BBS DRAFT REVIEW - ROUND 1
1. Phoenix Suns- PAU GASOL
The Suns made a bold bold move taking Pau Gasol first overall. I respect the pick as the Suns think Pau Gasol will be a better compliment to Baron Davis. I personally would have gone with Arenas, but you can't go wrong with Pau Gasol. Gasol should easily be a 20/10/2 big in a few years for the Phoenix Suns and could form a nice tandem with Baron Davis.
GRADE: B
2. Los Angeles Lakers- GILBERT ARENAS
Let's call Arenas the BBS "logo" as Spencer has this man as his avatar. I love Arenas and I love this pick. Clearly, Arenas is going to be a hell of a player in this league has he already has the highest inside and outside scoring in the draft. The main question will be, can he overcome the turnover and defensive inefficiencies? Camp his handles and scoring before TC and BOOM, you should have yourself a superstar. He should have gone #1.
GRADE: A+
3. Orlando Magic- JOE JOHNSON
Back to back A+ grades. Joe Johnson was the clear #3 player in this draft in my opinion. ISO Joe is a great scorer and teh Magic should move him from SF to SG. The Magic now have a building block to add to Antoine Walker. GREAT pick by break.
GRADE: A+
4. Portland Trail Blazers - GERALD WALLACE
This pick could have gone numerous ways. I like the Wallace pick, but I probably would have taken Parker here. With that being said, I think Gerald Wallace becomes a very nice wing in this league. He might be able to block shots from the wing position, which is a HUGE plus. No, he's not a fucking PF.
GRADE: B
5. Seattle Super Sonics- TYSON CHANDLER
Hear me out, I'm a huge Tyson fan and was even trying to trade up here to take him. Was he worth being picked over Tony Parker? Absolutely not. If Tyson had a higher rebounding and defensive rating, then yes, but that C+ rebounding scares me. I think Tyson will be a great player in this league though.
Grade: C+
6. Dallas Mavericks - TONY PARKER
This move was THE move. Parker falling to 6 was a great get for the Dallas Mavericks. He'll fit in nicely with JO and Keynon Martin and crew down there in Dallas. Parker's outside is super close to C+, so with one RC, he'll get there before TC, which is huge.
GRADE: A+
7. San Antonio Spurs- ZACH RANDOLPH
Interesting pick, but the right pick. ZBo is the best player available. The question is, does he play SF or PF. I think the Spurs keep him at PF for TC to boost his rebounds, but his future position could be SF due to his inability to block the shot.
GRADE: A
8. Atlanta Hawks - SAMUEL DALEMBERT
Sammy D is a good defensive/rebounding big similar to Tyson Chandler. However, the Hawks got their guy at 8, not 5. His defensive and rebounding are actually higher than Tyson interestingly enough. Great pick at this spot.
GRADE: A+
9. Milwaukee Bucks - DESAGNA DIOP
Not really a fan, but this is where the draft takes a dive a bit. I would have gone with Curry or one of the wings, but Diop could make me eat crow and be a shot blocking monster for the Bucks.
GRADE: C+
10. Portland Trail Blazers (from Wizards) - EDDY CURRY
Eddy Curry is a fat fucking enigma. With that said, he's an interesting prospect right now. He probably has elite strength and high inside scoring with minimal to no jumping. If Curry can develop a decent shot blocking ability and the ability to rebound, he'll be a steal here for the Blazers.
GRADE: A-
11. Toronto Raptors - JASON RICHARDSON
MY MAN GAME! Good pick. JRich is all jumping probably, but his jumper looks decent and on name value alone (which does mean something to some GMs) makes him a steal here at #11. Oh, and he's a former Warrior. Apparently that is a thing here.
GRADE: A
12. Boston Celtics - SHANE BATTIER
The Celtics have Allen Iverson and a watered down Mike Bibby. They need help. Battier can shoot and defend, but does not do much else. He's a classic 3 & D guy, and I think it's a bit early here for him. He'll be a good player, but I would have preferred to see them take a higher risk/reward guy. Nothing personal man!
GRADE: C
13. Washington Wizards (from Sixers via Trail Blazers)- RICHARD JEFFERSON
Richard Jefferson joins a huge group of wings in Washington, including Peja, Mason, Wally, and Redd. A little surprised they did not take a big like Okur or Griffin, but RJ is good value here. He should develop into being a good scoring wing, but the Wizards may have to consolidate their wings.
GRADE: B
14. Sacramento Kings - MEHMET OKUR
I despise C rated big men. Usually. Okur is an interesting piece and I suppose the grade really depends on how they use him. They clearly want to push the tempo and shoot lots of jumpers with Crawford and Kobe, so Okur kind of fits that bold as a big. If he can develop a decent blocking ability and rebounding ability, he'll be a steal. He may also have the quickness to play SF.
GRADE: B+
15. Houston Rockets - KWAME BROWN
His inside is a low C+, but his defense and rebounding is closer to B-, which is NICE. The former #1 overall pick in the real draft falls all the way to Ahsan and the Rockets and can be a steal! I trust Ahsan to give Kwame the loving he needs to become a nice big man.
GRADE: B
16. Golden State Warriors- TROY MURPHY
I like this pick. He's not a big man though. The Warriors need to slide this man to SF and let him chill. He'll have that B rebounding, which gives him a huge advantage over other wings. That inside scoring needs work though. At this point in the draft, great value.
GRADE: A-
17. Milwaukee Bucks (from Pacers via Timberwolves) - JAMAAL TINSLEY
The Bucks traded their 2nd round pick in the creation draft, Rashard Lewis for these next two picks and Kenny Thomas. Thomas looks like an interesting wing, however, his contract expires and he has no bird years. With the first of their picks, they select the best available PG in the draft. Jamal Tinsley will never be a scorer, but should be a decent PG in this league with semi low TOs.
GRADE: C+
18. Milwaukee Bucks (from Pacers via Pistons) - BOBBY SIMMONS
Simmons was a good pick at this point in the draft. He and the next pick were the two best wings left in this draft. Simmons should be a decent role player in this league and with a little luck, maybe more.
GRADE: A-
19. Dallas Mavericks (from Heat) - Vladimir Radmanovic
Great pick. The Dallas Mavericks hit a home run in this draft. Vlad Rad and Tony Parker are great value picks. Had I kept the 17th pick, I would have selected Vlad Rad. He obviously needs to be moved to SF, but is going to be an interesting prospect and could be a nice piece for habes and the Mavs.
GRADE A
20. Orlando Magic (from Nuggets) - EDDIE GRIFFIN
Another great pick. I likely would have taken him with #18. Griffin does a little of everything and looks like a well rounded prospect who could be an absolute sleeper for the Magic. The Magic also had a really good draft.
GRADE: A
21. Washington Wizards (from Pacers via Blazers) - BRENDAN HAYWOOD
Haywood is another nice rebounding/blocking big. He can't score AT ALL, but he looks like he can be a serviceable big man for the Wiz. They needed a guy to grab rebounds from all their wings, and that is what they got in Haywood. Another guy I considered at #17 and #18, good pick.
GRADE: B+
22. Orlando Magic (from Cavaliers) - STEVEN HUNTER
Looks like the draft falls off here. Hunter can't rebound, but I bet he can block the shot at a decent rate. He'll need a nice TC to become a legit rotational piece for the Magic. With one juicy TC, Hunter could be looking similar to lottery picks Tyson Chandler and Samuel Dalembert.
GRADE: C+
23. Portland Trail Blazers (from Grizzlies) -EARL WATSON
Did I say the draft has fallen off? Oof. Watson can't score, and looks like a lesser Jamal Tinsley. He'll be a decent backup point guard for the Blazers. Not much else left at this point. What really else is there to say?
GRADE: C+
24. Portland Trail Blazers (from Clippers - ANDRES NOCIONI
I like this pick. The Argentinian can score and defends decently, so should be a nice role player for the Blazers, with the slight chance to turn into something more. Good pick for the Portland Trailblazers at this point of the draft.
GRADE: A-
25. Sacramento Kings (from Hornets) - KENDRICK BROWN
Kendrick Brown is a great pick at this point in the draft. He can get to the rim and score in the paint, but lacks a jump shot. However, he can rebound better than most SFs, giving him a big advantage over most SFs. Obviously, the Kings did not draft Brown to be a star, but he'll be a great bench player behind Kobe and crew.
Grade: A-
26. Phoenix Suns (from Nets) - MAURICE EVANS
Who? no fucking idea who this guy is. But, he looks the part. Good shooter and good rebounder, looks the part of the prototypical 3 & D wing. What more could you ask for with the 26th pick? Should be a nice rotational piece for the Suns. With some luck, maybe he turns out to be a decent starter.
GRADE: A-
27. Chicago Bulls - OMAR COOK
The Bulls and Jazz are two of the contending only teams that did not deal their picks during the season. The Bulls select one of the last remaining teenagers in the draft in Omar Cook. The former St. Johns baller joins a pretty good Bulls team and should benefit as he could see his share of the teams RCs and ACs. He is a straight C+ PG and looks like he can be a decent player.
GRADE: A+
28. Phoenix Suns (from Knicks) - LOREN WOODS
It's getting tough to give bad grades because of the drop off in talent here. But with the second of their late first rounders, the Suns take the former Arizona Wildcat. Woods was a hell of a college player and could be a decent prospect for the Suns. With a bare roster, he should get a ton of burn and could be a decent player.
GRADE: A-
29. Utah Jazz - OUSMANE CISSE
The Champs pick is in! The defending champions select the 19 year old big who can't defense or rebound. He's raw as fuck. This pick amount to nothing at all, but the Jazz have an older roster so they could allocate all of their future ACs and RCs to make Cisse something decent.
GRADE: A+ (Only because they are champs)
