BBS GM Rankings – Season 4!
While I am a new head GM here, I was an AGM since before the creation draft started. I also didn’t know anyone coming into the league. This allows me to look objectively at each GM, no favoritism involved! Thus, welcome to your unbiased rankings.
To really stick with the unbiased theme, the bottom tier is the GMs in CY, and the next-to-last tier is the Gms who are in danger of being in CY next year. Some teams that need 42 wins/playoffs were not in that tier because I thought their team is in good shape to make playoffs. Please let me know if I made any mistakes in regards to CY!
Generally speaking, rankings within tiers were/are pretty close. I chose not to rank myself! Please vote kindly…
THE CHAMPS
1. Skillz
2. JR
3. Greeme
This was really splitting hairs in this group. In addition to winning it all last season, Skillz had the best team in the first season, in my opinion. He may not have had the best regular season team last season but clearly had a top tier team after his flurry of trades was over. His ability to cajole and make deals in unrivaled. As I have said, it is a next-level skill to deal for young guys and then turn them into better vets than you originally had. Many GMs, myself included, only trade for guys that make sense for their current direction, so they aren’t able to pull off this kind of maneuver.
JR – has a ring and Lebron. What else needs to be said? He did an excellent job in the creation draft, correctly identifying Houston as a star. He also traded back a couple times in the first round, allowing him to pick up other assets to help improve the team rather than just taking H20 in his given slot. The in-season trade of Kukoc+ for Big Dog cemented his championship. He did have some luck on the way – beating my Clips in 7 in the WCG and Greeme’s Nets in 7 in the finals. He also jumped up to the #1 pick for Lebron. Funny thing, he just jumped up to #1 in another league. Just a lucky guy I guess!
Greeme has an argument to be #1 as he is the only person to make the finals twice, and was a game 7 away from winning two rings! Like I said, splitting hairs. Great creation draft with a late pick, and picked his spots wisely in trades. Nabbing MJ basically locked up a championship and no one could do anything about it (unless Duncan didn’t get hurt in WCF!). Not a super active trader, but doesn’t lose deals either. Obviously knows his stuff, when he does chime in, I pay attention.
THE COULD-HAVE-BEEN CHAMPS
4. Ashes
5. Svedda
It’s rare that someone could trade Kobe and come out ahead. Ashes did just that, making the finals last season, and has his team primed for another deep playoff run. Crawford on the turn was a stroke of genius (or luck, depending on who you ask!). Either way, it netted him Nash which was hugely important for him. Ashes clearly knows what he has doing and seldom makes a wrong move.
Svedda had a dominant regular season team last season after relatively strong showings in seasons 1 and 2. FBB did its thing and knocked him out round 2… what can you do? Their big 4 is great. Turning Shaq into KG and Hill was great, and KVH was an excellent selection. Not sure where they go from here, but I still really like the core and would keep trying it if I were him, maybe make some tweaks around the edges, but he has built an excellent core.
VERY GOOD
6. Habes
7. Nanz
8. Sargo
9. Kobe
10. Stevie F
Habes made a finals and has had a couple of really good squads. Now he’s got D-Wade who is probably going to be a dominant force at the PG position. He also makes plenty of trades, and tends to do well in them. One of the top GM’s in my opinion!
Nanz has a lot of respect around the forum, and I can see why. The Lakers look very good this season after making the WCF last season. Dirk is great, although Arenas is quite the weapon at the PG position… Still, he has done a good of a quick tank and now competing.
Sargo was on the wrong end of the infamous Nash trade, but recovered quite nicely! Ending up with Vince was a great recovery. Knocked out the Cavs last season and made the ECF. The swap for Arenas… kind of doesn’t fit with the rest of his team, but this is a smart GM who will figure out his roster soon enough!
Kobe is a prolific poster and has made the playoffs all three seasons. He may be better at acquiring RC’s than anyone else is at anything FBB related. He’s got some good pieces and isn’t afraid to make moves. I think he made the ECF season 2 against the Nets? Either way he’s been in the mix before and will be again.
Steve (76ers) hasn’t had the playoff success yet, but he followed a different path. He put himself in a position to get Yao and now has a really great front court trio. This may be too high for someone who hasn’t made the playoffs, but I like where he has the team right now, and he says smart things on the forum.
THE REPUTATION PRECEDES THEM
11. Play/Insane
They’ve made the playoffs all three seasons, and are highly respected by others. I tend to agree with them on the forum. They haven’t made a ton of moves though. In a league with a lot of trades, there are going to be very strong teams (because many trades have a winner). It is hard to keep up without winning trades, because there’s someone else who did. And you can’t win trades without making them! Plenty of room for this duo to move up or down.
STUCK IN THE MIDDLE WITH YOU
12. Royal
13. Brian
14. John
15. Ahsan
16. Andrew
17. Jah
18. DB
19. Manas
20. Galo
21. Erbes
Our biggest tier. Guys who have had solid teams or will have solid teams the next couple of seasons. Not much separates these guys. Rapid fire here!
Royal has made the playoffs all three seasons and now has a great prospect in Melo. He also had a really good team last season before tearing it down. I get the reasoning behind his moves last season (wanted to pull the plug because Kings and Cavs looked too good), but in hindsight I think he should have tried to go for it… He commishes another league and clearly knows FBB.
Brian has a great trio and had a winning record each season, but still hasn’t been able to have a truly threatening team yet. AI is awesome but could have easily been a part of a title contender, he just needs to be better about shoring up the role players. Another prolific poster!
John has built himself quite the trio – Crawford, TMac, and Odom. Unfortunately, Odom just doesn’t sim quite as well as his pretty ratings. Still, a big 3 like that is impressive, especially given their ages. If they develop well, this team could catapult up the standings without any major moves.
Ahsan has got himself DD and Vince. A dominant wing duo is a good path to success in FBB. Now he has to figure out the rest of the roster. Still, he is a playoff team in the West this season and in a solid spot. Nicely done.
Andrew hasn’t made the playoffs yet, but he has avoided CY by breaking 42 wins last season. In addition he has built himself a young team that is pretty solid, anchored by Pau Gasol in the middle. He’s done a good job building a roster with plenty of potential!
Jah went young in the creation draft and has built himself a solid core. I think the success is bound to follow, especially when he went for a smart team style. Will it pay off? I think so, because Jah generally comes off as a smart guy to me.
DB has a pretty solid duo in Zo and Rose. The jury is still out on Chucky Atkins… If he isn’t a top 10 PG, then this team is kind of stuck in the middle. I like DB and don’t see any real mistakes he has made, I just think the GMs above him have rosters with a little more potential or have shown me a little more.
Manas had a very good creation draft I thought. Dirk and Chauncey was a great combo… Plus Artest, who looks great now. I wish he had stuck with that trio and just filled in the edges, he could have had an AWESOME team. I think he just gave up too quickly on a great young core. I think he will pull off the rebuild well though because he knows how to pick players!
Galo has been to the playoffs all three seasons, but I think hung on a bit too long to Webber. Should have gotten involved in the 03 sweepstakes! Still, been solid so far. Just hasn’t had a title threat yet so I can’t rank him higher and is obviously far from competing now. This might be a harsh ranking, it was really hard to rank this tier!
I like Erbes, he seems like one of the best guys here. Unfortunately, his big man gimmick was never going to work and was just a waste. He had something interesting with Rose I thought… The swap for Dyess wasn’t good. I am only ranking him this low because I think the big man thing never had a chance. Still, he made the playoffs each season and now the tank is on!
CY LOOMING?
22. Pig
23. Jeb
24. Game
25. Chipper
Pig actually seems like a pretty good GM, I liked his team out of the creation draft. He decided to tear it down after a slow start in season two, a bit prematurely I thought. For one reason or another, it hasn’t totally worked out since, but I have confidence he will figure it out.
Jeb made playoffs the first season, turned Vince into picks, and now has Bosh to show for his effort. Needs to make a coupe moves but should be able to avoid CY, or easily make it next season.
No playoffs yet for either Game or Chipper (only two seasons). The East is super tough this season. Can either break 41 wins and stave of CY? I’m not sure. The Raptors are off to a better start at least.
IN CY
26. Break
27. 13Rock
28. LosingaLife
Ironically, this is splitting hairs just like the top. Any order is fine to me here, and they are really only here because they are in CY. I think even they would say they this tier has to last. Break leads the pack because at least he has Kobe who looks amazing. 13Rock has Shaq and is in an easier conference this season, so he is more likely to make it out alive than the LosingaLife in my eyes. All of Atlanta is pinning their hopes on Ray Allen!
