do much in TC, but he’s already playable and should be a nice backup wing or even starting SG with camps.
18 Sacramento Kings (from Jazz)-Flynn Robinson - B+
Another Egan type, though I have him above Somerset due to rebounding. Mediocre inside scoring, but elite handles and a near lock for A outside shooting with camps.
19 New Orleans Hornets-Cincinnatus Powell - B
Like him as a wing. He’ll have solid volume and rebounding. Probably gets to B-/A- scoring with a block and a steal and 8 or so RPG at SF. Possible starter.
20 Cleveland Cavaliers-John Fairchild - B+
Pretty much the same story as Powell. He shot up to B-/B- scoring with three RCs. Always nice. His notes weren’t that promising but he looks great.
