1 New York Knicks (from Bulls)- Earl Monroe
No real surprise here with the pick of Earl "The Pearl" Monroe, right? Some GMs said they would have gone Mel Daniels, but do you believe them? I don't. Monroe was the clear pick. Spencer had him in his avatar all season. Had to go with Earl. The Bulls jumped a few spots in the lottery, however, they had a guy that they were targeting all along and it was not Earl. This lead to Play and myself linking up for a trade. Earl Monroe was sent to New York for the 5th pick and two future Philadelphia 76ers 1st round picks. We'll get to what the Bulls did with the 5th pick in a bit...
Monroe pick grade: A
2 Golden State Warriors- Clem Haskins
This one is tough. Haskins looks like he can be an elite scorer. However, he's already 24, is he at his potential? He doesn't play defense. I don't think this was the right pick given who was available. Mel Daniels should have gone #2. I once again blame Galo for his shitty mock draft. Stoool was hoodwinked. Anyways, Clem should be good. It's not like he's a bum.
Clem pick grade: B-
3 Portland Trail Blazers- Mel Daniels
Awesome value here for the producer, aka REX. Mel Daniels is what you want in a big. Get in the RC thread and camp those blocks, maybe his strength and boards and let training camp do the rest. You'll have a very good big man for years to come. Big fan of Mel.
Mel pick grade: A
4 LA Lakers- Phil Jackson
I mean, what are we doing? I know Lawz has a lot going on outside of this and that trumps all. Jackson should be a good player, but not at 4 my man! Also in your CY, should have tried to deal this. Probably could have gotten Kojis+Guy from Braz or something similar. Jackson should be a solid 10/10/2 big but tough pill to swallow top 4.
Jackson pick grade: C
5 Chicago Bulls (from Knicks)- Jimmy Walker
Love this pick. Walker looks like a stud wing. Also, play has killed drafts recently. He had a guy in mind, found a place on the draft board they he saw fit to draft him and targeted him while picking up a few extra assets. Walker will be a 20+ guy easily and could easily be better than Monroe.
Walker pick grade: A
6 Seattle Sonics- Louie Dampier
The top PG on the board falls to the team that needed a PG badly. Dampier does it all. What is not to love? His notes are notes, ratings are nice and with some camps, he might get to B B before TC. Good player, good pick. Watch out for the Sonics this season.
Dampier pick grade: A
7 Detroit Pistons- Bob Rule
Another pick that was obvious to me. If I stayed at 5, I was taking Rule. I PMd chipper trying to move up from 9 to 7 to trade Rule, but chip told me he wanted Rule. I don't blame him! The 2nd best big and has a chance to be better than Mel. B B B base as a rookie is sexy.
Rule pick grade: A
8 New Orleans Hornets- Jimmy Jones
A lot of people expected Jimmy Jones to go to 7 to the Pistons, but eh. I am just not a fan of these types of PGs. Will that outside develop? Maybe. Maybe not. Too risky. Will score inside and has that good jump shot, maybe best suited in a balanced or inside.
Jones pick grade: B
9 Detroit Pistons (from 76ers via NYK)- Greg Smith
My favorite pick of the first round. High C inside, high B+ outside, can block and steal. chipper needs to +8 that inside ASAP before TC. If it can develop to a high C+ ot B- then watch out. He has a stud. He'll probably reach A outside. Looking at a 20PPG with stocks, a Ken Charlton type? I love it.
Smith pick grade: A+
10 Golden State Warriors (from Wizards)- Trooper Washington
Looks like tarzan plays like jane. Ratings look great, but the lack of blocks makes him a 3rd big at best for me. Stoool will learn that reading the draft notes thread is important. It's a learning experience. He'll get there.
Washington pick grade: C-
11 New York Knicks (from Nets via DET)- Pat Riley
I like Pat the Rat. He's probably best suited as a backup 1-3 and I think that is where he'll fit for me in NY behind Frazier, Monroe and Robbins. His C outside was the highest in the draft file. One +3 RC to his 3PT got him to C+. Good sign. I think the 3PT has a chance to develop into being at least average, while having a great inside and jump shot.
Riley pick grade: UNAVAILABLE
12 Seattle Sonics (from Jazz - TOR will pick)- Al Tucker
A stock man. Everyone loves the stocks. I'm just afraid he won't do much else. Not really feeling it for my brother Braz, unless he can get that rebounding to develop, which is possible. Get in the camp room and get to work!
Tucker pick grade: C+
13 Houston Rockets- Mike Riordan
He really has everything you want in a guard. Can score, steals, quickness. Solid solid pick here for Broph. Not sure he has star potential, but what do we really know? I don't think any questions were asked on him, so outside of his notes, it's a mystery. Sometimes this can be a good thing and you can find a steal. Soon, we'll find out if Riordan is that steal.
Riordin pick grade: B+
