Welcome to the first 2008 installment of Back to the Future Roundtable: Part I! I am your host, Johnny B Good Stamos and today we are joined by Don, Habes, Ahsan and Steve! We had Big Lumz as one of the guest in the show but as you know... things didn't work out! It happens! LOL
YOU KNOW WHAT WE SAY AROUND HERE! SAY IT WITH ME! BBS is a big part of our pasts and thanks to big Spence, now our futures! LETS GET TO IT!
1. Lets first start off with the state of the league. It looks like activity has been slowing down and people seem to think things are a bit rough… Where do you think the league currently stands and are you at all worried about its future?
Don - Hey, I gotta be honest. Last couple of weeks looked awful imo. The league was slow, trades weren't happening, and people really seemed annoyed with one another. Or maybe that was just in my world? lol, lately though, once the off-season hit, things are buzzing! Trades are happening, Lumley quit, voids left and right, Spencer is laying down the LAW! Gotta love. BBS IS BACK BABY! Not worried about it right now. I think we're in a good place with everything.
Habes: Things are good again. I think a lot of people had personal gripes that they’re getting over, and Spence being busy is bad for morale. On that note, Royal’s an absolute genius for this double sim My Player bonus. Reno and Gary, baby! They fuck! I’m not worried. I’m married and I love my wife.
Ahsan: Huh? Activity has been through the roof and the league has been wild over the past couple of days. We got the draft done in a few hours, Lumley was hired and fired, Eli is here now. Worried? The only thing worrying is that I am in my CY and might be forced to leave this fun. This is still my favorite league out there and by far the most active one I'm in and my #1. Not all worried, very enthused if I do survive this.
Steve:I don’t think you can expect the league activity to always be at an insanely high clip. Recently...things look back to normal with the whole Lums situation. But yeah, I think people giving out bad contracts and being up tight against the HC make trading a little bit more difficult. In saying that, and I already said it somewhere on the boards, I don’t think we need to trade all the friggin time to validate why we are doing this either. Some of us are not working from home like we were earlier which also affects your league activity. I know that when I get back to teaching again, I will not be able to spend the crazy amount of time that I do on here. I think we should expect that to be a thing, and be okay with that. Right now...BBS is thriving. Such a great league...thanks to Spencer!
2. On that note, is there anything in particular that you think is hurting the league? Too many podcasts and finally putting a face to peoples name? Erbes being a big baby ? Kobe complaining about players not matching their real stats LOL? Tell it how it is!
Don - I have to say the constant complaining is the biggest issue for me. It is just so played out and boring. We get it, you don't like the ratings of some players or how they panned out but that is what playing sim leagues is all about. I get it though that people do it just to talk so whatever. I usually try to avoid those conversations because it's Spencer's league and he's going to create the players how he sees fit! I am fine with that. Podcasts are fun for the league. I was against them to start but think it's a good idea. Some of them are way too long and I don't watch much but I like seeing what those boys are up too. Erbes? pass on commenting!
Habes: -Love the pods. Love Ahsan. Kobe was a huge baby but he’ll stop now that he’s competing. LOL nah he drafted Kevin Love so that should be enough to end BBS. It was fun, but remember: I’m married.
Ahsan: I love the podcasts. Meeting Steve was fun, watching Galo was cool. Erbes been quiet lately, hopefully he returns to his happy self soon. Feel like Kobe helps the league in terms of activity even if everyone disagrees with him, just keeps the conversation going. Honestly, not sure what dip in activity you are referring to. I'm highly confused as this has been insanely active...We just got 2 ACs on post pads!
Steve: Me personally I didn’t particularly like how the whole Lumley situation was handled but no point in going into that. I made my thoughts known. We need the NC crew to put together a podcast if ya ask me! That would be fun! Lold @ the erbes being a big baby question! Kobe has and always will be annoying until everything goes his way TC-wise and even then he would probably complain about some scrub not blowing up! In the end, I love everyone here...except Andy! Once he deals me Roy, we’ll be cool again!
3. Lets get to business! Welcome Lumley to the league! After a long stint on the wait list, he is finally back into the starting line up! As a welcome gift for the new GM, tell Lumz what you would do if you were the new Magic GM! And Lums, tell us how excited you are to be joining the big leagues and what do you look forward to the most!
Don - Welcome Lumz lol. uhhhh...line! Lumley, Lumley, Lumley, when are you going to find whatever the hell it is you're looking for. Listen, Lums, nice guy I think when you boil it down but he makes some silly mistakes. Always has. Might just have too much going on right now and I get it. Spencer maybe should have supervised his team with him for a month, IDK. But he should have tore it down and got both firsts back, I think we can all agree on that. I don't like the way all of that was handled tbh. But on the flip side, none of this would have been known and another situation probably would have blown up down the road with him. So i guess it's good we got ahead of it? lol...
Habes: Ah.
Ahsan: 8 seasons on the waitlist, 24 hours of GMing. Never seen anything like it. He traded Jamal Crawford for a pile of dogshit, traded Ben Wallace to TWO different teams (both posted and for some reason, both accepted by Lumley). Honestly, I like him as a person and it was sad to see him go as he has been a major part of the league over the past several months (without having a team). Funny guy, will be missed. I hope he learned from this however. He needs to be decisive and stop trying to please everyone.
Steve:WOOHOO! WELCOME BACK LUMS!...FUCK! Like seriously that’s how long his reign lasted I feel like...I wish Lums was here or the environment would be more accepting...sucks. The new GM getting those picks back were probably the best move if it was there...I think we all kind of agreed with that path towards optimal success.
4. We just witness the incredible upset pulled by the Cavs taking down the Mavs… how shocked were you and did you think it was possible LOL. Do you think the Cavs were just a bad match up or one of those weird FBB things? If Spence re-simmed the series 10 times, how many times do you think the Cavs would pull the upset?
Don - I was very shocked to see that Mavs were upset. I think the Mavs and Sonics were the two best teams last season and I stand by that comment! Not just because they're my good friends but they had really elite squads. I think it is another one of those weird FBB situations like how I beat the Jazz in the first round..... Shouldn't be surprised though. Anything is possible when it comes to the FBB playoffs. Wacky shit happens all the time. In the end though he had a good squad too and Dirk and STEVE FRANCIS? carried them to the ship. Hell of a 7 game series.
Habes: Shut the fuck up already! You know what the first thing I did when I lost in seven to the bum ass Cavs was? I went upstairs and said hunny, I just lost in seven to the Cavs. I can’t see straight, I think I might be having a panic attack. And you know what my wife said to me? She said I’m five months pregnant and our daughter just shat through her diaper. And you know what I said back? I said I have to go downstairs and rebuild. I’ll see you tomorrow.
Ahsan: You know, it's hard to tell. The Mavericks had a great team but the Cavaliers were able to make adjustments down 1-2 and match up. Steve Francis really stepped up, Dirk was Dirk. I think if it were redone, maybe Habes would have made some adjustments to try to exploit the Cavaliers weaknesses moreso. But it was a fun series and congrats to the Cavaliers as well as the Mavericks on great seasons.
Steve: I was pretty shocked...to a degree. FBB is always random as hell and ya truly never know. Once you get to the finals, you typically have a solid chance of winning because you found a DC that is working well or you have the personnel to alter your DC and change it based on the matchup. In saying all of that, I really did think the Mavs were going to win pretty easily, though. If you resim that series I’d say the Mavs would’ve won 8 out of 10 times...but they didn’t win the series that mattered so it was a moot point!
5. Speaking of the Mavs… they are now joining the race for Steph and tearing down the dynasty! Do you think it is now the Sonics’ time to shine? Are they by far the favorite to win next year? If not, who do they think challenges from the west and the east?
Don - I think the Sonics are definitely favorites in the West. Just from my above comments you could have guessed that. The Jazz are definitely close and right behind them. They added Haslem who will be a big addition to their frontcourt. Mark still has an elite squad though. I think it will be the Sonics and Jazz and then after that it's anyone's guess. Spurs, Warriors, Rockets are a few team that come to mind.
Habes: The Sonics don’t look like a lock to me, but they’re the best team and there aren’t many threats. Let’s be honest. The league is full of dopes with middling rebuilds who are too scared to go get vets and win. Do you know how easy it’d be to land guys like Billups, Iverson, KG, DD, Ray, and Kidd right now? Kudos to Jeb for putting his chips in and landing Khalid El-Amin though. Dickhead. I don’t think it’d be hard to challenge Seattle and Utah, but I doubt anyone goes for it. Even the Bulls would rather rebuild than go for vets despite being on the tier 1 bubble.
Ahsan: The Sonics are the favorite. Feel like if the Jazz can get another major piece around Kobe/LeBron, they are scary. Love what the Kings have been doing as well as the Spurs adding Dirk is quite scary. As far as the East goes, with the Bulls saying they're tearing it down, the Cavs trading away Dirk and going young, I feel like the biggest threat is the Knicks. They are such a wildcard because the roster they have today will not be the roster they have tomorrow. They make so many moves and always find ways to build great teams. Feel like they are a legit title threat as well.
Steve: Mark has obviously done a wonderful job as I’ve said a million times already and he’s absolutely the favorite going into this season. The Spurs and the Jazz are obviously big time threats and it won’t be easy getting out of the West if the Sonics aren’t the top seed. As far as the East goes, the Bulls are in the mix since Play isn’t going to move any of those guys. Jah is hilariously always in the mix. There are an array of teams in the East who have some solid looking units and it will make for a very interesting season to see who can crack the top 8 since the East looks so strong. I’d say the Bulls are the best team in the East, and they would give Mark’s team some troubles.
6. The draft just took place and the order was: 1) Rose 2) Westbrook 3) Love 4) Ibaka 5) Jordan. Is that how you had the top 5 players ranked? What would be your order?
Don - I think it's going to be a real interesting toss up. I like Westbrook though and I love the Ibaka and Jordan pick. I would have went Rose, Westbrook, Jordan, Ibaka and Love. Not a huge fan of Kevin Love tbh. Not sure about him. I think Westbrook is going to be a stud in this league as well as Rose. Lakers might end up with the best pick in the top 5. Jordan could have been a huge get!
Habes: Nah. Westbrook-Jordan-Rose-Love-Ibaka. Westbrook is going to average 30 pts and 10 rebs at PG. He’ll start out doing 4.5 turnovers, but with potential and camps, he’ll get down to 3.5 and be a top ten player. No idea why Rose is viewed as a star. He needs to take a major outside shooting leap to have Westbrook’s value imo. DeAndre is the last of his kind—looks like Ben Wallace to me. Love is hard to assess, but I think he has a much higher ceiling than Ibaka. Most interesting top five yet.
Ahsan: My ranking - 1) Rose, 2) Westbrook, 3) Jordan, 4) Ibaka, 5) Love. I feel like Love will be great BUT the lack of defense being forced to start as a big is just very difficult to build with. Jordan/Ibaka are far more traditional and Ibaka will be better offensively but Jordan looks superior defensively/rebounding which is why I had him as my top big. I'll likely end up being wrong BUT Jordan WILL be a stud big in this league regardless of whether or not he should be ahead of Love/Ibaka.
Steve: 1. D Rose: Safer than Russ and I think an easier player to win in FBB with. Russ obviously could be the best player in the class if he limits the turnovers to a reasonable amount.
2. R Westbrook: Easy pick if you go Rose first. +8 those handles right away and pray.
3. K Love: Loved LOVE. He’s going to be pretty dang good and I was going to be happy landing a top 3 pick regardless.
4. Ibaka: Trusting Spence made Ibaka a blocking type big and if he did do that...then Ibaka is going to be really awesome I feel like. Will do a lotta things well with no real weaknesses.
5. Gallo: Deandre Jordan is going to be an insane rebounder who is nasty on defense BUT his free throw shooting is going to be...no doubt...detrimental if there’s any sort of volume. I loved Gallo’s notes and I think he’s going to be so damn good.
7. Of the top 5 players listed above, who do you think will be the best player from the draft and who do you think is most likely to BUST? Do you think there is someone picked outside the top 5 who will be the best player from the draft? If so, who…?
Don - I think Russ Westbook is going to be the best player from the top 5 above. I think Kevin Love is going to bust out of that group. Nikola Peković is going to be ELITE. Haven't you heard???
Habes: Westbrook’s the best. I doubt it’s close but who knows. I wouldn’t say anyone busts, but I don’t buy that Ibaka has high potential. I’m not sure he’s more than a third big. I don’t think anyone outside the top 5 will be the best, but I will say that I think Brook has the best skillset of anyone in the draft, rebounding aside. I don’t think he’s a steal because his rebounding is horrendous, but if it jumps, I think he’ll be close to Bosh.
Ahsan: Most likely to bust has to be Westbrook right? Dude will be 4-5 turnovers per game and pretty much unplayable at PG making him a bench player.. And is taking a backup 2nd overall a good thing? Might win 6th Man of the Year but you don't take a guy 2nd overall to chase that award. Outside of the top 5, Mayo looks incredible with 85+ inside so has to be him.
Steve: I don’t think one guy is going to be a bust, BUT if you have to play Russ as the supersub because his turnovers are absurdly bad at PG, then to me that’s disappointing as the #2 overall pick. I think and hope and I am being biased, BUT D Rose will turn out to be the best player. He should be nasty given his potential is really high. Best player that was picked outside the top 5 will be Gallo...like I said above, I loved his notes and I think I would’ve picked him at 5 if I was sitting there.
8. There are 100 people tanking for Steph this year and Spence has started a thread… do you think will be keeping a closer eye on DCs and be more restrict? Do you think he should? Also, with so many teams tanking how many wins do you think the 8th seed will have next year LOL
Don - haha I am FUCKED! I don't think he will change anything from years past. If you have a bad team you will suck. I think he will do what he always does and that's pretty much it. Not a bad thing, I just don't think there is a reason to go overboard unless it is really blatant. Probably like 38 wins gets you in the playoffs if that many teams are tanking!
Habes: Nah, just address glaring stuff and in general accept that people are going to do everything within reason to lose games. Spence’s framework is good: you can’t cut good players and you have to play them. Tactics matter, but I think having a heavy hand in monitoring them just invites complaints.
Ahsan:The bottom of the West looks hilarious bad which makes this being my CY year awesome. Feel like if I can't survive this conference with Duncan, I deserve to be gone. Feel like Spencer made this thread just so he knows. Obviously only one team can get that 35+ PPG 1 TOPG Steph Curry we are all expecting and feels like half the league is trying so a couple of them will fall into the playoffs.
Steve: I would just trust Spence to do that every year, but he might be more keen with it this particular season. I personally think that if he sees something he doesn’t like in terms of a DC...then he should just call that GM out and let him know. Which I believe he does anyway so I don’t worry about it. Well, the East is competing pretty heavily...but the West in particular isn’t. The West you may see that 7-9 range be in the low 40s or even high 30s with wins. Seems like the majority of teams that are tanking are in the West. Will make for a very interesting and dynamic season of tanking.
9. Bonus question! Do you think I should take golf lessons…. I took one lesson and all the sudden I sucked BIG TIME! Maybe I should just teach myself? Then again lessons are cheaper out west so many I should take advantage of that….?
Don - lol, CLASSIC! Yeah take all the lessons you can get. Might as well keep them coming. But then again if you teach yourself, you save money and use that money for playing 18 holes? There may be something there? Either way you're going to suck, so maybe just suck on the golf course??? Am I right? Lots of questions being thrown around and I don't care to proofread!
Habes: I get a lot of questions about golf, and “should I take lessons?” is one of the most common of them. Absolutely not—there is no reason to get lessons. You go out there and just keep doing the same awful shit over and over again—that’s the beauty of the sport. Lessons are just an opportunity for an old man to grab your hips and ask you if it moved. It did, buddy, but it’s just because I’m nervous!
Ahsan: I suck at it, I too should learn but hell yes. Rich people play golf and we all trying to be rich so we got to.
Steve: Stamos, my man, you do what you wanna do! But if you took golf lessons and it made you worse...then did you even take golf lessons? LOL. This is what I say...if you’re enjoying yourself on the links...then who cares if you suck or not! Lmaooo...but if you go out West, then why not? Did I help you? Or did I just make it more confusing? LET ME KNOW, NANZ!
-Def made it more confusing, the jabroni put too many thoughts in my heads!
