Knights of the Round Table - Candid Conversations
Thought I would shake this Round Table up and ask some questions about the participants as well as get their thoughts on a wide range subjects that have come up over the last few days. I choose 2 guys that I've known for a while, and 2 guys that recently have enjoyed BSing with to do this one in a comfort zone. When I do the next, gonna spread the net further. The questions I tried to come up with were to avoid any that I thought would be obvious and thus stale, and I hope I managed to strike on ones that haven't been done to death in the past, as well as a few to allow people to get to know each other a tad more. I have really enjoyed reading the responses and I hope you all do as well. So without further ado I pop my cherry with this, brianh's first ever article, the type of which kobe hates, alas here we go.
JAH - Lets see. I'm guessing it has been about 18 years. Unless we count Madden then it was a few years before that. My first FBB league was in the 2002 time period. The league was CSL. From there I joined NBN. That league was tons of fun. When I joined BBS I was the Timberwolves and if I remember correctly Spencer simmed one day every day. I could be wrong but I'm pretty sure that was the league that did that. I think through Spencer I joined my first OOTP league probably in the 2008 time frame. It began with a P and I was the Marlins. We then progressed to Gabl and BBSBL and such...good times. We are getting old.
spence simp account - I've always been a quote, unquote gamer. Sega Genesis, N64, PS2, PS3, Xbox 360. Loved em all. Recently just invested in a gaming PC for the first time. Huge learning curve, but feel like it's more rewarding than console play. I think my first introduction to BBS was my sophomore year of college, so like 2009ish, through my former roomie Markus KellerMan. Had no idea something like this existed previously. Not a huge basketball guy, but took to BBSBL super fast. Steve was running it back then. The actual idea of playing GM with 29 other REAL people instead of against the computer was awesome. Plus all the shitposting. Unbeatable. I think I joined 5 leagues immediately. A true gt.
jr - My draft was actually very solid. I got a lof of good value every time I picked. I regret not moving up once or twice with teams to grab my guy, after trading back twice in the first round I think I would give myself a B+. The west is bad so not sure how my team would fair in the East, but I have a good combination of Scoring and Defense on my team. Do I regret on passing on somebody in the first 3 rounds? Nah, H20, DRob and Kukoc seem like a solid first 3 picks considering where I picked at each time. I did want Patrick Ewing late though.
JAH - I came into the draft with pick 23. I pretty much had 3 options. Draft 1 good young defensive piece (Ben Wallace) and try to put old scoring around him to compete early. Go 100% young or do some sort of hybrid like Chicago did. Seeing I hate rebuilds I knew if I went the old route I'd probably be stuck in mediocrity for a decade or be forced to go into an all out rebuild. So I chose to go young. I think I got 3 good young pieces with my first 3 picks. I think Peja / Redd / Terry all excel in an outside offense. They are obviously not ready to compete now but all three could be B- A type offensive weapons in a year or two. All three have had games where they put up 30 points already. Swift was a pure potential grab at the end of the 3rd. If he has a good TC or two he might be a good
spence simp account - I liked my draft. The trades I made before the draft? Eh! Loved the trade I made with the Cavs. That was massive for me. The trade with Habes was me being intoxicated with being in contact with him again and I lost. As far as the actual draft goes, I had an idea in mind to go big and go hard on defense. I'll be honest, I never really picked up the nuances of FBB. I still go off the letter grades. But thought that if I could play serious defense that I could piece together an offense and win 42 foreverrrrrrr. I really, really wanted McDyess and LaFraentz. I'm glad McDyess went before the pick I traded to Bulls when I moved up to grab Big Z in the 2nd round. That would have been a dick punch if Play took him. player...boom or bust. I would say my draft right now was a B with a strong chance of that being an A in a "lets look back at the creation draft 3 years later " article.
jr - Well that’s an easy one, Nuggets. A team with Shaq should put fear into everybody. I do think we match up well as long as Shaq doesn’t completely dominate DRob. I will make the playoffs barring a huge injury or two. I have a top team in the west although it has only been 11 games the +15 PPG differential tells a little something. Plus the West is trash only like 2 other solid teams. Gonna be easy the first few seasons for the west teams competing.
Covid - The only team I fear in my division and conference in general is the Utah Jazz. They have the guard play to outmatch me and David Robinson looks like he'll be able to have a fun battle with Shaq down low. As far as the playoffs, I think it's a no-brainer for me to make it. I have Shaq and a very old but solid supporting cast around him.
JAH - I fear no team in my division. Boston has a good future backcourt , Miami is a young team that I feel has less potential than my team, The Nets are old and lack any real stars , The Knicks are pretty much the Nets with MJ. MJ will probably retire, The Magic...well it will take a real good Magician to make that team relevant this decade, And the 76ers have a decent 1-2 scoring punch but do they really have much potential to improve over the next couple seasons?
spence simp account - Definitely the Nuggets. I just picture Shaq bodying Z all over the paint in my nightmares. I think the Jazz will fade, although D-Rob is nasty. If the T-Wolves make a move to add to VC I feel like they could be really good too. Pretty sure they were trying to tank around him lol? I'll make the playoff because the West is ass. And I'm fine with it!! Gotta make it past '03 and then tank my balls off.
jr - If you haven’t noticed I and a few others have been trying to get game in here. He is an old BBS gm and is very active. I have played with Game in these leagues for many years, also we did summer league together last year and was planning on this year too, but doesn’t look like Vegas will be open. Like I was saying he is a solid GM and will definitely be active and post DC's even make trades!
Covid -Game, he needs a team ASAP, he's a former BBS guy and has shown already that he can be very active. He's on the boards daily staying engaged and its only a matter of time before we get him in here.
JAH - Chipper. It is sad how he lost the Hawks. He has always seemed like a good guy to me. I don't really know many of the others I see on there.
spence simp account - I think the only person on the waitlist that I've had prolonged contact to is Game. He's a good dude. Pratt also seems like a good addition. He's been more active than half the real GMs. Also seems to know what he's doing so that's cool! And can we fire break yet? I mean the dude is a total loser.
jr - My biggest thing is dont look at their ratings. Well look but dont trust. Sims tell a lot more then their ratings. Thats why the test sim was so important for me when picking players. Also you dont have to trade. Most crumble when people keep offering guys to you or explain their theory. If you doubt making the move dont do it. I never trade just to trade unless its a frenzy always trade to either make my team better for what I am trying to do. Also mess with your DC some figure out what works best for your players, theres a lot you can do with the DC.
Covid - From what I've seen in this league, GM's can really make shit, look like gold. Be patient, ask the necessary questions, and don't sell off to the best buyer. Utilize the trade block and see multiple offers before trading right away.
JAH - Don't be afraid to experiment. Some players will suck with one DC and be way better with another. Don't give up and just trade everyone away cheap because of a bad sim. And do not overpay for someone because of a good sim!
Covid - I posted my dogs pick in the Hangin on a Saturday thread, but I have a month old Siberian Husky. Im a die hard 49ers fan, so his name is Niner. Smart little feller too, currently training him on silent hand signals. It's a pain in the ass, but he's very obedient and catching on nicely.
JAH - Cats. Dogs will turn on you if someone simply brings them a treat! That said I like both. I love most animals. They are more trustworthy than humans. Right now I have my cat Misty. Found her in the woods like 13 years ago when she was like 5 days old. Her mother probably dropped her while moving her kittens.
pence simp account - Definitely dogs. Family has owned Westies forever. Currently have one and she's a spitfire. No pictures because I'm not trying to doxx her on the internet. She deserves privacy!
jr - Honestly I think it went as it shouldve. It went as I had these players ranked. Shaq is obviously the best player in the file, but you dont pass up Kobe at his age or even Duncan. Then Shaq gets the nod over TMac or AI in my opinions. Now that I think about it AI shouldve went 4th to me. TMac just isnt a sure thing while you can se AI do his thing in Boston as we speak. Not much complaints about the top of the draft as much as later but thats a different story for a different time.
Covid - Me personally the only change I would make to the top 5 would be to swap Mcgrady and Vince Carter. Mcgrady a bit younger, but in terms of offensive and defensive abilities Vince Carter is more well-rounded and seems like the obvious choice there.
JAH - I think Iverson should have been 4th. Other than that it seemed to go how I expected. Kind of hard to mess up a top 5 pick.
Covid - If Kobe could stop talking about Kenny Thomas I'd really appreciate that. Buddy is already in his prime and isn't a player you really want to invest in with RC's and AC's. I don't know if hyping him for a later sell is his tactic or if he really believes. Its annoying to hear at this point though.
JAH - DJ Strawberry was a Terp so we have to allow him to be discussed. And I do still have my autographed Starbury shoe that I got at Steve and Barrys god knows how many years ago. So I'll say Steve Smith. However this also ties into noob advice. Don't buy into it when Habes and Kobe overhype their players!
spence simp account - Is both an option. I'd outlaw Starbury though. At least Habes is funny when he talks Steve Smith, who I hear is averaging 50 ppg/36 and is only going for an '02 1st? That's a steal in my book boys! Wish I had a first to offer!
Covid - I don't think it will be tough at all. The guys that are expiring for the most part will be solid depth, but I don't see many game changers being available in the first offseason. My biggest concern however is how many teams are willing to blow through the salary cap on long term deals for such players. It is going to be interesting in that aspect, but shouldn't be dificult.
JAH - I don't think it will be tough. I mean the top 150 guys do not expire. It will be the weakest FA class in the leagues history.
spence simp account - The only players expiring are trash people on the end of benches. It actually sucks for tanking teams, though, because they can't hope to hang on to those really unpolished A/B potential guys they took in, say, the 10th round (unless they extend them through new rule). I actually think it'll make for a very interesting FA. People will have to do their homework and hope to strike gold on a flier if they need to fill a hold in their rotation.
Covid -Based off current rosters, like previously stated. Lakers GM is my early favorite for CY. He drafted young and is commited to the tank, but the young guys he drafted aren't going to be more than role players in this league. I'm predicting he will tank 3 years and than have to trade all his youth to attempt a CY save. Frustrating times in Los Angeles.
JAH - Magic. They will have to hit it big in FA in 3 years.
spence simp account - Way too early to tell for tanking teams. Gotta see what happens next two years. But I'd say break is in trouble because he literally doesn't know that he needs to do a DC so that seems like a problem. Also any team that's trying to win, but isn't currently? So maybe like Cavaliers? I feel like if you can't win with KG and Webber you might be in trouble.
Covid -Honestly, I was one of the GM's that traded their first for a first rounder in the creation draft. It was a high risk move that ultimately played out. Acquiring multiple 1st round creation picks has its benefits early on, it allows you to set the pace of the league and forces the hand on other GM's to follow suit and keep up. I really think we had a very active creation draft, there were multiple trades daily.
JAH - I mean for me neither. If I were a team that had a top 10 creation pick I would clearly trade 3 1sts for another creation 1st rounder. 3 non lotto first are not worth a lot.
spence simp account -Well neither of these deals feels like good value, but if I had a high first round pick in the creation then I would trade future firsts to get back into the 1st round of the creation. I feel like Ashes/Darrel missed an opportunity there. Could have built around Kobe/Duncan, but chose to sit tight. To be clear, I would not have traded 3 firsts to get back in, I'm just saying they should have done some sort of deal.
jr - I feel attacked by this question hue. Nah I am gong to get my teaching credential whenever this corona virus lifts. Need one more class to get my bachelors a mistake on my part and finincial aids part put me back because of finincial reasons, but honestly who cares. I live life to the fullest each day. Do what I want and i am ok lol. What is supposed to happen will happen is my motto.
Covid -No college for me , however I do got 12 years and counting in the Navy. Joined picked the job I wanted to do and regretting it at all.
JAH - Well I went into the Air Force at 18. So I got my degree while working in the same field. That said I don't work in that field anymore. I did for like 13 years.
spence simp account -My bachelor's is in sport management and my master's is in accounting, and I'm currently an auditor. So the bachelor's is useless lol. I did work for the Buffalo Bisons for a few years, but hated sales and wanted to cash a bigger check without snapping my neck, ya know? Happy where I'm at now. Might move on from auditing soon. It's a draining field with long hours, but I'm good for a bit longer. I work mostly with not for profits so its a teeny tiny bit rewarding. But yeah few more years of experience and then it's on to a mid-six figures job where I don't do anything and leave at 3 every day.
jr - I dont think any rules that are not posted should be added, unless we will limit the bigs that play the perimeter in this league. Its not a big deal to me, I like something different. Most leagues I have been in have strict positional rules and this makes it interesting. Hearing how Curry should go top 10 in this draft is hilarious so yeah keep the rules in place so more nonsense can spew out of a certain somebody.
Covid --I brought this up before, and its not really a rule that'll affect competitiveness, but its 2020 and I would like to see Podcast added to ACs. Writing articles is a bit extra due to the strict criticism here. Recording a quick 5-7 Minute podcast, sure its faster than typing, but you'll be able to touch on so many more different topics. It just seems to me like the correct thing to add to a league.
JAH - No post pads. Its just annoying watching 18 people run macros over and over and then like 4 other poor fools not know they exist and try to keep up.
spence simp account -I'm always in favor for less rules. We're all busy and we can't pay attention to the smallest rules anymore. I like freedom in the DC. Obviously, the PG rule is needed, but other than I say let it rip. I think AC's need to be reformed so that Spence is final say on grades. Too many friends handing out 5's around here for literal drivel.
Covid -No sir, great questions here, and good luck to you rest of the season.
spence simp account -1. How big is your hog? 2. Can I ride it this summer when I'm in Charlotte?
How long have you been addicted to esport leagues?
jr- Well not sure if fantasy counts for this. I started fantasy baseball back in 7th grade lol. As far simulating leagues since about 2008 right before I went to college. Didn’t play much during college cus I hooped for the them, but after that I couldn’t stop lmao. So I've been doing it for 12 years but really addicted for 10 with a few breaks cus of personal life. Shit Happens.
Covid -I started dabbling with FBB back in 2008/2009 time frame. Found the leagues through our fellow Jazz GM JR. Started off not knowing what I was doing, but at the time I started there were 3-4 FBB leagues starting everyday so I was quickly able to learn the game. It was around 2010 I believe when I decided I wanted to run my own leagues so I created the brand Topflight, and like BBS we've had our share of diff versions, but still going strong today.
A true gt.
How would you rate your own draft? Do you regret not taking anyone else that was drafted after you picked in the first 3 rounds?
jr - My draft was actually very solid.
Covid - The first three rounds, I don't have any complaints about my draft, I was able to acquire KG and CWebb and quickly flipped both for Shaq and a 2nd who was eventually Mcdyess. My only regret from the draft was trading Hakeem for Rasual Butler in the 5th round. Its not that I dont like Butler, but John Stockton was picked immediately after my pick and that's a guy I targeted early, but for some odd reason thought he was gone.
Which team do you fear the most in your Division? Are you confidant you will make the playoffs? Why or why not?
jr - Well that’s an easy one, Nuggets. A team with Shaq should put fear into everybody. I do think we match up well as long as Shaq doesn’t completely dominate DRob. I will make the playoffs barring a huge injury or two. I have a top team in the west although it has only been 11 games the +15 PPG differential tells a little something.
And yeah I don't feel confidant I'll make the playoffs. Don't think a why not is needed
spence simp account - Definitely the Nuggets. Which GM on the waitlist are you looking forward the most to replacing a GM here, and why?
jr - If you haven’t noticed I and a few others have been trying to get game in here.
For those of you that FBB is in your DNA are there any tips or tricks you would care to share with the noob owners?
jr - My biggest thing is dont look at their ratings.
And do not overpay for someone because of a good sim!
spence simp account - Yeah this question was not meant for me. I know to get blocks, limit turnovers from your PG, play big on the wings, and that's about it. I'm more here for the luls than to win a championship. And to reunite with the NC crew, which I'm definitely apart of regardless of what anyone in the NC crew says.
Are you on the side of good (dog person) or Evil (cats)? Willing to share a picture and their name?
jr - I have a dog love that dog so loyl. His name is Melo no need to explain that in a basketball sim league, if I do you're a lost man. I would share a picture maybe in the thread Im answering these questions before Ive drank my coffee so maybe if I remember to upload one.
Of the top 5 picks for the creation draft what order do you think they should have gone in, and was someone not drafted in the top 5 that should have been?
jr - Honestly I think it went as it shouldve.
Kind of hard to mess up a top 5 pick.
spence simp account - Can't go wrong with Kobe. Dude is averaging 35 on 50% shooting. Unreal. HOWEVER, bigs win 'ships. I thought it would have went 1. Duncan, 2. Shaq, 3. Kobe, 4. McGrady, 5. KG/Dirk. Nothing wrong with what happened though.
If you could outlaw a conversation about a single player would it be no more Steve Smith, or no more Strawberry? (for clarification word auto corrected this and it was Starbury)
jr - Who the fuck is strawberry? Im so confused you said player then proceeded to name a fruit. Darryl or DJ arent in this league so I guess Im going to have to go with Steve Smith. Is he even much better then Derek Anderson on my squad? I mean he isnt bad but this Mavs GM is acting like hes Ray Allen or something.
How tough do you think the offseason will be with so many contracts expiring?
jr - It wont be tough, most people will be attached to their guys, and offer them their cap space. This offseason isnt even a big one for me it would be next offseason since I didnt extend Bobby or Scot. Either way it works out, might get some player movement, the rookies only being on 3 year deals might pay off for people with cap that offseason.
Which team GM looks like it will be in the most trouble come 03 and the contract year based off current roster?
jr - The Rockets, yes he is in the playoffs now, but that wont hold up. Dude is a trash GM unless he gets gifts he will be in the lotto forever. I wonder if thats how long game will have to wait for a team. Wait for ahsan to get CY'd yikes. Rockets have no talent outside of Marion and he is a non option defensive guy. Sucks to suck but at least his name aint chuck.
Which would you do, trade 3 #1 for a player taken in the 1st round in the creation, or trade your 1st rounder for 3 future firsts?
jr - I would do the first with the team I have. We are true competitors in the west as far as im concernec. If I could get an upgrade at PF or PG I really think I could make some noise. We will see though. Doubt I move many firsts in this league only because camping is rewarded more than potential and if the league is this active I will continue to write articles and max camp all my guys.
If you have a bachelor’s degree, do you work in the field you planned to while you were going to school for said degree?
jr - I feel attacked by this question hue.
Are there any additional rules you wish Spencer had in place, and why?
jr - I dont think any rules that are not posted should be added, unless we will limit the bigs that play the perimeter in this league.
Do you have any questions for me, and what are they?
jr - Yeah I have a question for you, why did you join an FBB league so late if you have never played it? Seems like a good idea until you get sucked in and spend your free time on this shit. I mean you are older so you dont go out eating ass every weekend. Thanks for thinking of me when sending out the pm for this though. Stay stafe out there and always wear a mask.
Brianh – Well I was very late to the online sim leagues, as I didn’t join one till 2014. In 1990 (I turned 21 and started clubbing) there wasn’t such a thing, and from that point till 2012 my driving passion was going out and finding a girl that would make a mistake in judgment and take me home for a night or two. Once I joined the first league, I found another where kobe and game kept talking about this fbb league Spencer use to run and how they wanted him to do it again. Over the years I’ve gotten to know Spence’s online personality, and have found him to be one of the best spirits out there and so when he posted he was doing this, I was “FUCK YA I’ll try”
Covid -No sir, great questions here, and good luck to you rest of the season.
JAH -Can you name the college where any of the players your team played ball at?
BrianH – only Perkins, he is from the way back time machine when I was an avid watcher and he went to chapel. Never been a huge collage fan. Michael, Worthy and Larry, I know where they all went
spence simp account -1. How big is your hog? 2. Can I ride it this summer when I'm in Charlotte?
BrianH it’s an 01 that was decked out as a 02 CVO with the 95 and has a limited edition paint job (only 150 were sold), if I still had my other I would let ya ride it, but this is my brothers that I bought from his widow. Too much sentimental value, sorry ☹ but we will have beer together 😊
Since I asked about other people pets, It only seems fair that the cute little girl gets to show off how cut she is, she knows her daddy wont let her get doxxed
I want to thank Covid, JAH, JR, and Erbes for helping me on this. A lot of insight for the noob to FBB and also had a few laughs reading a few of the replies
