TOP 5 AT EACH POSITION
DISCLAIMER: Please note that these are all OPINIONS. I may have forgotten somebody here and there and for that, I do apologize. But this is my ranking of whom I feel are the top players at each position. If you disagree, I do urge you to write your own rebuttal article. Thank you.
CENTERS
1. - Wilt Chamberlain - The reigning MVP is obviously the top player here. He is amazing at everything, don't think it's much of a debate for the top spot here. And still has 75 potential this upcoming TC despite being 34. Scary good, will likely play until he is 44. Great player.2. - Walt Bellamy - The reigning Playoff MVP clocks into the second spot here. Extremely efficient, elite rebounder, great stocks. Near perfect center. I'm sure Braz is thrilled with him.
3. - Jerry Lucas - Another guy with elite boards, elite stocks, can score efficiently and a pretty good rebounder. Lucas is leading the Bucks to crush CY. Nice player for nybombers3
4. - Bill Russell - Despite his age, he still gets 5 stocks to 1.5 turnovers, scores efficiently and is a good rebounder. Feel like he should still get the credit he deserves.
5. - Nate Thurmond - There is a dropoff after the top 4. It did become difficult at this spot. An absolute beast on the boards, great handles and stocks. Not the best scorer but capable of getting double-digits with a nice jumpshot though scoring efficiency does need to improve. It was difficult to leave Rockets center Mel Daniels off this list but I like Nate.
POWER FORWARDS
1. - Willis Reed - There's no question about this one. Drops almost 30, gets almost 5 stocks, grabs over 13 boards. Dude is a beast for kobe .
2. - Bob Love - Great handles, 4.6 stocks, solid rebounder, can score from anywhere on the floor. He is unbelievable. Scoring hasn't been all that efficient (could be the system) but his abilities are undeniable.
3. - Kareem Abdul-Jabbar - Listed at center but plays PF. Best young player in the game and the most valuable asset. Almost listed him over Love but didn't want to seem like a homer.
4. - Bill Bridges - Really good player. Great rebounder and defender, great shotblocker. Solid and fairly efficient scorer overall. Beautiful big.
5. - Horace Walker - Up there in age but can still ball. Used to be the best PF in the league but at this advanced age, still top 5 at the position.
SMALL FORWARDS
1. - Oscar Robertson - Used to be the best PG in the league but now he is playing supersub making hm his listed position of SF by default. Extremely talented player who is really good at everything. The former MVP and Playoff MVP takes the top spot here
2. - Dick Van Arsdale - A champ, Dream's Team is absolutely thrilled with this player. Personally, feel like he should play SG as he would crush there but he is an elite SF too. Amazing scorer with amazing handles, great rebounder, good stocks, elite overall defender. Terrific player overall.3. - Rick Barry - An extremely efficient scorer with amazing volume, great rebounder, solid stocks. Not the best defender but overall, just an extremely great player. Almost ranked him second.
4. - Connie Hawkins - Elite rebounder at the position able to drop 30+ with almost 3 stocks to 1.7 turnovers. The Hawk is only in his fourth year but looks absolutely incredible. Came out of nowhere really to randomly end up in waivers. Chooses to go north of the border in Toronto, they deal him, he chooses to go back and leads them to a title. Great story, great player. Already a legend for Braz
5. - Billy Cunningham - Very similar to Connie Hawkins stat-wise. Just an incredible player for Losanglife who easily has the best forwards combo in this league.
SHOOTING GUARDS
1. - McCoy McLemore - "The Real" McCoy is a beast. I wasn't sure about the move to SG due to the rebounding hit but obviously he is maxed out at rebounding at the SG position. An absolute dynamic scorer, leads the league in that category. Over 3 stocks to 1.5 turnovers which is wild given that he might be the best scorer and rebounder at the SG position.
2. - John Havlicek - A stock king with elite handles. Incredible rebounder at the position. Still one of the best. Hasn't been scoring efficiently this season but for his career, he is incredible in that area. Just looks like the next Sam Jones (who at his peak was a top five player in the league).3. - Lou Hudson - Loved Hudson out of the draft and still love him now. He is a freakishly good scorer, terrific rebounder, great handles, pretty good stocks. Could have argued him for a Top 2 spot but this position is quite loaded.
4. - Sam Jones - Bit of a drop off after 3 but Sam is nothing to scoff at. hf just got him and while his scoring is way down from years past, the stocks and handles are still too good. He has been playing non-option in an inside offense so get him as an option in an outside offense and he should put up 25+ PPG. Even at age 37, he still has all the skills to keep playing at a very high level.
5. - Ken Charlton - Scores at an efficient clip, elite at steals, gets a block, solid rebounder for an SG. Really good shooter with volume. Just a very good player overall.
POINT GUARDS
1. - Walt Frazier - "Clyde" takes the top spot for me. He's the building block of one of the best teams in the league for the original michael . Elite scorer and rebounder at PG, decent stock-to-turnover ratio. What more can you ask for?
2. - Freddie Lewis - Honestly, this is a guy who really came out of nowhere for me. I didn't even bid on him during free agency last year and he went for a max and is proving to be worth every penny. Over 30 points very efficiently, almost 7 boards, solid stock-to-turnover ratio. Looks amazing.3. - Hal Greer - Despite being at an older age, he is still elite at the position. Incredible scorer and elite defender, getting almost 3 stocks to close to 2 turnovers. Not the best rebounder but a great player overall still.
4. - Louie Dampier - Louie is an up and coming player. In his first few seasons, he really struggled with turnovers but now seems to be reigning them in which is great news for JR . Him, Hudson and Barry are forming a dangerous trio up in Seattle. Elite scorer, good rebounder for a PG, good at getting steals. The turnovers are the only reason he is not ranked higher.
5. - Dave Bing - Similar to Dampier, he is a guy who scorers at an elite clip, grabs over 6 boards, gets around 2 steals. Just has a bit of a turnover issue though not too bad overall, just not the elite handles the top guys in my list has. Still an amazing player leading Play , insane and the Bulls to compete hard out East.
