14 Indiana Pacers - Gene Moore
Gene Moore C 6'9'' 225 23 B- C C- B- B B
Good inside scorer and jumpshooter. Solid rebounder and stock man. Solid handles.
Grade: B
Im fine with this pick, I think there are bigs taken in this range that should have had Zaid taken over them, but Moore at least is a solid stock man, and has better upside offensively. I think the better offensive upside makes this a fine pick, with camps and a good TC, or, the +15 potential as he is getting, elite upside here. A little easier to start with solid stocks, assuming that means over 60 blocks, than mid like Zaid and have to try to jump over the 60 marker.
15 New Orleans Hornets- Rich Johnson
406 Rich Johnson C 22 6'7'' 210 C D C- A- B C
Johnson is good with blocks, steals and post defense. Handles are good strength is elite.
Grade: A
No real risk here, you camp rebounds + Blocks, and he acts as a great defensive big. There will never be any offensive production, but he wont look to shoot and his handles are maxed for a C it would seem with that good note. Love this pick at 15, and while long term maybe some of the other bigs might develop better (there are like 30 of them in the draft about the same), this is the safest pick of the non lotto. Maybe I did overrate Jasper given this with a slightly less bad offensive game and more passing is what you want him to be.
16 Chicago Bulls (from 76ers) - Don Sidle
Don Sidle PF 6'8'' 215 22 C+ C- C- B B- B
Solid inside scoring, jumpshot, handles, steals and blocks.
Grade:B-
Sidle still has solid steals and blocks, which is good enough to potentially be taken over Zaid, but we are getting into I think maybe Id rather gamble on Zaid territory. Definitely a solid big with all those solids, and not a bad pick at all, just, feel maybe there was a bit better upside with Zaid.
17 New York Knicks (from Nuggets) - Dwight Waller
258 Dwight Waller PF 23 6'6'' 220 C+ C C B+ B C
Good strength and jumping. Solid rebounding and jumpshot. Solid handles.
Waller stocks are mediocre.
Grade: D
Ok, yeah, this guy should not have been taken over Zaid, but as I recall Sargo missed that there were notes saying his stocks were mediocre and was hoping they weren’t checked. Good jumping, so never really gonna be an offensive player, mediocre stocks, solid jump shot so a three point shot? Blegh. Zaid is clearly a better option, I feel a few of the later bigs are also better, would guess he has good post d but its not mentioned.
18 LA Clippers (from Lakers)- Johnny Baum
243 Johnny Baum SF 22 6'5'' 200 B- C- C- A C C
Baum any stocks? How's jumpshot/handles
All are solid. Inside on Baum? Solid
Grade:D+
Blegh? Just a solid jump shot, not even looking at 70 here for a guy you need to play on the wing. Just solid solid solid everywhere but no special rebounding, so really cant even play SF at C rebounding. Maybe an inside oriented SG but even then the meh jump shot ruins that. Could be used in a playoff matchup as a defensive specialist, but that’s about all I see for upside.
19 Golden State Warriors (from Cavs) - Dick Cunningham
Dick Cunningham C 6'10'' 245 22 C D+ C- B B B
Elite strength. Solid handles and rebounding.
Blocks Mediocre, from questions
Grade: I for Stool, C for the pick
These next two picks are both autos, so its not quite fair to Stool, but neither guy should have gone before the guy below him. Mediocre blocks, nothing really more than elite strength here, meanwhile Zaid is good strength, some offensive upside and A potential.
20 Golden State Warriors (from Nets) - Bill Hosket
Grade: I for Stool, C for the pick
Bill Hosket PF 6'8'' 225 22 C D+ C B B+ B
Good strength and rebounding.
From Questions: Blocks/handles mid
At least Hosket starts with B+ boards, but mid handles. Really again one of these two bigs should have been Zaid, but that’s the risk when you ask to be autoed. They probably are decent role players, and if camped out would be potentially decent 3rd big or fringe starters, but without camps not sure that happens.
21 LA Clippers (from Hawks via ORL)- Zaid Abdul-Aziz
Zaid Abdul-Aziz C 6'9'' 235 23 C+ C- C- B B- A
Good strength and post defense. Solid jumpshot, inside scoring and rebounding.
From Questions: Solid Handles, Mid Blocks/Steals
Grade: A+
I mean this one in hindsight is crazy, he does only have mediocre blocks/steals, but he has more potential than the guys above, so you camp those pre TC one and go. Want somebody to +15? Zaid is likely gonna go to 100. Nothing is guaranteed in FBB, and he still has a long ways to go, but so do the other bigs based on notes, and he has the best shown upside.
22 Memphis Grizzlies (from Kings) - Larry Miller
Larry Miller SG 6'4'' 190 22 C+ B- C+ B C B
Solid inside, jumpshot and 3 point shot. Solid steals and handles also.
Grade:B
Solid pick. Lotta balanced room to grow into a solid contributor. Wonder how many times solid can be used in reference to Larry Miller. Nothing jumps out for upside, but not doing anything elite or bad can be a good thing for development.
23 Phoenix Suns - Chuck Williams
Chuck Williams PG 6'2'' 175 22 C+ C+ B- B- C B
Good inside scoring, jumpshot and steals. Solid handles.
Grade:A+
Yeah he is better than #10 overall. Has a handles concern yes, but high C+ inside and outside, camp the handles, camp the inside, camp the jump shot, pretty good PG year one. Prime +15 candidate too.
24 Orlando Magic (from Spurs)- Jim Eakins
Jim Eakins C 6'11'' 215 22 C+ C C- B- B B
Solid inside scoring, jumpshot and strength. Solid rebounder and post defender.
Grade:B
Cant fault this one, it seems nobody ever asked about his blocks, so its an upside gamble. Does decent stuff all around, though based on notes does have a 3 point shot, with that C outside and a solid jump shot. Really just a risk around whether he blocks (or I missed the question, kinda shocked it wasn’t asked)
25 Minnesota Timberwolves (from Sonics)- Bob Kauffman
Bob Kauffman PF 6'8'' 240 23 C+ C- C B B B
Good strength. Solid inside scoring, jumpshot, handling and rebounding.
From Questions: Mid Blocks and Steals
Grade: A-
Solid pick, there are a lot of bigs like this, and he did have mid blocks and steals, with a good starting base. Not sure you can really chase the offense with a big like this, so blocks and rebounding? Maybe blocks steals and d rebounding? But can be camped to a useful player, and Minnesota is definitely giving him the +15. Then again, would the elite jump shot big with mediocre blocks be a better start for that? (Ed Johnson, went to the mavericks pick 1 second round? The good news is, Kauffman was like 6th best of the players by WAR and an all star, so more upside to be a steal.
26 Cleveland Cavaliers (from Jazz)- Butch Joyner
122 Butch Joyner
SF 23 6'5'' 200 B C C- B+ C+ C
Good inside, jumpshot, handles. Solid blocks and steals.
Grade:B+
Kinda made to fit in in Cleveland, we have seen a lot of these players, but useful when you don’t have to pay much for them. Got camped to B+ inside already, and fits well with Wilt.
27 Houston Rockets (from Heat)- Leonida Epps
Leonidas Epps SF 6'8'' 205 22 C+ C+ C- B- C+ A
Extremely raw. Some stocks.
Grade: D
These guys never pan out, really, and there were more talented players available.
28 Chicago Bulls (from Celtics) - Rich Niemann
Rich Niemann C 7'0'' 245 22 C+ C- D+ B B- B
Good strength and post defense. Solid inside scoring and jumpshot.
From Questions: Blocks are mid
Grade: B
Another mid blocks big with about the same ratings, feels like the 8th player like this Ive graded, at some point they all run together (and 3 more went early in the second). Fine pick, cant really separate him and Ed Johnson, though I love the elite jump shot, Johnson has no note about his inside and only solid post defense.
29 Washington Wizards (from Wolves) - Stu Lantz
Stu Lantz SG 6'3'' 175 22 C B+ B- B- C B
Good jumpshot, 3 point shot, steals and handles.
From Questions: Mid Inside
Grade: B+
Mid inside isn’t actually that bad, so Stu has some promise and should be a good backup 1 and 2 at the least. Think that’s a solid pickup late in the round, and hopefully just a bit of development and he can get to starter level.
Other notables: Really like the value in Ed Johnson, Rich Jones, Mike Lewis, Skeeter Swift, Otto Moore, John Trapp picks in the second round
Gene Moore C 6'9'' 225 23 B- C C- B- B B
Good inside scorer and jumpshooter. Solid rebounder and stock man. Solid handles.
