Offseason Trade Grades
Trade #1: Sacramento / Atlanta
Kings Trade:
Nothing
Hawks Trade:
Sarunas Jasikevicius
Trade for Kings: B+
Trade for Hawks: B+
Analysis: This is footy 's fist move as Hawks GM and it is clear that he wants to get aggressive during free agency by clearing as much cap as possible. I feel like it is the correct move and not sure what Sarunas' trade value is but there was a trade block and only ashes bit. I personally like Sarunas as a backup or maybe spot starter and feel like this is great for the Kings. Having Kobe and Nash test will be a blessing in disguise for them as they can use their capspace first to add more talent to an already uber-talented team and then re-sign the superstar backcourt. Cool trade
Trade #2: Timberwolves / Knicks
Timberwolves Trade:
Boris Diaw
Wolves 2004 1st Round Pick (Shaun Livingston)
Knicks 2004 1st Round Pick (Pero Antic)
Magic 2005 1st Round Pick
Knicks Trade:
Alonzo Mourning
Trade for Timberwolves: B
Trade for Knicks: A
Analysis: Honestly, Jeb need to make CY and this is the type of power moves they must make. Sure Zo is on the older side and will likely retire on his current contract but he is probably the best center in the league. And let's be real, they won't get a better player for that package as nice as it looks. Meanwhile, Skillz gets amazing value for his aging center. As beastly as Zo is, the window to get value is small due to his age and the Knicks took full advantage. I like this trade for both but moreso for the Knicks mainly because I loved the Livingston pick.
Trade #3: Lakers / Rockets
Lakers Trade:
Dirk Nowitzki
Rockets Trade:
Dimitris Diamantidis
Jerome Moiso
2007 Rockets 1st
Trade for Lakers: A
Trade for Rockets: A
Analysis: Call be biased but I honestly believe that this trade is as fair as it gets. Dirk is incredible, one of the best all-round wings in the league (especially amazing on the boards) and allows for the Rockets to move Vince to SG where he is clearly best. Meanwhile, the Lakers get a damn good big in Moiso, a future first and most importantly Dimitris Diamantidis. This Grecian won the scoring title during this rookie year and is absolutely incredible. He can score at will, grab over 7 boards per game and his steal-to-turnover ratio is damn solid. He is the total package and Nanz will love him. Ginobili has the rebounding to play the three but there are question marks on his defense so the Lakers will will take some time to figure that dynamic out but overall, their team gets stronger/deeper (and was already great winning 58 wins last season). Great trade, both GMs get what they want, everybody is happy.
Trade #4: Nets/ Pacers
Nets Trade:
Joe Johnson
Jerome Williams
Malik Rose
Pacers Trade:
Eddie Griffin
Joel Pryzbilla
Maciej Lampe (to be acquired in a future trade after training camp)
Trade for Nets: A
Trade for Pacers: C (but bumps up to A due to later trade)
Analysis: Joe can score but doesn't do much else well while Griffin/Pryzbilla built up of the most formidable defensive/rebounding frontcourts in the league helping the Pacers to to the Conference Finals in 2003 and Game 7 of the 2nd Round this past season. These are the types of players which truly suit greeme 's system and feel like his team will get better as a result of this. I hated this trade originally for the original michael but given what is to come, I gave him a high grade .
Trade #5: Timberwolves / Mavericks
Timberwolves Trade:
Darko Milicic
Jeff Foster
Mavericks Trade:
Nothing
Trade for Timberwolves: D
Trade for Mavericks: A
Analysis: My original thought was that this is a cap clearing move prior to free-agency allowing them to re-sign Paul Pierce and go after a free-agent but apparently the Timberwolves have no cap after this trade and after re-signing "The Truth." I don't get it. Sure Foster is trash but he is an expiring $5.4M. Sure Darko doesn't look like much but he is was a lottery pick less than a season ago. They clear $8M but given that they have NO cap in free-agency, I don't see the purpose of clearing $8M by dumping an expiring contract and using a former lottery pick to do it. I did once trade a former lottery pick (Kwame Brown) for cap prior to free-agency but I did that because it opened up enough capspace for me to sign a maximum-level player (didn't end up signing one but was criticized for that despite having reasoning) while this does nothing for the Timberwolves whatsoever. As fas the move for the @aaronjh , it's great. Sure he takes on $8M in salary but he still has enough cap for two maximum-level players so he can afford to.
Trade #6: Pacers / Clippers
Pacers Trade:
Gilbert Arenas
Joe Johnson
Malik Rose
Jerome Williams
Clippers Trade:
Tim Duncan
Larry Johnson
Khalid El-Amin
Pacers 2006 1st Round Pick
Trade for Pacers: A+
Trade for Clippers: B-
Analysis: The Pacers get the best player in the game so obviously they win the trade no matter what but this is amazing. Not only do they get Duncan but they also get Larry Johnson, a replacement point guard (though overpaid but does have camps remaining) and a pick (their own pick which isn't good but still a first rounder they can flip for another good player). The Clippers do get Gilbert Arenas who is an amazing young player already winning a title and a great scorer in Joe Johnson who does nothing else plus fillers. Duncan for Arenas+Johnson is an ok deal as they are young and Arenas is extremely valuable while JJ has been nice throughout his career but adding in LJ (whom I feel is superior to JJ mainly due to rebounding though do understand the age factor) and a pick is absurd to me. Should be interesting to see what @franjie does from here, now that he has moved Duncan, he can truly make this team his own. But just feel like it is poor from a value standpoint overall.
Trade #7: Pacers / Kings
Pacers Trade:
DerMarr Johnson
Kings Trade:
Kerry Kittles
Trade for Pacers: A
Trade for Kings: B-
Analysis: DerMarr is a solid player but at 5 years, $46M remaining, it looks like a horrible contract. Though as previously mentioned, the Kings are trying to add as much talent as they possibly can prior to re-signing Kobe+Nash so this is solid for them, not amazing but solid. The Pacers meanwhile offload Johnson's contract and bring in Kittles at a very manageable expiring deal of under $5M so that is great.
Trade #8: Bulls / Nuggets
Bulls Trade:
2004 Bulls 1st Round Pick (Al Jefferson)
Nuggets Trade:
Carmelo Anthony
Trade for Nuggets: B+
Trade for Bulls: A+
Analysis: The first draft day trade and latest blockbuster in the league sent shockwaves throughout. The #3 overall pick from last season for the #3 overall pick from this season. Obviously, the Bulls get the better grade here as last season had a superior draft but if Al is the Nuggets' guy, then Al is the Nuggets guy so they get a solid grade too. Overall, Melo has obvious flaws but is a damn good scorer and one of the better young prospects in the game. Feel like if he were in this draft, he would easily be the #1 overall pick which is why the Bulls get a perfect grade for this trade. As far as the Nuggets go, I don't think Anthony was ever really their guy and Al is the type of player Royal wants to build around. I fully expect him to be a 20+/10+ big who will get 1.5+ blocks so he'll be a legitimate starter in this league. If those +'s are a lot higher than my initial projections, then he is great. Time will tell what he becomes but overall do feel like it is interesting to see.
Trade #9: Bulls / Wizards
Bulls Trade:
2004 Clippers 1st (Sasha Vujacic)
Kedrick Brown
Wizards Trade:
2004 Jazz 2nd (34th Overall)
2004 Celtics 2nd (43rd Overall)
Trade for Bulls: B
Trade for Wizards: B
Analysis: Solid for both. Bulls clear some cap with Kedrick while the Wizards move up 10 spots to nab their guy in Sasha. Nothing too exciting from this trade, solid for everyone involved. Good job Play , insane and jahallstar .
Trade #10: Nets / Nuggets
Nets Trade:
2004 Nets 1st (Beno Udrih)
Nuggets Trade:
2007 Nuggets 1st
Trade for Nets: A+
Trade for Nuggets: F
Analysis: The Nuggets roster is absolute trash so this pick had a lot more value than the 20th overall pick of any draft, let alone one which isn't all that great. Beno will probably end up being trash too like the rest of his garbage ass team. greeme raped Royal badly on this one. Terrific for him.
