The BBS Trade Machine – 2004-05
So let’s get to it. Same rules as always, this time with a bonus trade. I present to you, BBS family, 5 trades that are ready to be processed. If you so wish, you may post these trades. I only ask for a 2nd round pick donation for your time.
Warriors Trade
Antoine Walker
Lakers 2006 1st
Hornets Trade
Grant Hill
Why for the Warriors? Manas has enough talent on his team to make the Contract Year – and probably has around a 60/40 chance to hit 42 at the moment – but the team lacks a coherent identity. Nash & Martin are an excellent backcourt duo, but his next two best players both need to be in a balanced or inside focus to succeed. Antoine is worthless in an outside system, and he’ll bleed shots and turnovers if an offense isn’t catered to his strengths. This is a lot to give up for Hill – arguably the more valuable player and a solid 1st – but it would all but guarantee the team reaches the playoffs. Nash/Martin/Hill will combine for 70-75 PPG in an outside system, and Theo+Marion are decent enough defensive anchors.
Why for the Hornets? Pig is one of the few GMs in the league who does not need to stick to an outside focus. He’s already running the PACCE Man at Point Guard and has a number of players who are good fits for a balanced or inside team. Enter Antoine: a terrible piece and net negative in the wrong situation, but a very valuable player under the right circumstances. He would be setup to succeed in New Orleans. From a value perspective, this is also a no-brainer. But that is what we call Contract Year Gainz.
Heat Trade
Michael Finley
Larry Johnson
Andre Emmett
Chucky Atkins
Wolves Trade
Mike Bibby
Erick Dampier
Primoz Brezec
Juwan Howard
Why for the Heat? Kobe has an excellent team but he needs a Point Guard. Chucky Atkins rebounding likely won’t cut it in the playoffs and if he wants to compete with the Big Dawgs in the East, he should be targeting a Point Guard who can help. Mike Bibby is one of the more underrated players in the league and should thrust Miami into “favorite” status. He trades four quality rotation pieces here, but Miami boasts one of the deepest team’s in the league and can easily replace the loss of his wings. Dampier is also an underutilized weapon who will see minutes.
Why for the Wolves? Jeb is AWOL, and his team is suffering. Nothing about his DC’s make sense. You know his wing depth is a problem when people are clamoring for the Wolves to play Jason Richardson more minutes. The critics are not wrong, but Jason Richardson also sucks. The Wolves frankly need more pieces. Even though Bibby is an ace in the hole at Point Guard, the team is deprived of value and good pieces at other positions. Bosh/Emmett would form one of my favorite frontcourt duos and Finley + LJ would give this squad a needed boost at the wing spots.
Spurs Trade
Tracy McGrady
DJ Mbenga
Anfernee Hardaway
Bulls Trade
Carmelo Anthony
Tony Battie
Matt Barnes
William Avery
Why for the Spurs? First off, we know this trade is impossible because John already made his one trade of the year. I’ve offered him both Arenas and Billups this season and he was too slow on the trigger. But the need is obvious: DEPTH. He has to make a 1-2 or 1-3 deal. I think T-Mac is a better candidate Crawford because he is worse but simultaneously has more value, since y’all are idiots. I don’t love Anthony, Battie or Barnes in a vacuum, but ‘Melo is a good enough centerpiece to build around and the other 3 players are not corpses…so they represent an upgrade.
Why for the Bulls? Chicago has had a brilliant off-season and just needs to land the plane. I am personally a Melo-skeptic. Even if he has meaningful potential yet, I don’t think he ever turns into a transcendent wing. There are a ton of good SGs and SFs out there and in order to be a top-15 player in the league at that position, you’d need to be a 30-35 PPG guy with Melo’s porous defense. It’s possible, but even then you are looking at a Ricky Davis type without steals. All three guys the Bulls add here are role players and T-Mac is a perfect complement to Lou Will and Tony Parker.
Jazz Trade
Emeka Okafor
JR Smith
Quentin Richardson
Jazz 07 1st
Rockets Trade
Manu Ginobili
Why for the Jazz? JR has an embarrassment of riches at PF/C and is one of the few guys in the league who can afford to trade a young big for an upgrade at SG/SF. Manu Ginobili is absolutely awesome and deserves more respect around the league. He’s good for 25 PPG every season, puts up high steals and low turnovers. He’s the perfect complement to LeBron because he never turns it over. And LeBron-Manu-Prince-Chandler-Beidrenes will COMPETE for a long time.
Why for the Rockets? Ashan needs PIECES. He stole Manu and needs to use this as an arbitrage opportunity. He can’t wait a year for Manu to lose value as an expiring contract. Who cares about his pick…he’s not making the playoffs and he’s not winning 42. This would be an awesome return. JR Smith looks mighty fine, Emeka Okafor is a really solid two-way big (though I wish he got more steals) and he picks up a first. Good deal.
Grizz Trade
Deron Williams
Brian Grant
Suns Trade
Jason Williams
Arvydas Macijauskas
Michael Ruffin
Why for the Grizzlies? Oh man, this is not a sexy trade, but it is a good one. I am not a Deron Williams believer. If Erbes goes into the CY with him as his starting Point Guard, he will not be the GM of his team much longer. A nice way to get ahead would be to add a hyper-efficient Point Guard in Jason Williams. He’s not amazing, but he’s a surefire way to hit 45 wins and won’t cost you any games. Arvydas is flawed but super talented and will allow Erbes to parlay Iggy or Granger for a big of equal value. Ruffin is good enough to warrant resigning at $3-5M a year. And dumping the Brian Grant contract is a huge step.
Why for the Suns? Value play. Andrew whiffed on the Manu/Arvydas deal and cuts his losses. Jason Williams doesn’t get the love he deserves around the league and doesn’t seem to have much value. Deron Williams isn’t my favorite prospect, but he’s objectively valuable and is a risk worth taking.
