2001 Early Lotto Mock Draft - *Based on Day 15 standings and best available player rankings
1- Phoenix Suns – Pau Gasol
C 7'0'' 250 21 years old
B C C C+ C+ A Spain
Whether it’s Andrew ’s Suns or another team that lands the top spot, it would be hard pressed to pass on Gasol. At just 21, Gasol is one the most polished bigs in the draft and will probably end up being the best player in the end. He brings strong inside scoring presence along with shot blocking and rebounding in the post. If Phoenix ultimately gets him, Gasol and Blount would be a deadly scoring combo in their frontcourt for years.
Projected rookie stat line: 17 PPG, 9 RPG, 1.6 BPG, 2.8 APG, 48% FG
2- Los Angeles Lakers – Gilbert Arenas
PG 6'3'' 191 19 years old
B B C D+ D+ A Arizona
Arenas aka Hibachi aka Agent 0 comes in at the second pick with some funky defensive and rebounding ratings. However, he should easily be the top scorer in this class when it’s all said and done. A move to SG seems warranted given his C handles although his numbers could project much higher at PG. Either way you slice it, Arenas should be a perennial 25 PPG scorer in this league even with little camps pumped into him. Nanz would gladly pair Arenas with Larry Hughes to join a formidable backcourt tendem in LA.
Projected rookie stat line: 18.7 PPG, 4 APG, 3.1 RPG, 43% FG, 39% 3PT
3- San Antonio Spurs- Tony Parker
PG 6'2'' 185 19 years old
B- C C B- D+ A France
Boy, would @ukfanjohn be elated if he can the best pure point guard in the draft at #3. Parker would be very welcomed addition to add to the core of Odom, Martin and House. The French man at 19 years old is still very raw but should have the quickness and potential to put up monster numbers for a long time. Parker should get a slight edge over top wings vying for the top 3 spot due to his age and point guards being highly valued in BBS.
Projected rookie stat line: 12.7 PPG, 5.1 APG, 2.1 RPG, 44% FG, 35% 3PT
4- Milwaukee Bucks – Joe Johnson
SF 6'7'' 240 20 years old
B- B- C+ C C- A Arkansas
Steve W. would go with the best available player at this spot and it has to be Joe Johnson, the former Razorback. With highly polished offensive ratings and a good handle to boot, Johnson provides really high upside to anyone drafting outside the top 3. If JJ gets paired with Rashard Lewis and Rasheed Wallace, you have a deadly 1-2-3 combo.
Projected rookie stat line: 15.7 PPG, 3.4 APG, 5.5 RPG, 45% FG, 37% 3P
5- Sacramento Kings- Jason Richardson
SG 6'6'' 220 20 years old
B- B- C C D A Michigan St.
J-Rich comes in a tick behind Joe Johnson as the 2nd best wing in the draft. Aside from Richard Jefferson, Richardson is one of the best natural athletes in the draft with a couple future slam dunk titles in his future. Sactown GM ashes would be elated to add J-Rich to a high scoring attack of Kobe and Crawford if he lands at #5.
Projected rookie stat line: 14.1 PPG, 3.1 APG, 4.1 RPG, 48% FG, 34% 3P
6- Portland Trail Blazers – Tyson Chandler
C 7'0'' 240 lbs 19 years old
B- D+ D+ B- C+ A Dominguez HS (CA)
The pride of Dominguez high school in Compton, Tyson Chandler slides just outside of top 5 due to his raw ratings. TC needs some work and some camps injected into him but should be an elite shotblocker and rebounder if he pans out. At 19, he also can add a couple more pounds and an inch which should also makes him attractive and ahead of some competitors at this spot. GM Orlando Magic Johnson would gladly welcome Chandler into his frontcourt if available here.
Projected rookie stat line: 10.8 PPG, 9.1 RPG, 1.4 BPG, 2.1 APG, 48% FG
7- Seattle Sonics – Zach Randolph
PF 6'9'' 250 20 years old
B C C C B- A Michigan St
Z-Bo should duke it out with Eddy Curry and Diop for the highest overall strength rating in this class. At 6’9 250 pounds, the former Spartan is an absolute bully down low and should dominate with his inside scoring and the right camps put into him. If utilized correctly, 13rock could get the potential steal of the lotto at #7.
Projected rookie stat line: 15.1 PPG, 9.1 RPG, 0.8 BPG, 3.1 APG, 47.4% FG
8- Washington Wizards- Eddy Curry
C 7'0'' 295 19 years old
B D+ D C C A Thornwood HS (IL.)
The former Illinois Mr. Basketball and McDonald’s MVP checks in here at #8. Curry might be the biggest wild card in the lotto. Will his brute strength and size translate to an All-Star center someday or simply a backup big on the bench? Can camps get his rebounding and defense to an elite level or his potential in the lower end? Whatever the case my be, jahallstar would be hard pressed to pass on a project like Curry at this spot.
Projected rookie stat line: 11.1 PPG, 8.1 RPG, 1.1 BPG, 1.1 APG, 44.4% FG
9- Orlando Magic- Richard Jefferson
SF 6'7'' 233 21 years old
C+ B- D+ B- C B Arizona
RJ joins fellow former U of A teammate Arenas in the top 10 in this scenario. In past versions, RJ has always been a strong 3-D guy with pretty good upside and athletic ability. His D+ handles at the SF are concerning but he should be able to contribute right away to most teams. If breakthewalls makes it through this season, Jefferson could be a guy to target.
Projected rookie stat line: 10.7 PPG, 5.3 RPG, 1.1 SPG, 2.1 APG, 46.4% FG
10- Phoenix Suns- Shane Battier
SF 6'8'' 220 23 years old
C B C- B C- B Duke
Battier slots in right behind RJ with anticipated less upside but more polish in terms of ball handling and on ball defense. The former Blue Devil would be a great compliment for any contender looking for a lockdown defender on the wing. Andrew or another team could scoop him at this point and be reap the benefits of a shutdown 3.
Projected rookie stat line: 9.5 PPG, 5.1 RPG, 1.3 SPG, 3.1 APG, 44.4% FG
11- Orlando Magic (From Cleveland)- Kwame Brown
C 6'11'' 270 19 years old
C+ D+ D+ C+ C+ A Glynn Academy (GA)
Kwame has a similar profile to Curry with much less polish on the offensive end. His C+ rebounding/defense looks good enough to be improved on over time and being only 19 helps his cause. It’s going to come down to how much potential Kwame has in the tank to determine if he’s too high or low on this mock. Someone like breakthewalls could take a flyer on this project.
Projected rookie stat line: 8.1 PPG, 8.1 RPG, 1.2 BPG, 1.3 APG, 43.7% FG
12- Toronto Raptors- Eddie Griffin
PF 6'10'' 220 20 years old
C+ C D+ B- C+ B Seton Hall
Griffin is a tantalizing player if available here at #12. He’s 6’10 power forward with decent offensive game and ability to get blocks in bunches. His game could blossom under the right GM and team philosophy. I don’t see him dropping out of the lotto and some team like caper could snatch him here.
Projected rookie stat line: 8.7 PPG, 8.5 RPG, 1.7 BPG, 2.3 APG, 42.7% FG
13- Atlanta Hawks- DeSagna Diop
C 7'0'' 300 19 years old
C D+ D B- C+ A Oak Hill Academy (VA)
Shotblocking big men are always in high demand and there’s definitely a good one in Diop. The former Senegal import has the tools to be a great backup big and serviceable starter for a lot of teams. At a whopping 300 pounds and only 19 yers old, Diop projects to be a dominant force on defense for years to come. Losanglife could be getting a great piece here at the tail end of the lotto.
Projected rookie stat line: 7.1 PPG, 7.7 RPG, 1.8 BPG, 1.3 APG, 41.7% FG
1- Phoenix Suns – Pau Gasol
