1 New York Knicks –
Elvin Hayes C 6'9'' 235 23 B C- C- B+ B+ A
Elite inside scorer. Good strength, rebounding, blocks, steals, handles and post defense
Grade: A
I mean really not much question here, the drop off from Hayes to the rest of the field was pretty massive, and it woulda taken a dumbass to not pick Hayes first. Big for the Knicks though, searching for a big all offseason, Pettit retires rather than join them, but instead get an elite big for long term. Joins the previous 2 #1 overall picks, gonna be a scary team for a long while.
2 Toronto Raptors (from Clippers)- Wes Unseld
Wes Unseld C 6'7'' 245 23 B- C- C- B B+ A
Elite inside scorer, post defender and creating steals. Good handling and rebounding.
Grade: C
Not a fan of this pick, purely because Wes is poor at blocks, and his jump shot is only ehh. You can not have one of those if you have the other, and Wes will clearly get camped in his jump shot, but unless he gets to 90ish its gonna be hard for him to be efficient offensively. Add in that he isn’t providing blocks, only steals and post defense? Ehh, not at all my type of big. Woulda rather stayed at 5 and picked Keye, or, picked the next guy on this list.
3 Golden State Warriors - Jasper Wilson
Jasper Wilson SF 6'6'' 200 21 C+ C- A A- B B
Elite handles, quickness and passing. Good steals and blocks. Solid rebounder.
Grade: I for Stool, B+ for the pick
In questions it was noted he has solid strength. With blocks, Steals, you camp rebounding, strength, and throw him at PF, with elite potential as a PF, low turnovers, likely wont shoot that much with the passing. Key is going to be can he develop more rebounding at SF, because you want to leave him there to avoid the handles drop to 80. If that rebounding gets to A- (which with +16 to it I would expect it would), no reason he isn’t an elite big long term. No mention of post defense, which is the one possibility for a draw back, but I would suspect blocks can cover that. I don’t think any of the players around him woulda been notably better to pick, so cant fault it.
4 Orlando Magic- Warren Jabali
Warren Jabali SG 6'2'' 200 22 B B B C C+ A
Elite quickness. Good inside scoring and jumpshot. Solid 3 point shot, passing and steals. Solid rebounder. Mediocre handles.
Grade: A-
I like this pick, but I think you have to move him to SF and try to get those rebounds up as a plus. There was a big drawback noted in the notes past the mediocre handles, poor perimeter defense. No mention of blocks though, maybe there is a hidden bonus there. The good news is, he can score, good inside and jump shot already, solid 3 point shot, and camps have taken inside and outside both to B+.
5 LA Clippers (from Raptors) - Mack Calvin
Mack Calvin PG 6'0'' 165 21 C B- A- B C B
Elite jumpshot, handles and quickness. Solid passing and creating steals.
Grade: C
Ehh, he has poor inside, which puts a major ceiling on what he can do. No risk of a miss here, elite jump shot, handles is great, but also kinda just ehh, not going to provide anything huge? Feel like he ends up like one of those PG’s consistently passed around for peanuts, the Al Butler type. Poor inside is just such a big hinderance to ceiling. I feel there were many better options to take if you wanted a PG, though likely none safer.
Update: with the revelation that poor could be up to 45 inside, this is a pretty decent pick. Still dont think I would take him this high, rather shoot for the moon with Gilliam, but not as bad as otherwise expected.
6 Chicago Bulls - Don Chaney
Don Chaney SG 6'5'' 210 22 B B- C B C B
Elite handles and quickness. Good inside scorer and jumpshot.
Grade: A-
He seems pretty safe, Good Inside and jump shot, elite handles, likely not going to cause any issues, and potential seems likely to turn him into a B A- C A- C type combined with camps at least. Prime +15 candidate but on a team with a bunch of them. Also you can probably get more than he is worth from Boston if need be.
7 Chicago Bulls (from Wizards) - Julius Keye
Julius Keye C 6'10'' 200 22 C+ D+ C- B- B+ B
Good rebounder and shot blocker.
Grade: A
Dammit I just needed him to slip one more spot. Questions were good, Handles solid, Strength good, so really, no risk here at all, blocks, rebounds, should be a very productive defensive big for a long time. Starting with B+ rebounding puts him in the window already to start from day 1, with camps and no death in TC. Cant really go wrong with this pick.
8 Houston Rockets- Ron Boone
Ron Boone SG 6'2'' 200 22 B C+ B C C+ A
Elite quickness. Good inside, jumpshot and steals. Mediocre handles.
Grade: B+
Not afraid to grade my own picks. Really not a better option here in my mind (hence why I picked him), but also just a good player. Good inside/Jump shot is nice, but will need to grow the three point enough to at least be a B outside scorer. Mediocre handles isn’t great since he passes, pretty blegh, but then, that’s why you get him at 8 and he doesn’t go at 5. Questions did reveal at least mediocre perimeter defense to go with the good steals, so promising in that regard, and solid strength. + 8 inside took him to B+ inside. He does have a “poor 3 point shot” which I would take to mean 25 maybe?
9 Toronto Raptors (from Pistons)- Earl Manigault
Earl Manigault SG 6'1'' 215 22 B+ C+ C- C C C
Jumpshot is solid. Jumping elite, quickness solid. Solid steals, no blocks.
3 pointer?
Mediocre.
Grade: D
This is a straight gamble on him having hidden potential, as nothing in the questions let there be any possibility of him being a secret simming god. I think Braz knows that but wanted to pick his guy, and that’s fine, but there were definitely better options to be had and you let this guy slide to a later pick and try to trade in, rather than pick at 9. Could even use those firsts used to trade up to 2 to then trade in and get him, while still getting somebody at 9. There is every possibility Braz has a read and he explodes, but at 9 the miss rate is probably too high, feels like the raiders reaching for a random fast WR in the first round who had a 3rd round grade.
10 Houston Rockets (from Mavs)- Ron Williams
Ron Williams PG 6'3'' 188 24 C B B B C B
Good handles, jumpshot, quickness and steals. Solid 3 point shot and perimeter defense.
Grade: F
He isn’t likely to be bad, so I cant go lower than a C, however, I purely picked him off a last minute question about his jumping, which was stated to be poor, not realizing Braz had already asked about inside, jumping, rebounding and gotten back all mediocre, which conflicts with my question. If inside is mediocre and jumping, so is he, and there were definitely better PG’s to pick. If jumping is poor and Inside is mediocre, then there is strength so a bit of promise, but still, better pg’s out there to be picked, Gilliam, Chuck Williams, maybe even Rich Kirkland, and even outside them, Zaid woulda been a better pick if the first question is true.
"Update, inside is 45 to start, this is an F, with Herm still out there"
11 Milwaukee Bucks - Glen Combs
Glen Combs SG 6'2'' 185 22 C+ A- C C D+ A
Elite inside, jumpshot and 3 point shot. Elite handles and quickness.
Grade: B+
Stocks being poor hurts, if he could steal, it really helps. I get a feeling though he is a better perimeter defender than he would be given credit for otherwise, but that’s not why you pick him.
He is an elite backup PG/SG, with elite handles, elite inside and elite jump shot and 3 point, not particularly high passing, he is going to score 18 or so points in 20 minutes per game, and being off the bench, that production is going to be better than the other side. You camp the rebounding +16, that might get him to a C-, then I dunno what really, perimeter D, strength? At poor not sure strength is worth it. You cant camp inside, jump shot, 3 point shot, handles, quickness. Stocks being poor means steals probably aren’t worth camping but maybe after simming? Still, 4 years locked up of the elite bench scorer, and the more minutes the Bucks can avoid playing their normal PG right now the better.
12 Orlando Magic (from Blazers)- Herm Gilliam
Herm Gilliam PG 6'3'' 190 23 C+ B C+ C+ C A
Good steals. Solid jumpshot, inside scoring, 3 point shot and handles.
Grade: A-
Honestly, just a really solid pick, and shoulda gone at 10. Solid inside so has a good base in the 60 ish range, which is key for PG, you do have to camp the handles, presuming solid for handles on a pg is still 65, need to get that up and there is some risk it doesn’t jump, but overall just a good base for a PG with A potential, high upside, and probably shoulda been the first PG picked. Even if he goes the shue route, with solid inside a move to SG is reasonable.
13 Memphis Grizzlies - Rich Kirkland
Rich Kirkland PG 6'2'' 180 23 C+ B- B- B- C C
How are Rich Kirkland's handles? Jumping?
Elite, mediocre.
Grade: B
Skillz going for the homerun, and Elite handles is a good sign. Mediocre jumping is a good sign since that C+ inside is a bit up, but I cant give an A because
Chuck Williams PG 6'2'' 175 22 C+ C+ B- B- C B
Good inside scoring, jumpshot and steals. Solid handles.
Was still out there, and was the highest C+ outside and 2nd highest C+ inside, whereas Kirkland is the second lowest B- outside, so not a huge gap between the two. Yes you have to camp this guys handles, but he also shows good upside and you know he has inside and jump shot now. Not sure Kirkland was gonna go before 22, maybe, but Chuck slid to 23 so you probably coulda gotten away with it. Elite handles though mean no matter what Rich can play PG so it cant be a bad pick. I am however gonna go drop my grade at 10 a level with this bit about Chuck
Elvin Hayes C 6'9'' 235 23 B C- C- B+ B+ A
