OK, here's a quick roundtable I threw together. Thanks to everyone that replied.
1. Outside of Bird and Magic- what was your favorite pick of the draft?
autumn harold : Calvin Garrett, but it's just an ugly class and there wasn't much to get excited about. I was taking Garrett or King if they were there at 13. Dealt into the class without having looked at it bc there's always good value available in the lotto. Well, this time there wasn't!
Braz : It was definitely me getting Phil Ford at 22. Dude was the rookie of the year in this draft and I am holding out hope till TC (dont shit on my parade) that he will be a gem. I also liked the Garrett pick. Almost took him at 8 but wanted a 6th big man.
hf : loved the Calvin Garrett pick and think Cliff can develop into a superstar.
kobe : I liked Calvin Garrett, he was highest B- outside and inside scoring. Should be a nice player if he gets camps and has a decent TC. Draft was pretty bad outside of first 2.
2. The tankapalooza for Bird and Magic is over. I know everyone's looking forward to MJ- but do you think Spence should space out some of the other players from that 84 draft (HOFers from that class include Hakeem, Barkley, Stockton, and Oscar Schmidt, along with other great players such as Kevin Willis, Otis Thorpe and Alvin Robertson) to curb another tank-fest?
Habes: Nah. I don't. There's nothing wrong with having a stacked class. It was a stacked class IRL and it's ushering in a ton of big names, so let's make an event of it and keep it as is.
Braz: I think he should for sure. Maybe turn that whole 10 year span into a lotto where they players get drawn before the lotto. Fun idea but would be a mess and not work. Wonder if Oscar would be good here.
HF: not a fan of moving drafts around, feel like it’s good to know when Jordan is coming since he’s the GOAT and everyone should have a fair shot at him.
Kobe: I think it's getting back to the point now where we should go back to doing each draft one at a time instead of adding players from future drafts. We were only doing that because those 50s and 60s drafts were so bad. Would be cool to have a super draft like that.
3. Name a player (other than your username or one that your username references) that you'd tank for in BBS without a 2nd thought. Can be a player we've had in the league already or one we're about to get.
Habes: Right now I'd love to build around Ewing. Kawhi was the modern player I really wanted.
Braz: Well i tried for bird woulda taken him 1. I might for Ewing? Not sure If i really like my team i dont get too caught up in that, last year i didnt.
HF: Dwyane Wa4de, I know you said my username but that’s my favorite player and I’m tanking for him no matter what.
Kobe: I'm gonna tank again for the 84 draft guys. Love Barkley and Jordan, two of my favs besides Kobe.
4. What should be the plan for when we circle back to the drafts that we had when the league restarted back in 2020? It's coming up within the year at our current pace, I believe.
Habes: I've been thinking about that, but IDK what we're gonna do. Spence didn't enjoy fake players, which I get because it's more work. I don't mind if we keep running it and have repeats of the same players. That's not a big deal to me. Even if it removes the element of surprise in how guys sim, that's a small part of the game, and Spence can always mitigate that by building them differently. But yeah, not sure what the plan is.
Braz: That is a good question. I am not sure i guess just run it again after we do enough seasons of fakes.
HF: I think another run of fake players will be fun. It refreshed the league for a bit before we circled back to retro.
Kobe: Well first, I hope we get a better version of the newer prospects this time, spence made them kind of generically the first time around(Wemby was a A- C C A- A- type big for example lol)I'm excited for some of the newer prospects we missed the first time too. Cooper Flagg and Cam Boozer, etc As for what to do after that, I'm not sure. Going back to fakes for a while if we make it fun would be cool then back in to retro again I guess if we make it that long lol.
5. Break just lost Scott Wedman- who he had traded what ended up as the 8th pick in the draft for- to FA. Is there a path for him to make it in the weaker West, seeing as there are still some teams rebuilding out there?
Habes: Yes, the path is to deal his futures and get talent from rebuilding teams like Milwaukee. But he's in terrible shape--current roster has no chance of resetting, and he needs gifts.
Braz: Break was once like 2 games out of the 8 seed and pmd me that he was coming for the lotto pick and trying to tank from like 9 to 5. I looked and realized it wasnt even mathematically possible to catch denver unless denver won a lot. Weird stuff. Im sure he can still make it out west though he has his futures I think. Those picks are more valuable if he makes it
HF: I think his team is bad. I don’t know if he’ll be able to make the moves to get the depth he needs with so little cap room
Kobe: Not sure break is gonna make it. He undervalued his firsts again and doesn't have many assets to get better. It'll just come down to luck and how bad the rest of the west is now.
6. Speaking of free agency- as of the writing of these questions, we just had FA Day 1. What were the best and worst signings from Day 1?
Habes: JvBK to Detroit P for MLE was nice. Jah signed a similar guy in Carmichael for the MLE but the more I look at him, eh, that's what he's worth. Kobe's PG signings were solid. Loved the uncamped Gus signing. Not sure I saw anything too bad, though I don't like Wedman.
Braz: The best was GSW not losing Walton. The other best was Habes getting his MLE. Worst was you paying Scott unless hes going to be your starter and you try to reset. [editor's note- I think I'm planning on trying to reset, yeah, and I am planning on starting Scott for now. We'll see what happens!]
HF: Liked the max to bill walton, and surprised no one tried to steal fuller from the hawks considering they had no hard cap room.
Didn’t like the wedman signing. Seems like a waste of cap
Kobe: Best signing was probably Gus Johnson for Knicks, didn't know he was still uncamped or I would've bid. I say my Butch signing is pretty good too, he's awesome and still got a few prime years. Don't think there were any bad signings really. Wedman is meh but the contract is only 3 years so no biggie.
7. What do y'all do for a living? (Me, I'm a hotel accountant)
Habes: Lawyer.
Braz: I am a bbs GM and work in sales
HF: I’m a truck driver and deliver fuel all around Florida.
Kobe: Boring IT work for hospitals
8. What's the most money you've ever won on a sports bet in real life? Or, you can do your biggest loss, either one.
Habes: In November or December 2018 I won an $8 Draftkings tournament for $50k. It was a short slate and I stacked guys on the Blazers and Celtics. The last game of the night was Hawks-Lakers and I had no one in it, but there was like zero scoring down the stretch and I managed to hold on. It was sick as hell tbh.
Braz: I think ive won like 500 on a parlay nothing crazy. But I also never bet more than like 200 and that was on eagles super bowl Have a buddy that won like 22k off a daily line up pretty wild.
HF: I got a bunch of money on the line with the Heat in the finals so hopefully we can bring it home.
Kobe: Don't gamble a lot. Most I've lost is probably $100 lol. Never won a lot.
9. As of today, the Braves are 3 games ahead of the Marlins, 6.5 games ahead of the Mets, 7.5 ahead of the Phillies, and 11 ahead of the Nationals. Predict the winner of the NL East and by how many games.
Habes: Happy to ignore this one cheers.
Braz: Man last night was a rough L. Seeing Jake go down really hurt today too. Mets obvs look smart but really feel for the guy, one of my all time favorites. Braves are hot and likely win by 4 games. Mets will get a wild card. Maybe Miami too.
HF: Love baseball. I think the Braves win it but the Marlins are making some noise and if they can get some more hitting and bullpen help, they are gonna be a problem. Have a top rotation in baseball even with Sandy not doing good. Braves by 10.
Kobe: Braves are on cruise control, will probably win the division by 8-10 games
Everyone was correct on the last question with the winner, fwiw.
1. Outside of Bird and Magic- what was your favorite pick of the draft?
