Tons of deals today yall. Let's see how everyone shakes out. Hopefully I didn't miss any (only did deals posted today). Hardest part was accumulating who went where. Spence, how the hell do you sim. This was a nightmare. Let's go!
Spurs:
In: LaMarcus Aldridge, Jeff Foster, Shandon Anderson, Brendan Haywood, Jawad Williams, Rashard Lewis, Mark Blount, Jackson Vroman, Salim Stoudamire. SA 2007 + SA 2008, LAL 2007, SEA 2007, IND 2007, ORL 2008, POR 2008, DET 2009, Cavs 2007 First (Top 20 Protected**) **becomes Cavs 2008 2nd + Cavs 2009 2nd
Out: TMac, Jamal Crawford, Alonzo Mourning, Ron Mercer, Mbenga
John blew up his entire team today and it was long overdue. LMA is the only real player asset that he got, but I think starting your rebuild with the #2 pick (could have been PJ Tucker, people forget that) is just fine. What’s that, 9 firsts? That’s sick. He was in a weird spot – two legitimate superstar players who still had elite value, but a team that was completely mediocre and capped out. LMA + all of his picks + an assortment of futures (none really jump off the page except for DET 2009, sorry Galo) is fantastic, as at least one of those picks will eventually have real value. Something always happens. He’s set up.
So why the F? This was all way too difficult. John seems like a super nice dude but I cannot believe how tentative he was on a direction shift that seemed inevitable/obvious. This whole thing should have taken 45 minutes and have been done last week. It was incredibly obvious that this was the absolute best route for him to go, and it took way too much time to convince on a really basic direction shift. Huge pain in my ass! Held me up at the end on Ron Mercer! F. Love your setup though, I think the rebuild is going to go great.
Grade: A in reality, F in my heart
Cavs:
In: Ron Mercer
Out: Mark Blount, Jackson Vroman, Salim Stoudamire. Cavs 2007 First (Top 20 Protected**) **becomes Cavs 2008 2nd + Cavs 2009 2nd
Not much here but Mercer is on a super cheap contract and is actually pretty good. Nice add for what is probably two seconds. Low TPG too
Grade: A
Pacers:
In: Alonzo Mourning
Out: Jeff Foster, Shandon Anderson, Brendan Haywood, Pacers 2007
Sargo started the day by going $35M over the hard cap trying to get expirings for Zo, but he eventually got himself under. I initially didn’t like the idea of dealing anything of value for someone making so much money, but Ahsan (maybe it was JR or Royal) made a good point on their pod. Zo is probably going to retire before he’s a zero on that contract, and the guy is still nasty. I’m not familiar enough with Sargo’s cap, but if he can afford him for the next 2-3 seasons without having to do anything shitty then it's a pretty legit and cheap add. His FC is insane.
Grade: B+
Kings:
In: Ricky Davis
Out: Rudy Gay, Ersan Ilyasova, Sarunas Jasikevicius, Troy Murphy
I hate ashes as much as the next guy does but this was a great trade. Ricky is a superstar. I’m really curious why Play didn’t like him, because this seems like 50 cents on the dollar and out of character for the Chicago tandem. Ashes was probably getting bored with his core, and the Ricky/Kobe duo can still absolutely win the title. Fantastic deal. Hate to see it happen.
Grade: A
Bulls:
In: Rudy Gay, Ersan Ilyasova, Sarunas Jasikevicius, Troy Murphy
Out: Ricky Davis
This one confused me. Like I said above, I’m genuinely curious why Play/Insane didn’t like Ricky, because on the surface he seems like a tier 2 superstar, and this didn’t strike me as a tier 2 superstar package. I love that Lou Williams is about to be unleashed, but I think there was a better package out there for Ricky. Maybe not. I do like Rudy a lot. If he doesn’t have TPG issues then he’ll develop into a great wing. He’s never been in a sim league and not started with high potential, and those ratings are already good.
Grade: C
Mavs:
In: Jamal Crawford, Bobby Simmons, Gary Payton, Nenad
Out: Andrei Kirilenko, Jawad Williams, Khalid El-Amin, Nduidi Ebi. SA 08, ORL 08, POR 08, Bulls 2008 1st, Mavericks 2009 1st . Philly 08
The Crawford trade was amazing. Feels like there is a good prospect missing from his side but there isn’t. Habes did a great job waiting John out and knowing that once TMac was gone, he’d have to come calling for the 2008. I think Crawford gets slept on a bit because John isn’t the type to constantly scream about his boxes, but the guy is amazing. The only thing that is imperfect is that both Crawford and Wade need to be at PG to maximize their value, but whatever. Value play to go get Crawford and an obvious one. I also like Nenad. Contract is heavy but that’s the going rate on excellent stock/rebounding/low volume bigs. And getting out of KEA by giving up a useless Bulls pick and his own will open up moves in the next week or two. Good stuff.
Grade: A
Rockets:
In: Khalid El-Amin, Nduidi Ebi, Gerald Wallace, Eric Snow. Bulls 2008 1st. Mavericks 2009 1st
Out: Bobby Simmons. Gary Payton. Ron Artest
Ahsan did exactly what he should be doing. Took on KEA for two picks. Dealt for the tank god, Eric Snow. And I get taking a shot on GWall given the tank. Artest is really good but he is what he is. Maybe GWall becomes something more. Worth a shot. And if he wants to, he can run fast and jack GWall’s TOs up. Not an A day because it was pretty standard, but he did a great job. Also unrelated, the roundtrip on VC was beautiful.
Grade: B+
Pistons:
In: Andrei Kirilenko, Kenny Thomas, Bobby Simmons, Hakim Warrick, Brandon Bass, Bucks 08 2nd
Out: Rashard Lewis, Detroit 2009, Rasheed Wallace
TD’s window is only so wide so I get it from that perspective, but I do think one of these picks is going to eventually cost Galo Arenas. It might not be this one, but if it isn’t, it’s the 2010. Kinda think it’s the 2009 though. Maybe it’s worth it to try and get a ring, but I don’t think this gets him there
Originally gave him a B- but I missed the Sheed deal. Actually kind of like this. He had Sheed and Shard, is that true? Shitty contracts. Maybe I’m wrong, maybe he didn’t have both. Anyway, he seems to have good flexibility now and didn’t have to take on anything brutal to get off of Sheed, someone who I would have assumed had negative value. Pretty good job overall.
Grade: B
Nets/Blazers:
What was this deal exactly lol. There’s some type of weird subjective tradeback tied to Raef’s TC or something. I’m not going to figure it out. Last time Don did something like this, Pig blew a gasket because Don bowled over the line. Smokey this is not ‘Nam, this is bowling. There are rules.
Grade: N/A
Bucks:
In: Rasheed Wallace
Out: Kenny Thomas, Bobby Simmons, Hakim Warrick, Brandon Bass, Bucks 08 2nd
Tough to grade. Andy’s in a tough spot. I still think the way to play this was to accumulate as many assets as possible, punt 2007, tank in 2008, blow it up for 42 in 2009 (without harming flexibility or dealing future picks), and then rebuild properly as we know he can. But given that he went the scorched earth option, I kind of get it.
Grade: C+
76ers:
In: Ronald Murray, Philly 2008
Out: Nenad, ORL 2008
Sure. He had no choice. It’s hard to get your picks back, and he was fortunate that the person who had his pick values Nenad. I don’t think everyone does. This deal was fine.
