Hello. It's me again Margaret. I'm here to discuss the second sim of free agency by looking at some of the top signings. I just drove in -5 degree weather on the interstate to make it home after work so let's GET TO IT.
2051 182 Bulls Sign SG Wali Jones for $12,000,000 over one year
Wali is an excellent 6th man. He shoots great percentages and takes care of the ball. His rebounding rating limits his utility as a starter but that's why he is a day 2 guy. I would loved to have seen the Bulls bring him back on a multi-year deal at a lower yearly salary but understand giving him a one-year deal to maintain flexibility. Also, there were likely several teams offering a similar dollar amount over a 1-2 year period.
2051 182 Bucks Sign C Bob Boozer for $40,623,710 over 3 years
Boozer made his first all-star appearance last season and used that momentum to land a 3 year 40M deal with Milwaukee. Boozer generated little trade interest last season as a Maverick and was ultimately traded for one low-upside first round pick. I think the Bucks will attempt to flip him as they're knee deep in a tank. I assume they'll land a first from someone as Boozer can board well and is ok at stocks. and will be a cheap upgrade for desperate teams. I offered 12 M/1 YR to him and thought about a 12M per year 3 year offer but changed course at the last second.
2051 182 Warriors Sign PG Leroy Walker for $20,000,000 over 4 years
I have issues with Leroy if we're talking about him as starting point guard but in the backup PG/SG role he is an efficient scorer with manageable handling issues. This feels about right for Leroy as he is an MLE caliber player. He will continue to provide solid bench minutes behind emerging superstar Freddie Lewis
2051 182 Clippers Sign PF Gene Guarilia for $24,000,000 over 2 years
2051 182 Clippers Sign C Rayford Wells for $12,000,000 over one year
I was hopeful to sign one big and ended up getting two! I thought I may get outbid on Gene or Rayford as they're both 3+ BPG "bigs". I had 3 offers out on day 2+3: the two aforementioned Guarilia and Wells as well as Boozer. I'm happy to be able to use my cap other than absorbing salary in a trade and both of these guys should provide quality minutes. I just need to coach Rayford into not hoisting up ill-advised three point shots.
2051 183 Pistons Sign SG Marlbert Pradd for $13,800,000 over 3 years
I thought about offering Pradd a 5-6M/year deal for 3-4 years but the shooting efficiency cooled any interest I had. It also appears he is a leaper so the eye candy that is A- inside is quite possibly a farce. I do think at this price it isn't a bad idea and the Pistons may be able to package him in a deal with other players to squeeze out an additional asset.
2051 182 Raptors Sign PG Archie Clark for $7,704,732 over one year
Raptors take a low-risk flyer on Archie to compete for the PG spot. I don't mind it and think he can be a viable stopgap while Toronto attempts to improve the position. He isn't very efficient and may not even start over Butch Beard even before his first TC but it's nice to have options.
2051 182 Rockets Sign SG Frank Ramsey for $13,000,000 over one year
2051 182 Knicks Sign PF Kenny Sears for $15,000,000 over one year
2051 182 Knicks Sign PF Tom Heinsohn for $12,000,000 over one year
Fillers/trade fodder but they can be useful bench vets. I always had interest in acquiring Ramsey (along with Cliff Hagan) when they were younger but never could make it work. With a 13M price tag it looks like it won't be occuring anytime soon either. All three of these guys were respectable starters in their day but will likely see reduced roles until they hang it up for good.
2051 182 Grizzlies Sign PF M.C. Thompson for $8,500,000 over one year
2051 182 Rockets Sign C John Thompson for $12,500,000 over one year
2051 182 Nets Sign C Ted Luckenbill for $6,000,000 over one year
2051 182 Spurs Sign PF Tony Wilcox for $4,500,000 over one year
Solid role players brought back on one year deals. I completely missed Thompson or I probably would have thrown him the 12M/1 year offer. Curious if there will be any bites for him on the trade market. M.C. provides solid stocks off the bench and Luckenbill is an elite rebounder. All of these players should be rotational pieces the upcoming season. Wilcox is a great MLE signing as he is a high-end 3rd big and capable starter and you can't ask for much more from your mid level exception
2051 183 Celtics Sign PF Warren Davis for $9,282,000 over 4 years
I'll end this rambling by discussing the only other multi-year signing in Warren Davis. He isn't overly impressive but that's why you're getting him for an average of around 2.5 million/year. He certainly looks better than I believe some late lotto selections will be. For a tanking team trying to see which pieces may fit in long term I don't mind this deal. Warren will have the benefit of playing against Kareem this upcoming season and Ahsan can get a real sense of if he's worth investing in long term.
