1. John Havlicek - Havlicek is looking absolutely insane. 35.6 ppg, 8.5 rpg, 5.4 apg, 2.6 spg, 2.3 bpg, 1.4 tpg on great %s. Just unfair and he just got locked up for 6 years at 25 years old. And given the lack of SGs right now, I think I’d choose Havlicek to start my team around. Suns should be in the mix for a while with Havs.
2. Oscar Robertson - Oscar is amazing and is probably #1 on most lists, understandably so. The B+ rebounding at PG gives him a big advantage and he is an elite scorer that gives you 3 stocks a game as well. Turnovers could be lower but that’s not really an issue. Want to see Oscar carry his teams more in the playoffs.
3. Willis Reed - Basing this off of potential since Reed isn’t as good as some of the guys behind him but he’s coming off one of the best rookie seasons from any big not named Wilt/Russell. Showed amazing stock potential and should be on his way to A rebounding. Should be an efficient 20 ppg non option guy as well once he finishes developing.
4. Hal Greer - Love Hal, he’s probably my #1 PG in terms of production. He has to have close to 100 inside, which still isn’t good enough for play! His rebounding could be better but not a huge deal. His value will stop to drop next year though when he turns 30 and will be coming to the end of his contract. We’ll see if play ever moves him.
5. Jerry West - The logo got traded for Bill Russell last season so I’d say he is pretty valuable. Only 27, locked up long term and coming off of an MVP season for the 76ers who needed it. West is the perfect prototypical PG, he has no weakness. Hopefully Philly can build around him or trade him to a team that can win.
6. Rick Barry - We haven’t seen Rick sim yet but he’s looking like a surefire stud coming in with elite inside scoring and a great base. Should be A- A- scoring soon. Won’t get stocks but won’t turn it over either. The important thing for him will be his rebounding getting to B or better. Rick’s TC and camps could move him higher.
7. McCoy McLemore - McCoy is my son and is looking like a real stud going in to his 3rd year, it sucks for the Hawks that he got hurt at the end of last season. McCoy is becoming an elite all around wing in a league where there aren’t many of those. Still only 23 and got the pot boost so we’ll see how much better he gets.
8. Billy Cunningham - Billy C comes in with amazing ratings and many thought that he should be the #1 pick, but ended up going 3rd to the Pacers. Cunningham had similar notes to Barry and also just needs his 3 point shooting to improve really. The rebounding at SF is already there and defense should improve to a good level.
9. Walt Bellamy - Walt flies under the radar with Bill and Wilt around but he is amazing. 32.2 ppg, 14.6 rpg and 4+ stocks a game. Even on a tanking team that’s crazy. Still young, just got locked up and had the pot boost. Should probably be higher but there are a lot less good wings than good bigs right now so that matters.
10. Wilt Chamberlain - Wilt’s value is a pretty big debate topic. Some might value him higher and some lower. You can’t deny how he has carried the Warriors to one of the best records since he joined the league. Inside is just hard to make work in the playoffs when every team has 3 good defensive bigs.
11. Bailey Howell - I like Bailey a lot and he’s another guy that flies under the radar a bit. He is Dirk. His versatility being able to start and be elite at PF or SF is huge. Not many others can do that. Doesn’t have elite stock production or volume but he’s an amazing player to build around with all he can do.
12. Larry Brown - Larry exploded in his 2nd season for the Celtics. Looks like the sky's the limit for him as a scorer and he could be approaching top 5 PG territory soon. Stock:to ratio should be even soon and his rebounding could be better but it’s not terrible. Great looking franchise PG for the Celtics.
13. Rod Thorn - Big fan of Rod. I think I might like Thorn a little more than Brown since his defense and rebounding is better, but Brown has the bigger potential and more volume. We’ll see if Thorn can get to C+ inside, that would be huge for him. Don’t see greene ever moving Thorn after he traded Guy and he exploded.
14. Don Nelson - Nellie just had a big season for the Jazz in which he averaged 27.4 ppg and 8 rpg. While his stock production isn’t great, there aren’t many SG doing those #’s right now. I thought Jazz traded him pretty cheaply when they moved him for Ken Charlton and a few other pieces.
15. Nate Thurmond - Nate is looking great so far and Spurs hope that he keeps improving. Love the 14 rpg and 4:1 stock:to ratio but his offense is still a work in progress and I’m not sure he’ll ever get there. Defense and rebounding are elite though and he might have a legit chance to reach A+ rebounding.
16. Horace Walker - Walker is coming off of a monster stock season in which he averaged 1.5 spg and 3.8 bpg. Hard to beat that. He’s also very efficient offensively for a big man which is a plus. His rebounding isn’t elite but it’s close enough. Could be higher on this list but he’s a bit older.
17. Larry Jones - I went back and forth on Jones, not a huge fan of his turnovers but everything else about him is looking really good. Had a really nice scoring season at SF for the Kings. If he ever gets his tpg under 2 then he could easily move up this list but he still has some holes for now.
18. Jerry Lucas - Jerry looks great but is still working on his offensive efficiency and getting his stock production higher. Moved around a few times last season for decent value. The rebounding and jumpshot look great. Should have more pot too but he is expiring this year so meh.
19. Dave Debusschere - Dave is similar to Jerry in that he is still struggling a bit with his efficiency and block:to ratio isn’t quite where you want it yet. But he started with 100 potential so he’s still getting better. He shoots a little too much imo but he looks amazing. Exp also though meh.
20. Vince Cohen - Cohen is getting closer to 30 and doesn’t have the best contract for a trade value list but he’s still a top PG putting up 30+ ppg and 3 spg. Rebounding and turnovers do hold him back a bit but he’s great. Surprised that him and Baylor didn’t win more.
2. Oscar Robertson - Oscar is amazing and is probably #1 on most lists, understandably so. The B+ rebounding at PG gives him a big advantage and he is an elite scorer that gives you 3 stocks a game as well. Turnovers could be lower but that’s not really an issue.
