A few of us were fortunate enough to sit down at a virtual bar and shoot the shit about the league, some of its happenings and Braz even got to ask some advice going into his hopefully first winning season. Hope you all enjoy hearing from some of the league's finest.
1. People said this was a dead season or a slow one. What could we do to get your interest to an increased level or improve the league overall?
Von - It was slow season for me just because of the makeup of my team. I was trying to reset while mitigating my risk incase I failed. I didn't really like the market on Brandan Wright to open the season and I had a pretty easy SOS so I jumped out hot out of the gates. I fucked up my initial Haslem trade by not cutting someone and went 0-6 that sim. Dug a huge hole for me that may of screwed me over long run. I was very hesitant on making moves that I felt weren't right; BBS purgatory I guess.
I can't really speak on behalf of other GM's on why things are dead or why they aren't dead. A lot of articles have moved to podcasts which are cool but they are just way too long. I think we need to either collectively cut our podcast down to 30 minutes or insert timestamps on what's being discussed into the initial post.....especially with any type of Draft Notes. I don't really have the time to shell out an hour every time a podcast comes out. Spence offered both notes and a podcast this year so I can't really complain too much
I think a Zoom podcast around Draft Notes should get some new blood in there outside HUE Crew. Maybe Galo and Steve next year or some new guys can partake.
nybombers3 - It did feel like a slow season but as a tanking team, there isn’t a ton to look into. Plus, many good players are pretty much stuck on the same teams. Nothing all that interesting to look at. Plus no CY teams. Just a boring season. Hopefully this offseason brings some heavy movement. As for improving the league, not sure. There are some things I would like but Spencer does a great job as is. Not sure I would want to add more shit to his plate.
JR - I dont think much was down. Every GM was active. Might not have saw the usual number of trades or posts but everybody wa active. Some of the more active traders like Skillz were tanking maybe thats part of it.
greeme - I don't know about everybody else but I have been swamped at work. I don't have a ton of time. And after a few seasons I usually have guys I like more than other gms do so it is hard to get trades done. Even frenzy deals aren't that interesting bc it seems like most of the decent players don't have rcs at all. That said Joe is gone by the flip so get your bids in. Less trading is less activity bc there are less comments on the trades. I think quite a few gms are gun shy about trading bc of some gms going overboard on their comments.
2. We see a lot of trades in this league but it is not often to get a big name player like Lebron, Wade, Paul to be dealt. What does a GM look for in those deals. Do you feel that the side getting multiple pieces for a star normally wins or loses?
Von - It's just tough to get like value for those guys. I traded Zo for 8 picks in the beginning of the league and got slammed. The side getting multiple pieces for a star usually loses because these guys are insanely good.
nybombers3
- I feel like, when you trade the star, your more likely to take the loss in the deal. Of course, the players you get can turn out just as good or even better but once you get a star like a Bron or CP3, I get the desire to hold on to them. It’s hard to get back a player like that. When you deal dudes like this, you want the best package. Picks/players/Cap.
JR
-I have LeBron and personally i wont trade him till i get a deal i clearly win. 2 Studs for him would have to be it. Doubt it happens so probably the only way he leaves Utah is via FA.
greeme - You can't get fair value. You have to accept that you aren't going to get fair value and move the player at some point. It is very hard to tank with a pg like cp3 so if you don't have enough around him to compete and you want to tank you have to take the L. In general the only way to "win" such a trade is to get lucky and trade for picks which end up jumping.
3. In the current format we are moving into the offseason. this could be posted mid draft and questions asked during conf finals. What is your favorite part about our offseaason? What would you change (could be timing, pre seasons, TC etc).
Von
I think Preseason can either be a set DC or some type of acknowledgment of what the CPU DC was so it has a little more meaning. The latter is a little more time consuming so I would think the former would be the better option. I think a lot of guys go in blind into Opening Sim, but that's kind of cool in its own right I guess.
I think there needs a more organized system to forfeiting 2nds and other GM's picking them up. Seems to always be an issue around who has what pick in the 2nd round when it comes to processing.
nybombers3
- I like the draft mostly. Always interesting to see what guys are looking for when they draft someone, what things they look for in the ratings and if they look more for ready made or potential. Also always interesting to see why certain guys go where they go. I think the timing overall is fine. Sometimes we run into slow downs with the draft but we can’t control when dudes ghost or just general fuckery. As far as what we can change, not sure. I would love DC preseason but that’s more work for Spencer and it can provide interesting stats that we wouldn’t be able to get with our own DC’s.
JR
- I love how fast the draft goes here. In other leagues it stalls once or twice a stall for us in an hour or so. LOVE that shout out to the draft mods for this. Play, Galo, and Skillz. Good job fellas.
greeme - Fa is my favorite part of the offseason, especially when I have cap. Tc is usually the worst bc I generally have bad ones. Meh. I would like to be able to set dcs for pre. I don't learn a ton out of comp set dcs and they don't play rooks I would like to play. I also like to play around with dcs and an extra sim is always good.
4. A lot can change between now and next year but who at this moment is your pick for the next season's title and why?
Von
- Sonics until proven otherwise. Harden should get better for the Pacers. Dallas is a big away but Kaman's progression violently see-saw's year to year.
nybombers3
- I’m guessing the Blazers/Cavs meet in the finals. Curry is a cheat mode and don has done a solid job putting together talent around him. Cavs have Al Jeff, the Klaw and 3 lotto picks plus some solid role guys. I can see them putting together a winning group. That and the East is pretty whatever, especially if Indy does tear it down.
JR
- Sonics and Pacers are the 2 favorites in my eyes. Most complete teams. Hard to argue anybody else right now. Maybe Mavs.
greeme - Cavs should have the best team whenever they decide to. Al jeff is one of the best players in the league. Kawhi will be there after tc. Williams is a solid starter and ayers a solid 3rd bid. They need a pg and there are about 50 good ones in the league so that shouldn't be hard. They have to sign or trade for a solid starting big. If they jump this year we should all give up.
5. With the NBA draft last night how did your team fare. If you did not have a specific team or cause what were your thoughts overall? Who will be best player?
Von -
I wanted the Knicks to take Deni, I think I have grown on Obi over the last 24 hours. We will see. Hated the Quickley pick with Hampton on the board who I felt was worthy of a late lotto. Otaru looks like he can be a beast. Good selection in the 2nd round. Best player will be Wiseman.
nybombers3
- Knicks weren’t a train wreck so I’m good. I haven’t seen the Knicks make positive moves like that in a while so there’s that. Not sure about not drafting a PG and that scares me because that means either Westbrick and FVW will be coming. Either way, hopefully the Knicks take it slow but we’ll see. Obi should be a solid big. No D but that’s ok. Nobody plays D anyways. Not sure about Quick but I won’t shit on him. Just wish we drafted a PG higher. We’ll see though.
JR -
I am not like most Knick fans, I have been an Obi fan since the Maui Invitational. Dude was crazy good then and led his team to a 29-2 record. His team blew out Georgia, where the #1 pick went. Also grabbed a shooter in Quickly as well. I like what the Knicks did in the draft for sure. One thing people are knocking them for is picking players they have ties with. If you knew a guy worked hard and is a good teammate wouldnt you want to take them as well? Just my take on all that.
greeme - Nets took somebody and then traded him for a guy I don't like. Then they drafted a scrubb and traded him for a scrub. Meh in general. Will Harden come to Brooklyn?? That is all that matters.
I was more interested to see where the 2 Israelis landed, Deni dropped a few spots which made the national news but Yam went higher than thought. Maybe kobe is drafting for the Celtics.
6. Another draft question- I have never seen any of these guys sim personally. Which players from the 2020 NBA draft will be stars here? Give me one or two names!
Von
Wiseman will be solid especially on the W's. BBS is going to hate Ball and Edwards game. I think you will find some value out of Okoro and Williams but I don't believe they will be stars. Halliburton could be really good as well as Deni.
nybombers3
- Stars here in FBB? If that’s what you mean then eh. Obi should be Blake like. I can see Anthony being a FBB great player. It’s hard. Dude reminds me of Wiggins when it comes to caring but eh. How do you show that in FBB? I guess make them low volume. Edwards is talented as hell though. A dude like Bane should be a good role guy in FBB. Deni might be a pretty good player. Not sure, through FBB, which PG would be great, including Ball.
JR
- I say you should see the value of your youth after the draft and see what you can get for these guys. Dont take the first deal but get a few deals in the works to see what these guys are worth around the league. Dont hold onto guys because you drafted them.
greeme - Yam will be a stud pg in bbs. Stls, low tos, shoots 3s. bbs loves guys like that. Deni has a ton of intangibles which don't translate well. Unless Spence gives him the Draymond treatment Deni will be a tweener and never find his place.
7. Advice to the Raptors GM 3 seasons in? The team looks like it has some solid youth but CY is looming. How should he navigate?
Von
You got to pay for this type of info! You're going to need to overpay to get someone good, but don't overpay on guys with TO problems or bigs who can't board or block. Always try to overpay on guys that have a redeeming quality that other GM's respect.
nybombers3
- Try to win but keep the pick, Whiteside and Kemba unless you get an offer you can’t say no too. You have another season, just chill and see what’s out there. I would definitely start making, at least, smaller moves to get talent and put together a winning team. No reason to go into the CY season with no talent at all if you don’t have to. Older vets shouldn't cost a lot so fuck it. See what's there.
JR

greeme 1 - Never wait until the last year. One bad injury or a bad tc or a guy leaving in fa can make the difference. Murphy is king in cy.
2 - Always try to make trades in your conference which make 1 or 2 teams tank. The less teams trying to make the playoffs the better.
Thanks guys for the time! Glad to know I am not the only sad knicks fan here. Maybe there is some optimism in the distant future. Thank you all on the advice how to navigate. Lets go Raptors!
