We had a pretty exciting FA with some big names and a player in Connie Hawkins who had no bird rights. Let's go downthe list
Lakers Sign PG Guy Rodgers for $164,182,624 over 7 years. - C
- Outlaws had his hand forced here to resign Guy at all costs but i think he could have certainly gotten guy back for less. But after dealing with Lawz over the last few weeks. The man is busy but still passionate to be engaged where he can. Having a kid a few days ago can he really let his PG walk? especially after adding a guy like Sam Jones for his 53? It seems like Lawz is all in on a short window with Phil and Cazzie still to fall back on. For a contract of this size he gets an F. But for keeping his GUY and going for broke he gets a B+ so that nets out around a C to me.
Jazz Sign PG Hal Greer for $89,775,000 over 4 years. - A+
- Bundy played this perfectly. He actually did exactly what Lawz should have done but it took some balls not adding that 5th year. Bundy is a straight shooter and he told Hal you can come back to get shipped out or piss off. Hal decided to take what $ was on the table (i am surprised if a GM didnt just hit MAX). The Jazz now have an asset worth dealing for a prospect to start this franchise rebuild around. Would be good if he could net his 52 in the process. *cough John cough*. Can that PG get +30?!
Super Sonics Sign PG Maurice King for $12,000,000 over one year. - A
-This is a pretty good signing. King showed the league he is more than a back up with a resurgence last year. No long term commitment and not a huge cap hit. Sonics get to run it back while the young buck develops. JR shows hes a savy GM who is conscious of the cap.
Raptors Sign SF Connie Hawkins for $90,000,000 over 6 years. - 🍀
- My Raps strike gold here. It feels like we came away with another strong rebuild piece despite Connie being 27 already. He played solid ball last year and can still be camped a tad more before TC. If I knew I was getting Connie i might have saved that pot boost! The Raps obviously would get an A here but it took no skill and anyone with the cap should have submitted a max bid. Crazy he picked us out of 29 teams and now out of 12. Maybe I wont trade him. Unlike the days of Jax Bryant this guy wants to be here. Now I got an interesting situation on my hands with him and Bradley.
Magic Sign PG Bob Weiss for $39,600,000 over 3 years. - A
- This is a great move for the Magic and my assumption is it will be a sign and trade at good value. Bob Weiss has played on some good teams and recently led the Celtics to a playoff collapse but that is less about him. Bob is great. He scores at a high clip and in a dry PG market should be able to fetch Galo a pretty rebuild asset or few picks. Other hand if Galo is tired of tanking after a sad draft drop (still got a good player) then he could certainly use Bob as his starter. Another thing to clearly consider is that the likely top PG in the draft Herm Gilliam fell to the Magic at 12. the guy had Good mentioned several times so with camps pre TC has a good shot to be an early contributor influencing Bob out the door. Good spot to be in. Will be fun to see that unfold.
Hawks Sign C Wayne Embry for $151,089,077 over 7 years.- B
- This is a lot of money but you can not deny the talent. The Hawks will trade their picks out indefinitely and DBW has been posting all over the boards he will do anything for a franchise changing player (did you not talk to Ahsan?) Other then the absolute bag can we agree Embry is a HOF type big man. The dude blocks nearly 4 a game with great FG % and above average boards. As a hawks future owner that value would have been better if Embry was stolen (I offered 17 Mil per for 3) but DBW did what it takes. Mccoy looks like an absolute star and its time to try to polish some turds into trade chips and get that ring. Embry has to be a part of that at whatever cost!
2050 181 Kings Sign PG Al Butler for $9,600,000 over one year.- B-
- With Butler being a perfect MLE target Steve had to give Al a little bit more cash to ensure he had that security for the coming year. At the very worst it is clear Al would be a solid trade filler in a contract if a deal was coming in. Butler is a solid player and starter level in the league. Not the type of guy you are thrilled about but we are hitting a point where KC Jones just retired and a lot of the young PGs in the league have not developed yet. Getting a B- just because its nothing crazy
Pistons Sign PG Tal Brody for $11,000,000 over one year. - D
-A dark reminder of the trade that acquired Tal now only for him to be one of the only filler options Chipper had on this team. With so much waste on that team right now and limited trade fillers Tal Brody is shipped out the door before he can even lay in his hotel room for a nap. At least chip got one filler!
Heat Sign SG Jerry Sloan for $25,500,000 over 2 years. B
- I personally would have gone 1 year here but Kobe is not projected to have cap next year anyway which allows him to keep this core together. The interesting thing is it seems like Sloan has had little to no trade interest over several years so why not like a 3 year deal at 5 mil per? Maybe too risky. I have a feeling the 2 year deal has to do with the expected retirement of Uncle Bob with 1 year left on his deal 2 yrs down the road. Jerry is a very solid player but slightly over paid. Call it loyalty. This is good for the future of Miami. Players see they treat the guys well.
Hornets Sign C Bevo Nordmann for $15,600,000 over 3 years. -C
-Not sure how the league feels about Bevo but I personally do not care for him. He was a long time Sun who has pretty ratings and never puts up the stats. Jah had unexpected cap and wasted it on an extended MLE who can't hit a bucket or free throw. Jah needed a big and had 10 mil in cap. Maybe I out bid him for Gene.
Pacers Sign PF Dick O'Neal for $4,500,000 over one year. - B+
-Good MLE signing. It seems the Pacer's GM is typically on top of the little things and respects a good filler player. Dick has been in market for a long term MLE extension type deal for a while but I have a feeling they keep the flexibility and 1 year.
Timberwolves Sign C Bob Reiter for $1,440,000 over one year. - A
-Great move to retain Blocking Bob for little money. As the Wolves look to repeat they gotta retain that depth.
Raptors Sign C Gene Guarilia for $11,000,000 over one year.- A
-One of the better 1 year signings in this FA value wise. Gene is a block machine with low Tos and a former Habes product so very well respected around the league. If I can get something good for him it will make this grade hold true.
Heat Sign C Bob Ferry for $13,000,000 over one year. - B
-Can't tell if solid filler or over paid depth. Either way not a bad move. 1 year deal with no real negative.
Cavaliers Sign SF Jim McLaughlin for $16,800,000 over one year. A+
- It would appear that this is a filler but I love this for the former Raptor. Jim is a good family man and very generous to his community.
Mavericks Sign C Rayford Wells for $12,000,000 over one year. B
- Wells was very solid last year for Dallas despite them being overwhelmingly disappointing as usual. Filler or a must retain guy, not sure but can't hate on it.
Mavericks Sign SF Bob Bennett for $4,500,000 over one year. - A
- Does this have to do with Buzz Bennett? Guy looks kind of interesting but I know nothing about him. Seems like Brian hid him last year and now will extend him. A for effort
Kings Sign PF Paul Silas for $8,000,000 over one year. B
- Former top pick turned filler. Seeing the future of Wes Unsled
Hornets Sign C Jerry Bird for $4,600,000 over one year. - C
- Jerry Bird is solid depth but did you need to burn cap on him on day 1lol?
Nets Sign C Dave Erickson for $4,500,000 over one year. B+- Assume hes good because Greeme signed him
Trail Blazers Sign C Hub Reed for $1,200,000 over one year. A
- Love Hub Reed. He is actually good. This is great value for the Blazers.
Pacers Sign SF Bobby Edmonds for $1,200,000 over one year. A+
- I have no idea who the heck this guy is but he is showing A pot and the Pacers scooped him with an LLE. A+ because why not.
