1 Milwaukee Bucks - Walt "Clyde" Frazier
This pick was eventually traded to the Knicks along with the Wizards first next year for Walt Bellamy and Wali Jones in a huge blockbuster. The pick gets a shit grade because Walt is probably the 3rd best prospect here behind Dave Bing and Lou Hudson. I'm not explaining why I did it again. Look at my username and avatar.
Grade: D
2 New Jersey Nets - Dave Bing
Steal. The probably #1 or #2 pick falls into the lap of Chris Martinez. Marty is in his CY so it's a major question if Bing will remain a Net. There was a major deal which almost saw him head to Golden State for Wilt Chamberlain fall through. Not sure why Marty backed out, but whatever. Bing should be a superstar.
Grade: A
3 Seattle Super Sonics - Lou Hudson
Another guy who could have gone #1. JR and the Sonics have two dynamic stud wings now in Hudson and Barry. Very sexy. If I recall correctly, JR won a title (?) or came close with a man named Chris Hudson. Is this a good omen? We shall see.
Grade: A
4 Los Angeles Lakers - Cazzie Russell
Seems like the obvious pick here. Significant drop off after this. Elite inside, jump shot and handles. That is what every team loves to see from their wings. I'm sure his 3PT isn't dead either since he holds a C+. If that develops, he very well could end up being the best player in this draft.
Grade: A
5 Portland Trail Blazers - Jim Barnett
There was the top 4 then a big drop off. Poor Rex. Elite jump shot and handles but C inside is not that good. Will he have volume? Doubtful. I'm not wild about this pick. For Rex's sake, I hope I am wrong.
Grade: C+
6 Indiana Pacers - Dick Snyder
I would have gone Dick over Jim. Dick always prevails. His notes suggest he can score at 3 levels and has elite handles. What more do you need? Great pick here by the Pacers. They have a pretty solid young core - specifically of wings. Now it's time to add the BEEF.
Grade: A
7 Denver Nuggets - John Beasley
Another interesting pick. I'll be honest. At the time, I was not crazy about it. Now, he's going into his first TC as a B+ B wing. Love that. If he has any potential, this pick is a home run for theNuggets. Pistons. Beasley was part of a package that saw Buzz Wilkerson go to Denver. Solid piece for chipper.
Grade: A-
8 Detroit Pistons - Lonnie Wright
Good inside scoring, jumpshot, handles and quickness. Solid piece for chipper to pair with Beasley. Chipper really needs to tear it all down. I've been saying it for multiple seasons and he finally listened dealing Buzz. Ray Scott needs to be next. Just cut the cord already, bro!
Grade: B
9 Utah Jazz - Red Robbins
Yes! Everyone knows how I feel about this man. I like him so much that I traded John Thompson and a potential lottery pick for him. I'm hoping he can be an elite wing? Wishful thinking? Probably. I'm feeling optimistic. Not grading it since he's mine.
10 Los Angeles Lakers (from Timberwolves) - Dorrie Murrey
Had no idea who this guy was until I just looked up his notes. Notes actually look good. It's a shame he is on the Lakers. He will rot there. RIP.
Grade: B-
11 New Jersey Nets (from Hornets) - Clyde Lee
Awful pick. No stocks IIRC from the questions in the draft notes thread. You don't draft a no stock big who doesn't score in the lottery. I wouldn't touch one in the first round. Just a gross pick.
Grade: D-
12 Portland Trail Blazers (from 76ers) - Carroll Hooser
Limited stocks and mediocre handles. Sometimes I question if some GMs bother to read the Q&A and just read the notes. Another bad pick. Better than Lee though. Not much else to say.
Grade: C-
13 Los Angeles Lakers (from Heat) - Johnny Austin
What a steal. Was this an auto? Had to be, right? Scorer from all 3 levels, handles and quickness? Wow. No steals, but at this point, that is fine if he does all of the other things. Good pick.
Grade: A
14 Dallas Mavericks - Keith Thomas
I feel like Brian is usually auto'd and it usually works out decent for him. No notes on him, only Q&A was that his volume is mediocre and he's quick. Can't tell how good he is.
Grade: B
15 Washington Wizards - Lonnie Lynn
Good inside scoring, strength and rebounding based on Q&A. Lynn looks interesting. Interesting indeed. Was this an auto? Again, probably. If not, I apologize in advance. If he blocks a little, fantastic pick.
Grade: B+
16 Utah Jazz (from Grizzlies) - Freddie Lewis
17 Utah Jazz (from Rockets) - Donnie Freeman
Back to back here for Harold and the Jazz. Lewis can score inside, steal, has good handles and is quick. His outside is sitting at C+. If that develops, we have a major steal here! Spoiler: It probably will develop as long as jump shot and 3PT are camped.
Freeman is B+ C+ now and has good handles. Another interesting prospect, despite the C scouted. If we learned anything over the last few seasons, C scouted does not mean much.
Grade: B+
Grade A-
18 New Jersey Nets (from Hawks) - Ken Willburn
No volume. He looks the part, but will he sim like shit? Likely. Not a fan, but who cares at #18. Maybe he blocks and can be a solid backup.
Grade: C+
19 Chicago Bulls-Bill Turner
I like these guys with notes who say they can score at all 3 levels. Let's be honest - Play has found the gem in nearly every draft. Who the fuck am I to question his picks?
Grade: A
20 Detroit Pistons (from Warriors)-Mike Rooney
Solid player with good handles and jump shot. Could be something. Maybe not. I don't care. I'm running out of steam.
Grade: B-
