Offseason Impressions
And other random thoughts with no actual research to back them up
And other random thoughts with no actual research to back them up
The offseason is upon us and boy did it come quickly! (Erbes ) I'm pretty bored at work right now so I've just been flipping through stuff and drawing my own opinions on the flurry of moves/picks and the implications they will have. Here's the catch: I have zero access to rosters/FA pool right now! I'm going to eyeball some stuff and throw out a bunch of opinions on all sorts of random things that should be taken as gospel, so get ready fellas!
Brandon Roy is not that big of a deal. I'd rather have PJ Tucker! I think the Bucks gave up way too much for Roy, and it seems like he thought so too. So why do it! Value-wise, maybe it's okay, but you basically did what trading for Tim Duncan can do to a franchise...except you got Brandon Roy instead of Timmy D! Speaking of Tim Duncan, I think he is officially no longer the dude! Kevin Garnett obliterated the entire playoffs, including my team! I beat the Cavaliers pretty handily last Finals and dominated them in the regular season. Their team was largely the same! What was the difference? KG and his steroids! The word on the street was assistant-GM @lumley316 gave KG some of "Michael's secret stuff" before the playoffs to secure victory. First drafting Salim Stoudemire and now this? Best AGM ever.
Skillz traded for Chauncey Billups again. Have you seen this, have you heard about this? At first glance, I hated this deal for Stevie B but then I thought about it a little more. He got the Grizzlies 07 which is basically Kevin Durant because the Grizzlies are getting CY'd! More on that later. Skillz never ceases to amaze me with his perpetual frenzy style of GMing. It's crazy how circular some of the deals he makes are. I think an interesting articles would be to see how often the same players pass to and from New York. Just seems like a fun little exercise. I'm not doing it.
What is greeme going to do? I'm not going to lie, I have no idea what's on his team other than David West and Tony Allen but I'm just going to say that isn't good! I honestly think the Nets may be in a worse position than the Bucks but probably still better than the Grizzlies. If West leaves in FA next year, greeme is in pretty bad shape! How do you pronounce greeme? Is it "gree-me" or like dream with a g? I'm not ashamed to say I have no idea and pronounce it "gree-me." Keeping on that line of though, I still pronounce habes (@aaronjh ) like rabies with an 'h'. It just feels right. Kind of like keeping the lower case 'h' in harold.
I think there is finally a changing of the guard in the league. While I'm not going anywhere in terms of trying to win games, I don't think I'll make a fifth straight finals appearance. I also think the Cavaliers may finally re-tool/rebuild as well. I'm expecting a lot from the Bulls and the Jazz. Look for the Pacers out East as well. Ben Wallace has his 6/6 Finals streak to keep up! Play and JR are my picks to take over the reigns this season. Should be a fun year!
Who knew Mark was born under a lucky star with a horseshoe up his ass? First Chris Paul, an absolute stud, then the defiling of Erbes for Dwight Howard, and now the man jumps in the lotteryagain and grabs LaMarcus Aldridge. Now I think he missed out on the true superstar, PJ Tucker, but LMA is still damn solid. I think the real play is to trade LMA for a stud, which seems like the intended direction. I think Howard, Paul plus a ready star player can probably already make noise in the West. Plus, I do have some concerns that LMA ends up like Pau Gasol, not a bad player, but a disappointment given expectations.
The Heat tore things down fast! Pretty crazy given the fact that they had a really good team that just struggled with injuries. I feel like this was possibly out of frustration, but obviously the allure of Kevin Durant and controlling the tank is a big opportunity here. I personally enjoy winning more than tanking for the chance of a superstar (I'm sure most do) and I really think the Heat could've been a dangerous team this upcoming season, but sadly we will never know. Is it worth even talking about the Knicks anymore? I don't even think they'll bring this team into Day 1! Skillz is always going to win 50+ games and be in the playoffs, but I think he is a crapshoot when it comes to actual true contender teams. I'd love to see him actually stick with a bona fide championship-level squad, rather than these "puncher's chance" teams he's been assembling the last few seasons. Marty Andrushfdijgskfakfndfns sucks! He is a leftover FA! Big Country was able to do the shit he's doing a few seasons back. Just stop! I'm actually not sure what the East shapes up to be this season. The Bulls, Knicks, and Pacers should be in the mix and obviously the Cavaliers will be up there, just depends on the direction they go after trading Keith Van Horn finally. Von has given up this season, right? I think so. Sixers have dropped out as well. The Wizards will win regular season games, I suppose. Assuming they don't lose Udonis Haslem. Who am I forgetting? Oh damn, the Magic! They look pretty solid. They have AI, Maggette, and Al Jeff right? Not sure what else they have going for them, but I like the moves so far. Who knows what GAME and the Raptors end up doing. I'm sure he'll try to win then give up after a few sims, as per usual! I probably missed some teams, but I think I discussed the relevant ones.
Moving on to the West, my team is definitely taking a step back after moving Ben Wallace. I'm still expecting to win 50 games and be in the playoff mix, but I'm definitely in a little transition phase. It'll be nice to switch things up a bit. Jazz are definitely the favorites out West now, and I expect them to be better than last season. Mavericks are always good, but I think harold gets in his own way too much. I fully expect him to make some wild moves early on, be an average team most of the year, then come out blazing Day 99. Get it together, @aaronjh ! Stick with something! Overall, the West got worse this year, which bodes well for the Grizzlies facing their contract year, but I think they are still trash! Fix your shit ya bum! I think the Blazers, Suns, and Spurs all need new directions, but at least the Suns are transitioning a bit. Blazers are trying! The grabbed Vince Carter but I still feel like their squad just doesn't cut it. @ukfanjohn is a mess! He's filling out his roster with min contracts and rolling with the punches! Good luck friend! Speaking of friends, my friendly rival Nanz is just a lost puppy nowadays. Like I said, I can't access rosters and I'm sad to say I have no idea what nanz has on the Lakers but I think it's pretty bad! Does he have his pick this season? He's probably somehow close to the HC still. Oh he has Carmelo Anthony right? Maybe if he has a big TC and nanz can magically assemble some nice, young assets, he can finally get Kobe Bryant! The Sonics are still bad but not bad enough to full on tank, but why does that matter amirite? Mark will just jump in the lotto from like #10 or something! Honestly, I could see them making a lower seed in the West at this point, especially with some solid moves. They are in such a low-risk situation, it's amazing. Warriors make me really sad. I hate to see a franchise tank for 3 years, barely scrape through the CY, then go back into another 2-3 year tank. Such a shame. I hope Outlawz makes some more time.
Let's talk some more about the draft. My big steal is Randy Foye. We all know how guys can turn out with +24's to their offense, and that's pretty much all you are going to pump up for Foye. I think he is going to be a really nice scorer! PJ Tucker is going to be the best player from the draft, I've mentioned him plenty of times already. If he has any improvement in TC at all, I think he becomes a superstar with camps. You're a weird dude Spencer ! I wanted Renaldo Balkman for the chance he does 2+ blocks at PF. I think his viability really hinges on that fact, because I doubt he has much potential. I was planning on camping his Strength, Blocking, and Rebounding and sustaining him that way at PF. If he's close to a 1 BPG guy, I think he is pretty meh. Kyle Lowry probably ends up really good. Should be a nice way to start off the second act of "Tanking the Musical: A manas tale." JJ Redick went way too high in my opinion. I think he is a trial run for Stephen Curry. I think Spencer is testing how much a guy will score with like C A+ ratings, with a bit lower inside. The answer is: still not that much! I'm rambling here because Spencer even acknowledged he is a back-up, but I still think he had a hidden objective here! Rajon Rondo is a polarizing prospect for me. I would never support a PG that can't shoot, but FBB is dumb and PGs explode all the time! Please don't let this guy be good, I don't want to see any Skillz'ing. Wait does Skillz still have him? Marquinhos Vieira sucks! JJ Barea will be the best JJ in the league. Lou Amundson was guy I kind of wanted, but already had similar type guys. He is probably going to be a really solid big man with an outside shot at being a good starter on the right team. Also, excellent job with the draft Galo , Skillz , and Play ! So fast! To be fair, the draft was pretty ass so it should go quickly, but man I'm still amazed at how excited the league gets for draft time in the offseason. Cool stuff!
Writing this at work isn't easy! I'm gambling with my very sanity here, because I'm typing straight into the browser and if I lose everything at this point, I'll probably punch my monitor! I'm excited to see my Kings this season. It's been so long since I've been able to go into Training Camp eagerly waiting for development. My guys have been pretty solidified for the last three or four seasons. I'll be honest, I don't like the moves I made, but I finally got bored of keeping the same team together. We do this thing for fun! I think I could've fielded the same team for the next two or three seasons with a lot of success, but man I miss TCs and camps! I'm going to make Rudy Gay into a star, Andrea Bargnani into Dirk without rebounding, and Amir Johnson into a solid ass big! Ilyasova has his fate in his own hands. If he has a big TC, I think he might actually be stud with camps. Otherwise, he's probably a back-up. I like that him and Amir are super young, always love that outside shot at improving in potential!
Can we finally get rid of 5 day sims! I'll take no night sims for never having to see another 5 day sim! Down with 5 days!
I want to throw some props at Royal , Go Niners , and JR for the podcast! I genuinely enjoy these and have listened to all of them in their entirety! I'm actually one of the few who wishes the last couple were longer, but maybe that's because I am alone with no other hobbies right now. Plus I love podcasts! It's super fun to see here and I hope you guys keep it up! Great job!
I'm running out of bigger topics to discuss at this point, so I'm just going to throw some last few random thoughts out there. footy should trade Andrew Bynum and PJ Tucker. I hope erbes hops back on the wait list after he gets CY'd. I'm going to miss him! The Nuggets and Rockets are complete messes! Your podcast is great! Your teams are not! Game, trade me Yao Ming! Lasagna and tears of failure I hate your team. Sorry bud. Kris Humphries is a dang stud. Let's see this TC! Over/Under 7.5 NC Crew trades this season! I'm taking the under, call me crazy! I think Haslem and Paccelis change teams in Free Agency! I think we close the book on Andre Iguodala this TC. LeBron James wins the MVP this season! Aaaand I'm done!
Thanks for stopping by, friends.
