Hello all. I'm here with some dudes to talk about what has happened during this offseason and what can potentially happen going forward.
1. We know Kawhi, Jimmy, Klay and Kyrie were the big 4 of this draft and each could've went 1st in a different draft. Which is the most likely to not live up to high expectations?
1. We know Kawhi, Jimmy, Klay and Kyrie were the big 4 of this draft and each could've went 1st in a different draft. Which is the most likely to not live up to high expectations?
the original michael - I want to say Klay Thompson. I really do. But it's hard to ignore the Warrior factor here. I've said it before, but the D rebounding is trash. I don't see Kawhi or Butler busting. Both should be superstars. Kyrie could also "bust". He needs camps and I'm not sure he'll get them as soon as possible.
footy - Kyrie is most likely to be the most disappointing of the four
Kawhi, Jimmy & Klay are sure fire franchise changers. Kyrie is not.
Suspectible defense and likely to be a turnover whore I can see Kyrie having a very similar BBS career to Steve Francis. Ultimately a very good point guard but not one you can rely upon to carry your franchise. Eli is going to need to put in work to maks it to CY
autumn harold - Kyrie. I think a lot of people will say Klay, but I don't see a chance of that happening. I think it's reasonably likely that Kyrie will never be a top 10 PG. With below average rebounding and ordinary scoring skills, he'll never join the Curry/LeBron/Paul top tier, and I don't see a compelling reason to prefer him to guys like Wade, Harden, Lowry, or Livingston. I see his best outcome as the best version--a la Jamal Crawford or Devin Harris--of the conventional point guard here, a player who can score and shoot and handle well but is marginal or negative value on defense and the glass. Give me Rondo over those guys. I still think this type of player is extremely valuable, but I'm not expecting a franchise player.
nybombers3 - Hate saying it because I would love to add him but Kyrie. I don't think he'll end up being a top PG in the league and with so many options out there at PG, he would have to be something special to differentiate himself. He isn't a great defender or rebounder. He's just another high scoring guy who may or may not have good handles. I guess something similar can be said about Klay but at least he should be a good defnder (not STOCKS wise but positional).
2. It seems like most of the bigs in this draft will be moved to SF. What are your thoughts on this? Is this just a reflection of how the NBA is now?
matches well to the NBA but not to FBB.
the original michael - Ye. It's position-less basketball now and we are entering the time period where most bigs are stretch 4/5s. I'm fine with it. A few of those guys will pan out big time, like Mirotic, Vucevic.
footy - You can't teach height and shooting is basketball's most important skill. A big guy who can shoot is every GM's fantasy and its reflective in this draft class.
Not all such draftees will pan out but I think Nikola Mirotic & Davis Bertans could be very valuable pieces on winning teams
autumn harold - I don't think it will last; we're just cycling out of the last crop of conventional bigs. This class added virtually no frontcourt rebounding to the league; that's going to be the case with most future classes. At some point there will be a dearth of legit bigs, we'll see the SF types become playable in the frontcourt, and there won't be better options than them to play up front. But I have no complaints about bigs at SF, and it's had little to no effect on the league. Don't need everyone to build the same way or run the same DC.
nybombers3 - It's difficult because that's how the NBA is now. The tranition from real life to FBB makes it so dudes that are big and can shoot will likely be solid enough at SF. Obviously there's more to it then that but I can see 3/4th of the bigs coming out will be tried out at SF at some point.
3. Kemba went 5th instead of 4th like many thought. Should he have gone 4th or maybe even dropped more?
(EDIT: Yes. I am an idiot and meant he went 6th. I was rushing. Sue me)
(EDIT: Yes. I am an idiot and meant he went 6th. I was rushing. Sue me)
the original michael - The correct pick was made by kobe. Tobias Harris should be B B scoring with C+ boards entering TC after a few camps. I'm a big fan of both guys. Kemba is my favorite player ever and I'm sure he'd be good, but I like Harris' all around game.
footy - Kemba fell to 6th mate! He should have been taken 5th by kobe but Kobe had doubts over his volume. He is not as nice prospect as Kyrie but he should not have been taken after Tobias Harris. Great result for Braz
autumn harold - Think you mean sixth instead of fifth, right? Kemba has good rebounding and high upside. I would have taken him fifth, but I understand the case for Tobias. I'll just say that, like with Kemba, there are a lot of wings with Tobias' skillset in the league too, and unless he's +2 stocks or a top option scorer, I don't think scarcity is a reason to take him over Kemba. Vucevic over Kemba would've made more sense.
nybombers3 - I would've taken Kemba at 5 but I get why he didn't. Could work out if he signs Parker in FA and decides to win again or whatever. Harris looks like a solid guy. I don't think he has great potential but he should be a decent enough guy that it won't hurt kobe that much if Kemba looks good.
4. Any 2nd rounders you love and think will be good?
the original michael - There are always a few sleepers there in the 2nd round. I actually like IT as a bench piece. He could be a nice backup G with higher volume. Solid pickup there in the 2nd round.
footy - Love the selection of Isiah Thomas in the second round. Have a funny feeling there is a bit of potential under that hood and thought he should have been taken in the 1st round
Also liked the gamble on Jan Vesely. His real life counterpart didnt work out but he had a hot missus and maybe that translates in Spenny's rating
autumn harold - Spence said Greg Smith looked good under the hood, so him. Also, I think IT fell to the second, right? I expect him to have hidden potential and very good scoring, but handles and rebounding kill him for me.
nybombers3 - IT in the 2nd round is pretty solid. I liked that Madbum or whatever his name is pick. Wanted him. The one guy I wanted to land at some point was Smith so I'm happy to see what he's about. Hopefully whatever is under the sheets is nice. Sounds weird. Eh.
5. What were your favorite and least favorite picks in the entire draft?
the original michael - Already touched on Harris as a favorite. I also like Vucevic. Not really a fan of Bismack and Tristian. Both players look meh and in the mold of Ed Davis, who was a late 1st last season.
footy - Hated the pick of Harris at 5 as discuss above but really really really loved the pick of Derrick Williams at 17. Arguably should have been a lotto pick- Williams has talent but can he develop?
autumn harold -Favorite picks, apart from the obvious ones: E'Twaun Moore and Nikola Vucevic. Moore becomes a C+/A- scorer with "amazing handles." Moore looks like another George Hill or Patty Mills to me--a case where people overlook starting ratings in favor of potential. Are we sure potential is doing that much for secondary prospects in a league where everyone gets +24'd? Vucevic could get to A rebounding with good scoring. I think he could be superstar.
nybombers3 - I thought the Moore pick was pretty solid. I don't think he'll be a star but should be pretty damn solid. Leuer at 24 was nice as well. I wanted him and was a bit surprised to see him fall that far. Morris at 23 was another dude I was a bit surprised to see that far. He had some decent notes. I hated the TT pick. He could be a solid player but I wouldn't have wanted to take a dude at 13 that Spencer said he didn't like.
6. Who won the draft? Who lost?
the original michael - Obviously the Cavs and Mavs won. The rich get richer. Kawhi is elite. Jimmy is elite. Klay could be elite. Home runs for both of those guys. Loser? Hmm. Tough to say anyone is a loser this early.
footy - Braz won the draft with some terrific picks at value. The Kemba pick was made easy for him, Thomas as well but he also added Reggie Jackson & Donataus Monteejunas for cheap late. If even 50% of those 4 picks develop as expected he could have some nice assets in his super long cy window!
The only loser of the draft was Kobe I think. Drafted Harris too high and also reached for Shumpert when there was a few bettee options on the board. No doubt they will be camped hard and early and may look nice after TC but think he could have got himself better value
autumn harold - The draft is going pay off the most for Svedda. For as much as people talk about inflation, there's still a tier of four or five players who are miles ahead of other foundational pieces. Kawhi will join that tier. Second, me, because Butler could join that tier if there's real potential there, and because Klay should be a top option scorer. I loved Royal's draft too. Who lost: Eli, because he didn't get a difference maker for his CY and burned a pick on TT. Didn't love Kobe's picks at 15 and 16 either. I like Shumpert a lot, but I think 15 is high for him. Like Kanter too, but there are a lot of Kanters around.
nybombers3 - I think royal did pretty well with what he had. I liked Faried and Moore is pretty solid. Raptors getting a lot of solid guys and took some homerun shots with Dontas and even Reggie. Wasn't in love with either of the Warriors picks. A bit indifferent with the Heat's picks. Shump and Kanter aren't bad but I feel like they could've maybe done better.
7. Give me a prediction on the big prizes (Marc Gasol, KD, Gortat)
the original michael - Don't think Bogut is a FA, unless I'm missing something. I do think Gasol and KD re-sign with their teams, but I hope not. Hopefully one of them come to Indiana!
(EDIT: Originally I put Bogut instead of Gortat. My bad)
footy - Gasol leaves LA due to cap restraints
KD stays for the max
Gortat stays but is overpaid
autumn harold - Each is likely to stay put. In fact, probably more likely than not that all three stay put. If anyone leaves, I'll guess Gortat. I'd rather not get into why since I have cap!
nybombers3 - I think they all resign but do feel like two of the three don't stay after resigning.
8. You also have very good vets like Kobe, AI, Parker out there. Where do you see them going?
the original michael - Whoever missed out on KD, Gasol, Gortat, will get solid consolation prizes with the vets. I could see Parker going to Miami. Iverson/Kobe coming to Indiana maybe!
footy - Kobe stays in Milwaukee on a 1 year deal with Andy hoping he can move him but itll be tough
Iverson returns to GSW for a contract that is too expensive and Manas wont be able to trade him again
Kobe will offer Parkwr the max for 3 seasons to Parker as he has the wolves pick and they are in HC hell
autumn harold - I think Kobe stays put and gets dealt within the week, since it looks like Andy wants to rebuild. AI might not get Day 1 bids; I guess he goes to whichever team with cap strikes out, or for the MLE somewhere. Parker is interesting. HF turned down his offer to re-sign and will probably be in HC trouble if he keeps him. I think Kobe outbids HF and lands my beloved Tony.
nybombers3 - I'm not lsoing Kobe so he'll be maxed. I can see Parker leaving. AI's value is pretty trashed at this point but he is a big name still. I can see him back on a big one or two year deal or leaving for said contract. AI to Orlando. Watch for it.
9. Which team needs a homerun the most this offseason?
the original michael - Myself. I haven't had any luck with FA in this league. I really need some FA luck to put this team over the hump.
footy - Magic. They need talent but they need talent for a couple of seasons so they should be looking at Durant, Noah & Gasol and going hard!
autumn harold - The Magic for sure. I enjoy Eli. I think he's funny. I'm sure he's a good GM, but he's completely disengaged, and he's going to need to steal a stud in FA or deal his youth for more developed players to survive the CY. It's not now or never, but his chances of surviving go way down each wasted offseason.
nybombers3 - The Magic. Not even in FA but overall. They need to start preparing for next season. Not sure what the plan is but I would expect either Irving or Holiday will be gone by season's end.
10. A few stud players have been on the market. Who's the next big domino to fall?
the original michael - Not sure. Maybe Orlando puts Jrue Holiday and Kyrie on the market in an attempt to reset now rather than waiting for next season? I definitely expect the Knicks to deal Pacce and Haslem and tank for the first time.
footy - Rumors of a Roy trade appear to be overblown but with the Knicks rebuilding maybe Pacce is the next name to be moved. Not sure if big enough for you but thats all spies are telling me!
autumn harold - Hmmm. I was going to go after Roy aggressively if either my firsts was outside of the top three. I'm not sure how willing Andy would've been to deal him, but that would've been a more interesting prediction than the crop of vets who get tossed around every offseason. I'll be a massive idiot and say Chris Bosh. Outlawz needs depth and a PG. He's shopping Bosh and Millsap. Maybe I'll have a nice Day 1 in FA and slide into his DMs for abuse.
nybombers3 - Roy aside, I can see Gasol or West being traded right after FA. If Kobe comes back, he'll be gone. I also expect (HOPE) for a Magic trade. Clippers may try to break down the big 3.
