The 10 worst contracts in the league
Going through the different teams I was surprised at how few bad contracts there are. For the most part the worst contracts are long term contracts for aging stars which are just going to get uglier and uglier unless the players decide to retire.
Honorable mention – I don't have any young players on my actual list so I thought I would put the 2 worst contracts for young guys here. Unlike the older players, the younger ones can have a good tc or 2 and make their contracts look better.
John Wall –
Year 1: $13,500,000
Year 2: $15,000,000
Year 3: $16,500,000
Year 4: $18,000,000
Year 5: $19,500,000
Year 6: $21,000,000
He can still improve obviously but there are so many pgs around why max a slightly above average pg?
Serge Ibaka -
Year 1: $16,500,000
Year 2: $18,000,000
Year 3: $19,500,000
Year 4: $21,000,000
Solid starter but really not more than that and he gets a ton for what he does.
and now on to the list
10. Boris Diaw –
Year 1: $9,610,500
Year 2: $10,349,769
Boris is the only 2 year contract on this list but he gives you next to nothing for 10 mil a year. I mean maybe he can get a few minutes as a backup wing but meh you can get the same production from an lle.
9. Josh Smith -
Year 1: $19,500,000
Year 2: $21,450,000
Year 3: $23,400,000
Year 4: $25,350,000
Year 5: $27,300,000
Year 6: $29,250,000
Still a top performer but he is signed until 35. He will be a top player for the next 2-3 years but then that contract will be immovable.
8. Marc Gasol -
Year 1: $18,000,000
Year 2: $19,500,000
Year 3: $21,000,000
Great ratings. Not too old. So why is he on this list? I hate Marty. Seriously though, he doesn't play up to his ratings and 18 mil is about twice as much as he should be paid.
7. David Lee -
Year 1: $15,600,000
Year 2: $16,800,000
Year 3: $18,000,000
He is 32 and on a big 3 year deal. He is probably a backup at this point in his career and that is way too much to pay for a backup.
6.Dwayne Wade -
Year 1: $18,900,000
Year 2: $21,262,500
Year 3: $23,920,312
Year 4: $26,910,351
Year 5: $29,400,000
Year 6: $31,500,000
Still elite but he is 33 and that contract runs until he is 38. Whoever has him in a couple of years will be looking forward to seeing his name on the retirings list.
5. Amar'e Stoudemire -
Year 1: $24,062,695
Year 2: $27,070,532
Year 3: $29,575,000
Year 4: $31,687,500
Still putting up all star numbers but I hate paying bigs so much to shoot inefficiently and that contract runs until 36.
4. David West -
Year 1: $24,806,250
Year 2: $27,562,500
Year 3: $30,318,750
Am I being too hard on David West? Still an elite big and he only has 3 years left. On the other hand he is 35 years old. On the other other hand his ratings are still top notch. Hmmmmm. He might be too high on this list.
3. Carmelo Anthony -
Year 1: $23,625,000
Year 2: $25,987,500
Year 3: $28,350,000
Year 4: $30,712,500
Year 5: $33,075,000
He is a better stealing Mirza with slightly more volume. If it was hard to move a 6 mil mirza for cap how hard is it going to be to move somebody who will make 30 mil at 34 years of age? Not easy
2. Zach Randolph -
Year 1: $20,009,069
Year 2: $21,209,613
Year 3: $22,482,190
Year 4: $23,831,121
Still great at what he does. Scores very efficiently for a big and rebounds with the best of them. He is signed until 37 though and can't block.
1. Pau Gasol -
Year 1: $17,708,330
Year 2: $19,346,640
Year 3: $20,728,543
Our second Gasol on the list. At 35 I doubt he would get an mle offer and somehow he is getting paid 4 times that and still has 2 more years left after this one. Unless most players on this list he shouldn't be starting this year. Old, overpaid and mediocre. He has it all and well deserves the top spot on this list.
